The city is also home to the Roman amphitheater, which is one of the largest in the Balkans and one of the city's most important landmarks. It reflects a rich history dating back to antiquity and is definitely worth a quick stop while walking through the city. If you're not much of a history buff, you don't have to spend money on admission. You can also view the amphitheater from the street through the fence🤫
You can park your car for a few coins at Private Parking next to the National Archaeological Museum and walk everywhere from there.
The Vollga Promenade is one of the most pleasant spots in Durrës for a relaxing walk by the sea. You'll find plenty of cafes and bars here where you can sit and enjoy a drink 🍹 If you stay until the evening, you'll enjoy a beautiful sunset with a view of the Adriatic Sea 🌅
At the end of the promenade, there's also a concrete monument called Sfinksi from 1968. There's a nice view of the sea from there! 🏄
Vlorë is a lively city with a distinct Southern Albanian vibe and significant historical importance. It acts as an imaginary gateway to the Albanian Riviera and is an ideal spot to stop for a while, grab a bite, and soak up the local pace before heading further along the coast.

Tip: When you pass Bar Restorant Dervishalliu, you'll soon find a spot on the gravel on your left where you can park. I recommend getting off the road and walking around a bit. When we stopped there and walked around, we had that whole beautiful view all to ourselves... without any other tourists. Everyone else usually stops a bit further down at Panorama Llogara. We even found a bunker (slightly down the slope)... and there wasn't a single person there either 🙈
Further down the road, there is also the Big Bunker where you can stop and explore. The whole hill is literally full of smaller and larger bunkers scattered all around. Looking at them, it's easy to realize the scale on which bunkers were built all over the country.🤔

You can walk along the walls, look out at the sea, and the whole place feels more like a peaceful viewpoint than a typical historical site 🏰
As for parking, you can easily leave your car right in front of the fortress; there's plenty of space there.

While snorkeling, we not only saw various types of fish but even a small octopus. When we visited again later in the evening, there were huge waves... we couldn't swim in them, but it was still quite an experience!🔥
The only downside is the road to the beach. The last section isn't in the best condition, so you need to drive slowly and carefully. Once you drive all the way down, the parking area will be right in front of you. Then just walk down a few steps and jump straight into the water!

It's about a 2km walk from the parking lot, but the path is well-maintained and even suitable for strollers.
An interesting fact is that divers have reached about 50 meters, but the actual depth of the eye remains unclear.
Gjirokastër is a historic mountain town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its stone houses and narrow cobbled streets. Walking through the old town has a completely different vibe compared to the coast; it's much quieter and feels very authentic.
I recommend parking in the garages. It's great that they're covered, so your car won't bake while you take your time exploring. You can only pay in cash using the local currency (leke), so be prepared for that. It’s perfect because you're within walking distance of everything from there 😁
Gjirokastër Castle stands high above the city and is one of the largest fortresses in Albania. In the past, it served as both a defensive point and a prison, and today you can find a museum and old military equipment on its premises. The best part of the visit is a walk along the ramparts, which offer a beautiful view of the city and the surrounding mountains.

The Bënja Thermal Baths are natural thermal springs near an old Ottoman stone bridge just outside the town of Përmet. The water is warm all year round, and the site has been used for bathing for centuries, mainly for relaxation and its supposed healing properties. It's the perfect stop to rest during your journey, where you can sit in the water for a while and switch off from everything.
Just like us, you can also hike further into the canyon to find more secluded spots for a swim 💯
If you're driving, park a bit before you reach the springs. A large parking lot is currently under construction, so for now, you can park here (for a small cash fee to the locals).
Berat is a city that will win you over at first sight; the houses clinging to the hillside look like they're winking at each other. That’s exactly why it’s called the "city of a thousand windows," and a walk through its old streets is a joy in itself.

The city is also home to the Roman amphitheater, which is one of the largest in the Balkans and one of the city's most important landmarks. It reflects a rich history dating back to antiquity and is definitely worth a quick stop while walking through the city. If you're not much of a history buff, you don't have to spend money on admission. You can also view the amphitheater from the street through the fence🤫
You can park your car for a few coins at Private Parking next to the National Archaeological Museum and walk everywhere from there.
The Vollga Promenade is one of the most pleasant spots in Durrës for a relaxing walk by the sea. You'll find plenty of cafes and bars here where you can sit and enjoy a drink 🍹 If you stay until the evening, you'll enjoy a beautiful sunset with a view of the Adriatic Sea 🌅
At the end of the promenade, there's also a concrete monument called Sfinksi from 1968. There's a nice view of the sea from there! 🏄
Vlorë is a lively city with a distinct Southern Albanian vibe and significant historical importance. It acts as an imaginary gateway to the Albanian Riviera and is an ideal spot to stop for a while, grab a bite, and soak up the local pace before heading further along the coast.

