Hello! My name is Pavel and this is what our trip to Sao Miguel looks like.
We're going to cross the island. You'll see beautiful places, taste great food and drink and meet new people. I think you have a lot to look forward to!
More on possible questions and what you can't read from the itinerary -
- As for transportation - airfare and car rental for the entire trip are included. I will always be the driver of one car, the others must be taken care of by one of the tour participants. The traffic on the island is calm, the roads are well maintained and there is nothing to worry about at all. The cars are insured against damage and theft. The whole island can be crossed without any problems within two hours. Before each trip we will compare our navigation systems so that we have the same destination and ideally the same route (we will use either Google Maps or Mapy.cz, Waze has failed me several times on the island)
- As for accommodation - everything is included. The accommodations usually include breakfast, but that may not be the rule (depending on the capacity of the accommodations in question). There are also towels and bath towels, usually special ones for use in the spa. But I definitely recommend taking at least a small towel with you, just in case :)
- As for meals in general - apart from the aforementioned breakfasts and the taster lunch at Furnas (Cozido), everyone pays for their own food. For the snacks we collectively bought and prepared sandwiches, and for the barbecue we each ate whatever we felt like. There is a grocery store in every major village, so it's not a problem to find food. We mostly went to restaurants for dinner, but personally I'm not opposed to barbecues more often because it has its own charm :)
- As for the schedule - it's not fixed - everything is governed by the weather. Of course we won't be going on long treks during rainy weather. We always plan the day before the evening according to the forecast. The weather in the Azores is mild, with daytime temperatures of 16-21 degrees Celsius, and that's basically perhaps the biggest possible fluctuation.We may miss some things, but we may also add some things. We only have a week and unfortunately it is not possible to visit the other islands outside of Sao Miguel in such a short time.
- Included in the price are admissions to the thermal baths listed here (no locker fees, but they are not required and you can take things with you to the pools where you can see them)

The first stop will be a formerly luxurious, now sadly abandoned hotel. Every Urbex fan's dream. The hotel rooms have spectacular views of 2 former volcanoes. However, the weather here is unpredictable and changes quickly. I have thought of that though, so it is possible if the weather doesn't work out the first time, that we will check back here later. Prepare sturdy shoes and be careful where you walk. Entry to the hotel is at your own risk!

After the hotel, we will walk around several more former volcanoes. Depending on the weather, we will also visit the viewpoints.The trek is not very difficult, there are a few hills and we will walk about 7km.
In the village in the crater we can have refreshments and visit the church.
In the afternoon we will go to see the now defunct thermal baths. The spa is built on solidified magma that flowed into the sea in the past. At low tide there is the possibility of bathing in the bay where the geothermal spring rises (a great experience!). There are toilets and changing facilities on site, including showers.
Beach known for its rock formations. Mosteiros means monastery and is named after the rock that commemorates the monastery.
A beautiful trek through the Azorean wilderness to Cabrito waterfall.
Lagoa do Fogo, or the lake of fire, is probably the most beautiful place on the whole island for me. The lake is often hidden in fog, however, there is a webcam, so if by chance the fog is not there, we will still go to it. You can park a short distance from the viewpoint and walk down to the beach from there. There is a swimming ban, but the walk through the wild nature to the surface of the lake is definitely worth it anyway!
We will also explore the town of Ribeira Grande, where you can buy liqueurs from the local liquor store (also in travel friendly 100ml versions). We can also see the town from the tower if it is accessible.
In the morning we will walk through the city centre on our way to the Botanical Gardens.
We can start the morning in a small, yet very colourful botanical garden just outside the city centre. The garden has huge fig trees, bamboo "forests" and nooks and crannies full of monsters. Entrance costs 5 euros per person.
Next we will visit a pineapple plantation right in the city centre. The visit is quite quick, we will walk through a couple of greenhouses, learn how pineapples are grown and then have the opportunity to sample lots of pineapple dishes/drinks and possibly buy a souvenir.
At the first tea stop we will learn about the history of tea cultivation on the island and get a free tasting. If you wish, you can then buy tea to take home (definitely recommended!).
A few kilometres further on there is a plantation many times bigger, which includes a smaller circuit, which we will of course walk. At the tea leaf processing factory itself, we will see how the tea is picked and "bagged". Afterwards, we will also have a tasting of several varieties and a souvenir shop. The teas from here are a little different and in addition to black tea, you can also buy local green tea and lots of different flavored versions.
And in the evening we'll have a barbecue with a view! There are plenty of barbecue spots like this in the Azores, so we're going to use one of them. If it works out, we'll enjoy a beautiful sunset and good food. It's magical!

Because we still have an important visit to Terra Nostra Park! One of the most beautiful thermal baths surrounded by a colourful botanical garden. They are open from 10:00 to 16:00, then only to guests of the hotel belonging to the complex.
We will have a tasting menu for our number of people at lunch. It includes several servings of cozida, grilled tuna and various other goodies.
And in the evening we will visit another thermal bath. This spa consists of eight pools of varying depths. Definitely not to be missed, but can of course be rescheduled if it's too much thermal bathing in one day :)

We can also visit a small park (10 euros/person). There is an abandoned villa in the park, which was owned by a British traveller.
We'll go around the eastern part and return to the south
In the morning, we'll check out the surfing beach. If you want, you can rent a surfboard and try the waves. I'm not really into that :D
