Learn Kiteboarding in the Dominican Republic
Ever dreamed of learning kiteboarding in the heart of the Caribbean? The Dominican Republic is the perfect place to start, offering consistent trade winds, warm waters, and excellent waves for surfing.
This trip is based in Cabarete, a lively coastal town near Puerto Plata. Once a quiet fishing village, Cabarete has grown into an amazing destination for watersports. With its tropical climate, beautiful beaches, and ideal conditions, it is a great place for adventure seekers from all over the world.
This day is dedicated to a safe arrival and familiarization with the Dominican Republic and Cabarete.
Arrival at the airport and familiarization with the Dominican. Now, it's time to get out of the city and go to Cabarete!

Your Daily Adventure
This experience is designed for travelers who want to try something exciting and potentially life-changing. Mornings begin with surf sessions, while the afternoons are dedicated to kiteboarding lessons. Whether you're starting from zero or already have some experience, everything is adapted to your skill level and personal goals.
Not Into Watersports?
If you're traveling with someone who isn't as interested in watersports, there's still plenty to enjoy. Cabarete offers yoga and wellness retreats, fitness classes, mountain hikes, off-road motorbiking, and a wide range of beachside cafés and restaurants. Everyone can have a great time here.
Flexible Schedule Based on Weather
The suggested itinerary is based on typical wind and wave conditions, but we adapt to the weather. Your schedule may shift slightly depending on what nature brings during your stay. Everything is flexible and customizable to ensure you get the most out of your trip. The main idea is for kiteboarding to be the main activity with surfing as a bonus, but of course, everything is optional and flexible depending on your preferences. Although the wind is quite consistent all year round, it's typically the most reliable from June - August and from December - April.
Getting Around
To reach Cabarete, I strongly recommend using a reliable taxi service. A one-way taxi ride typically costs around $50 US dollars (from Puerto Plata Airport), and it's the safest and most comfortable way to arrive.
Once you’re in Cabarete, I recommend renting a scooter to get around. If you'd rather travel by taxi, that's up to you.
Of course, these are all just suggestions; you’re free to travel however you prefer. Your trip should feel as relaxed or adventurous as you want it to be.
Book Your Watersports Experience
To book your kiteboarding or surfing lessons, I suggest we get in contact first to discuss your ideas and plans.

Welcome to Cabarete! For the first day, it's important to familiarize yourself and get used to the place. If you would like to travel around on scooter. You can rent it in the Cabarete. Here are some scooter rentals. If you prefere to travel with a taxi. It is up to you.

After all that traveling it's finally time for some action! Enjoy the surf in the morning and the wind in the afternoon. Warning: you're going to sleep like a baby tonight!
Playa Encuentro is the premier surf spot on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, located just 10 minutes west of Cabarete. Known for its consistent waves, warm waters, and stunning natural surroundings, this beach attracts surfers of all levels, from beginners to experienced wave riders.
Note: if surfing is not entirely for you, you can always enjoy a nice coffee on the beach and relax.

It's now the afternoon and the wind is on! It's time for some more action. The Cabarete beach is a lengthy strip with multiple different spots where you can learn how to kiteboard. As a certified instructor, and depending on my availability I can provide lessons. If you want to go with a school instead, I can provide great recommendations and spots regarding where to learn.
What will happen during the first lesson?
Lesson 1: Introduction to kiteboarding and the basics
Your kitesurfing journey begins with an introduction to the basics. You'll start with a safety briefing and an overview of kite control on the beach. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, you'll learn how to set up your equipment, handle the kite, and master essential flying techniques. By the end of the session, you’ll gain confidence in steering the kite and understanding wind dynamics, laying the foundation for an exciting progression in the days ahead!

This day is just like the day 2, ensuring you can progress with your kiteboarding and surfing.
Just like the day before it's time to surf again in the morning! Hopefully, you don't have spaghetti arms from the previous day ;)

Lesson 2: body dragging and control
Now that you’re comfortable controlling the kite on land, it’s time to take things to the water! In this session, you'll practice body dragging, a crucial skill for maneuvering in the water without the board. You'll learn how to generate power with the kite, control your direction, and retrieve your board if you lose it. This step builds confidence and prepares you for the next big milestone – getting up on the board and riding!

