Forget your ideas about polished European capitals. Skopje is a city full of contrasts, wild energy, beautiful nature, as well as hospitable people and excellent local cuisine, just like the rest of the Balkan region. Skopje might strike you as a city still searching for its true identity. You'll find everything here, from a chaotic Ottoman bazaar scented with coffee and spices, to a center featuring a historic stone bridge, all the way to pompous and kitschy buildings trying to mimic antiquity. It’s not a perfect city, but that’s exactly what makes it one of the most interesting spots in the Balkans. If you're looking for an authentic experience away from tourist stereotypes, you've come to the right place. Plus, you'll find the highest concentration of statues and monuments you've ever seen, and another interesting fact is that Mother Teresa was born here.

Skopje isn't love at first sight, but I guarantee you’ll remember this visit for a long time!

Skopje: A City of Contrasts, History, and Statues
Day 1–3 / 4
1

Day 1
Arrival in North Macedonia and first impressions

You will arrive in North Macedonia and head to your accommodation. If you have the energy, you can go to the city or leave the exploration for tomorrow. Usually, no visa is required to enter the country if you are a citizen of the European Union, even though North Macedonia is not directly part of the European Union or Schengen. Therefore, a passport or identity card is sufficient, but please verify the entry requirements specifically for your home country.

Day 2
Discovering the capital of North Macedonia and its diverse sites

1/10
10 places
7.76 km(1 h 50 min)

Embark on an exploration of Skopje. The city is a beautiful example of the peaceful coexistence of various religious and ethnic groups - Orthodox Christians, Muslims and Catholics live together here. During your journey through the city, you will see Orthodox churches, mosques and Christian churches. The city center offers a mix of ancient history, Ottoman culture and modern architecture. It is relatively small, you can easily walk through it. You will also see modern government buildings, which resemble ancient buildings with their columns and size - this is due to a controversial urban project, which aimed to give the capital a monumental and "ancient" look. Locals find the modern copies of ancient buildings rather laughable and even kitschy.

Day 3
To the canyon by boat and to the mountain outside the city

5 places
40 km(1 h 13 min)

You will visit the beautiful canyon in the Matka area and take a boat ride to the caves, some of which were discovered quite recently in the area. In the afternoon, you will climb the mountain above Skopje, where you can stay for a beautiful sunset.
