Tomorrow, another flight awaits you, this time to Perth in Western Australia, where your real adventure begins, so make sure to recharge your batteries.

You will fly into the city of Perth in Western Australia. On the first day of your road trip, you'll be welcomed by Perth, Australia's most isolated major city, where your whole west coast road trip begins. After a long flight, we recommend just slowing down, picking up your car, and soaking in the atmosphere of Western Australia, which feels much calmer and more relaxed than the better-known eastern part of the country.

This day isn't about big plans or long drives. It's more about a slow start to a road trip that will take you over the coming days to endless beaches, the red Australian landscape, and one of the most freedom-travel-friendly destinations in the world.

One of the most iconic trips in all of Western Australia awaits you - Rottnest Island. After a morning ferry ride from Perth or Fremantle, you'll find yourself on a car-free island where, instead of roads, you'll be met with white beaches, a turquoise ocean, and a laid-back Australian island vibe. During the day, you can cycle around bays with crystal-clear water, stop for a swim, or just slowly explore the island's coastline, which ranks among the most beautiful in all of Western Australia.

Leaving Perth, you’ll head south along the coast to an area famous for its beautiful beaches, vineyards, and laid-back West Coast lifestyle. Get ready for your first real Western Australian road trip day: long roads, the ocean on your left, and endless space all around you. Your first major stop is Bunbury, a chilled-out coastal town known primarily for its dolphins and long beaches. It’s the perfect spot for a quick break, a coffee by the ocean, or your first relaxed stop on the way south. From there, you’ll continue to Busselton, one of the most popular coastal towns in all of Western Australia. We recommend wrapping up your evening by the ocean or at one of the local spots along the coast. Busselton has a completely different atmosphere to Perth—slower, with more of a beach town vibe and that relaxed pace of life typical of the Western Australian coast.

The next day of your road trip takes you to Margaret River. This is a region where the road trip pace really slows down, and the days start to revolve mainly around the ocean, vineyards, and the chilled-out atmosphere of Western Australia. Margaret River is one of the most beautiful parts of the entire coast, perfectly combining surf beaches, dramatic cliffs, and one of the best food & wine scenes in Australia.

We recommend starting your morning with a slow brunch or a visit to one of the local wineries the whole region is famous for. Vineyards surrounded by green landscapes, great Australian wine, and a peaceful atmosphere create a completely different vibe compared to the previous road trip days. During the day, you can visit Ngilgi Cave—a fascinating cave system hidden under the Margaret River coastline. In the afternoon, explore a section of Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, which is one of the most beautiful coastal areas in all of Western Australia. During the day, we recommend visiting the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, taking a walk along the coast, or just stopping at one of the viewpoints where the ocean crashes into the rocks with immense force beneath you. If you are traveling during migration season, the area around Augusta is also one of the best places in Australia for whale watching (in season). With a bit of luck, you can spot them right from the shore, but if you want to boost your odds, book a whale-watching boat tour; most companies guarantee a 99% chance of spotting them. 😄 Just be prepared for potential seasickness. However, seeing huge humpback whales in the open ocean is worth it and is one of those unforgettable experiences.

Albany awaits you - a historic coastal town in the south of Western Australia, where the Australian wilderness shows its wildest side. You'll see dramatic cliffs, massive Southern Ocean waves, and a raw coastline. The journey to Albany leads through long, empty roads, forests, and open landscapes typical of Australia's south. 

A journey along one of the most remote and wildest coastlines in all of Western Australia. The road from Albany towards Bremer Bay leads through a landscape where civilization gradually fades away, replaced by the endless ocean, empty beaches, and a sense of absolute tranquility.

Arrival in Esperance, where you will spend the rest of your road trip. For many travelers, Esperance is the absolute highlight of Western Australia, and it’s easy to see why. The turquoise ocean, Australia’s whitest beaches, and massive granite boulders create scenery that feels more like a tropical island than the remote coast of Australia’s south.

After long days on Australian roads, this is where your road trip will significantly slow down. On the first day, we recommend driving the coastal Scenic Drive around Esperance, stopping at lookouts, and enjoying beaches with incredibly clear water. The biggest highlight of the day is Twilight Beach, which is one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire region, offering perfect conditions for swimming and relaxing by the ocean. End your evening with dinner overlooking the ocean and enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets in all of Western Australia.

Cape Le Grand National Park - one of the most iconic places in all of Australia and an absolute highlight of the Esperance area. The turquoise ocean, the whitest sand in Australia, and huge granite boulders create scenery that feels magical. During the day, we recommend driving through the most beautiful part of the national park and stopping at the various beaches and lookout points along the coast. Definitely don't miss Lucky Bay, where kangaroos often roam the white sand right by the ocean. If you're up for a more active part of the day, you can head out on a hike up Frenchman Peak, which offers stunning panoramic views of the entire Esperance coastline and Cape Le Grand National Park.
