Along the way, you'll come across several scenic viewpoints where you can glimpse into the mountainous Costa Rican nature. The biggest attraction, however, are the stalls with local fruit. After less than an hour's drive, you will arrive at the resort town of San Isidro de General. The seemingly less interesting town can offer an authentic atmosphere in the local streets or serve as a shopping opportunity in one of the local larger supermarkets.
Whether you stop in San Isidro or not, you can continue further into the mountains towards the city of Cartago. The road will constantly take you uphill to an altitude of almost 3,500 m above sea level. After about another hour's drive, you will reach a turnoff to the settlement called Quebrador, which you can choose as your destination for today.
From the Quebrador settlement, you can turn off the main road and take a gravel road, which is easily passable, all the way to Las Cataratas Lodge. A 4x4 vehicle is not necessary; you can easily manage the journey with a regular car. Free parking is available directly at the hotel reception.
This place is located in the heart of Los Quetzales National Park, at an altitude of almost 3,000 meters above sea level, where the mountain air mixes with the scent of the rainforest. At the reception, you can buy tickets for the forest trails that will lead you to the wild Catarata waterfalls, hidden deep in the misty forest. However, the real treasure of this place is the hummingbirds that you can observe directly around the reception. Although your return journey will be along the same route, you will have completely different views. We recommend stopping at the Cerro Zacatales peak, which is located right next to the main road. You can leave your car parked by the road and walk a few meters to the viewpoint itself. You will have a view like from an airplane, with the clouds below you. At the same time, you will reach the highest peak with an altitude of 3,399 m above sea level.
