Join us on a journey of discovery with Central Java, and experience the (un)ordinary moments of everyday life in and around a Javanese village.
How do we help?
TravelNative focuses on the health and school sectors. These two fields are vital in the development of any country. Advancement, quality and length of life, education, employment, social awareness, contribution to the betterment of our world. All this and much more depends on the education of children and quality health care.
Money alone does not help or develop. On the other hand, equipment for schools, supplies for children, equipment for hospitals, salaries for medical staff, medicines and more are beneficial.
We do not "export" Czech or European culture. We do not tell teachers what to teach and how to teach, we do not tell doctors how to treat. We do not interfere with the established systems of the countries we visit.
Because of our collective help, we give space for children from poor families to have a similar "starting line" as children from privileged families. We are supplying health centres in the mountains with basic equipment and medicines so that they can provide a better service to people living in remote, especially mountainous areas. Exceptionally, we will pay the salary of a teacher or health worker. There are still fewer people in the world who have the opportunity to travel for knowledge than those who do not. We are one of them. It is both a privilege and a responsibility. We develop the places we visit and reciprocate the opportunity to travel, discover and explore because it is fair.
We will land in Indonesia at Jakarta International Airport. Here we will be picked up by Paul and Asep who will spend the whole stay with us. We will settle in, acclimatise and Asep will fill us in on the basics of Indonesian culture and explain the differences between the different ethnic minorities. We will stay in Jakarta for 2 nights.
On the second day, we will head to Betawi to explore the Jakarta culture with all that it entails - cultural performances, traditional markets full of food and fresh coconuts.
In the morning we head east, far beyond Jakarta. A quiet but relatively quick train ride will give us a view of the changing landscape from arid fields to overgrown Central Java. After lunch we arrive in the town of Purwokerto, where we check in and spend 2 nights.
After breakfast we will go on a day trip to an area called Baturaden. We will discover the beauty of waterfalls, lakes and beautiful green rice paddies at the foot of the Slamat volcano. At the sulphur hot springs, we'll enjoy a massage with healing thermal water and head back down through the semi-jungle.
Next day We go to Asep's birthplace - a village called Gumiwang. We will spend a total of 4 nights here, getting to know the locals and becoming part of the community.
In Gumiwang we will visit a local market where we will buy fresh ingredients to cook traditional Indonesian dishes. We will spend time with the locals, watching them work in the ponds, catch fish and prepare Indonesian style barbecue. We'll enjoy freshly picked coconuts and freshly roasted coffee at a home roastery. We will try our hand at making traditional hand-painted batik, which we will take home as an unusual souvenir.
Early in the morning, we will embark on a full day trip to the Indian Ocean.On the southern coast of the island, we will visit some of the most beautiful beaches and viewpoints, explore the mangroves in the area and, weather permitting, enjoy some water fun.
After breakfast, we will head to the Dieng Plateau, which rises at an altitude of almost 3000 m. We will taste the carica fruit that grows only here and in Brazil, discover the beauty of ancient Hindu temples, a sulphur lake and endless vegetable beds.
Early in the morning, we'll hike into the mountains to experience one of the most beautiful sunrises - with a view of the majestic volcano in front of us. In addition, we will climb into the crater of an extinct volcano and at the top of the volcano we will get a view of 3 other active volcanoes in Central Java.
I descend from the mountains to the town of Banjarnegara, where we stay in traditional Javanese houses at the PIKAS resort. We relax, discover the hidden spots in the area and enjoy a selection of tea and coffee. We will spend 2 nights here.
Those interested can also go down the river on a raft. We will take part in English lessons at school and participate in a social project to help distribute food to the poor in the area.
We head towards Purwokerto and from there we take the train to Jakarta. We will stay in the historic district and enjoy the nightlife of the big city.
We will buy souvenirs and spend our last evening together over a good meal. Pavla and Asep will accompany us to the airport where we will fly back home full of impressions and unusual experiences.