Day 4 is a one-day break from the kiteboarding (this is optional of course). Instead, you can either enjoy a nice day on the beach or go to the famous Wilson's fish restaurant by the rivermouth called "La Boca" – famously known for their fried fish meal.
Another morning of beautiful surfing!

Enjoy an amazing trip to the rivermouth La Boca where you can go to the famous Wilson's restaurant for some local seafood for a late lunch. Authentic Dominican style!
Click here to watch a youtube video reviewing this restaurant!

Another day of action. You've already completed your first two kitesurfing lessons, so let's continue. Great, you're starting to get good at it.
Another day, another wave!

Lesson 3: Waterstart and first rides
Today is the moment you've been waiting for – getting up on the board! Building on your kite control and body dragging skills, you'll learn the water start technique, where you combine kite power with board positioning to get on your feet. You will be guided through proper posture, balance, and timing to help you take your first short rides. Expect plenty of attempts and some wipeouts, but once you feel that first glide, you'll be hooked!
Enjoy a nice dinner at Ally's surfcamp with a cozy, lodgy atmoshphere. My recommendation: the famous Ally's churrasco.

Another day of action.
Morning surf session! Hopefully, your wave count is starting to increase and you are properly riding.

Lesson 4: Riding Independently and Progression
For the fourth lesson, it's time to put everything together and focus on gaining confidence as an independent rider. You'll refine your water starts, improve your balance, and work on controlling your speed and direction. You will practice riding longer distances, adjusting your stance, and even attempting small turns.

Another day of action with yoga instead of surfing in the morning as an alternative option.
1 hour yoga session near Encuentro beach to release all the tension from the previous days.

For today's lesson we will try a different spot called kitebeach – the most popular kitespot in the Dominican Republic. What makes it so special? Besides the consistent wind, kitebeach has a reef a couple of 100 meters from the shore. This ensures that the water is much flatter and less exposed to oceanic swell, making it much easier to improve riding skills.
Lesson 5: Advanced Kite Control & Self-Rescue kite-handling
Building on your solid foundation, Lesson 5 introduces more advanced kite handling techniques and essential self-rescue strategies. You'll learn to navigate shifting winds, fine-tune your kite positioning, and execute quick, safe recoveries if the unexpected occurs. This session is all about boosting your confidence and preparing you for more dynamic riding ahead!
Hungry after a full day of action? Try my favorite pizza place in town – Pizzicleta. The head chef, who also owns the restaurant, is from Italy. Rest assured, the pizza here is spot-on.

Another day of action and let's move on to the sixth lesson.
Morning surf
Lesson 6: Smooth Transitions & Board Mastery
In Lesson 6, it's time to elevate your water skills by perfecting your transitions. You'll refine your water starts and edging techniques to build longer, more controlled rides. You will merge kite power with board handling, ensuring every movement feels fluid and natural as you push toward more independent riding.

Last day of action, today you have your last kitesurfing lesson. You already know everything, all you have to do is enjoy a dynamic ride.
Morning surf
Lesson 7: Dynamic Riding
Now that you've mastered the basics and honed your advanced skills, Lesson 7 is where you truly shine. This session focuses on dynamic turning techniques, sharp maneuvers, and stylish tricks that combine precise kite control with agile board riding. Get ready to unleash your full potential and ride with confidence in any wind or wave condition!

Time to go home. Don´t forget to be at the airport at least 2-3 hours prior to your departure.

As your kiteboarding adventure comes to an end, you'll leave with incredible memories, new skills, and the thrill of mastering one of the most exciting watersports in the world. Whether you managed your first smooth rides or simply enjoyed the process of learning, you've taken a big step into the realm of kiteboarding; you might even notice a boost in your surf skills as well.
Beyond the lessons, this trip has been about immersing yourself in the vibrant energy of Cabarete – its stunning beaches, tropical atmosphere, and laid-back yet adventurous lifestyle. As you reflect on the past few days, you'll likely find yourself already dreaming about your next kitesurfing session, with the added excitement of confidently catching waves.
This isn't just the end of a trip – it’s the beginning of a new passion and a compelling reason to return to the water time and time again!