From one spot, you can see the mountains dropping straight into the sea, and if visibility is good, you can even see the long coastline. It’s an ideal short stop during your trip where you can just step out of the car, take a deep breath, and enjoy the view for a moment 😍
Tip: When you pass Bar Restorant Dervishalliu, you'll soon find a spot on the gravel on your left where you can park. I recommend getting off the road and walking around a bit. When we stopped there and walked around, we had that whole beautiful view all to ourselves... without any other tourists. Everyone else usually stops a bit further down at Panorama Llogara. We even found a bunker (slightly down the slope)... and there wasn't a single person there either 🙈
Further down the road, there is also the Big Bunker where you can stop and explore. The whole hill is literally full of smaller and larger bunkers scattered all around. Looking at them, it's easy to realize the scale on which bunkers were built all over the country.🤔
Drymades Beach is located right below the hill by the road over the Llogara Pass. It's an ideal spot to head down to the sea and take a quick dip in the clear water.

The fortress in Porto Palermo was built in the early 19th century by Ali Pasha of Tepelena as a defensive point along the coast. It was used to control the bay and shipping traffic in this part of Albania. Today, it's a perfect spot for a quick stop. You can walk along the walls, look out at the sea, and the whole place feels more like a peaceful viewpoint than a typical historical site 🏰
As for parking, you can easily leave your car right in front of the fortress; there's plenty of space there.

Upon arrival, park your car at your accommodation. Afterward, you can easily walk anywhere in Ksamil and soak up the local atmosphere.

No need to rush anywhere today. You've got a swim at Mirror Beach ahead of you, a smaller bay with crystal clear water and, if you're as lucky as we were, some rich underwater life too 🤿

While snorkeling, we not only saw various types of fish but even a small octopus. When we visited again later in the evening, there were huge waves... we couldn't swim in them, but it was still quite an experience!🔥
The only downside is the road to the beach. The last section isn't in the best condition, so you need to drive slowly and carefully. Once you drive all the way down, the parking area will be right in front of you. Then just walk down a few steps and jump straight into the water!

Follow this canal and walk along the pavement next to the road all the way to Butrint.

The Blue Eye is a natural spring with incredibly blue water that looks almost unreal. It's a nice place to take a walk, snap a few photos of the beautiful scenery, and relax. Simply the perfect spot to slow down a bit during your trip 🌞
It's about a 2km walk from the parking lot, but the path is well-maintained and even suitable for strollers.
An interesting fact is that divers have reached about 50 meters, but the actual depth of the eye remains unclear.
Gjirokastër is a historic mountain town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its stone houses and narrow cobbled streets. Walking through the old town has a completely different vibe compared to the coast; it's much quieter and feels very authentic.
I recommend parking in the garages. It's great that they're covered, so your car won't bake while you take your time exploring. You can only pay in cash using the local currency (leke), so be prepared for that. It’s perfect because you're within walking distance of everything from there 😁
Gjirokastër Castle stands high above the city and is one of the largest fortresses in Albania. In the past, it served as both a defensive point and a prison, and today you can find a museum and old military equipment on its premises. The best part of the visit is a walk along the ramparts, which offer a beautiful view of the city and the surrounding mountains.

The Bënja Thermal Baths are natural thermal springs near an old Ottoman stone bridge just outside the town of Përmet. The water is warm all year round, and the site has been used for bathing for centuries, mainly for relaxation and its supposed healing properties. It's the perfect stop to rest during your journey, where you can sit in the water for a while and switch off from everything.
Just like us, you can also hike further into the canyon to find more secluded spots for a swim 💯
If you're driving, park a bit before you reach the springs. A large parking lot is currently under construction, so for now, you can park here (for a small cash fee to the locals).
Berat is a city that will win you over at first sight; the houses clinging to the hillside look like they're winking at each other. That’s exactly why it’s called the "city of a thousand windows," and a walk through its old streets is a joy in itself.

Walk around the main Skanderbeg square, check out the colorful buildings that are iconic to the city, and if you have time, head over to Bunk'Art. It's a museum hidden inside a giant communist bunker. For a coffee or a drink, head to the Blloku district, which is buzzing with cafes, restaurants, and locals enjoying the city to the fullest.

If your flight schedule allows, definitely don't skip a trip to Bovilla lake and Gamti Mountain. It's a short, moderately difficult hike to a viewpoint with stunning views of the lake, canyons, and surrounding mountains. But if you have an early morning flight, feel free to just head straight to the airport like we did 🛫
Mount Gamti is a striking mountain above Lake Bovilla and one of those places where you feel like you've completely escaped civilization. The climb isn't long, which makes it even more worth it. At the top, you're greeted with wide-open views of the lake, canyons, and surrounding mountains. It's the perfect spot for a short hike where you can get a little workout in, then just sit back, look around, and soak it all in.
