There are countless hiking trails, beaches, thermal bathing, both paid and free access to nature, you can pay for diving, horse riding or canyoning, whale watching, surfing, sailing, rock climbing or cycling around the island. From the plan of two free days, we had accumulated about 25,000 steps a day, and my feet hurt more than after three weeks in the Himalayas.
Waterfalls everywhere you look have one advantage over Madeira, and that is that they are not so icy and you can swim in all of them in peace. If you want to experience relaxation along with relaxed hiking, Sao Miguel is the way to go.
