Voulismeno Aloni is a sinkhole found at the foot of Mount Stroumboulas, next to the old national road, at the 14th kilometer from Heraklion to Rethymnon, on the island of Crete.
It is a ground subsidence with a circular shape measuring up to 90 meters in diameter. Its slopes are steep and vertical, reaching a height of 60 meters from the bottom of the formation. Access to the interior is possible on foot from the southwestern side along a certain path.
Geologists think that it is a sinkhole, which was formed by the depression of a cave, during the Pleistocene era.
Contrary to its name, it is thought that it was not used as a threshing floor.

There is a small, flat path that goes all the way around this beautiful, blue-green body of water, making it a great place for a relaxed walk with lovely reflections of the surrounding mountains. The tavernas along its shores offer fantastic fresh trout, caught from within its waters. It is a great, hassle-free spot to unwind for an hour or so, have a great meal, and enjoy a different and more verdant face of Psiloritis Geopark.
Gergeri is a solid, traditional village in the southern foothills of Psiloritis with strong agricultural traditions. Although it is a practical village for the locals to live in, it has a unique authentic character.
For the visitor, it is an important village to visit as it is the starting point for the tough 4x4 track to the magnificent Rouvas Forest. It is an important village for hikers and drivers to visit in order to reach this natural treasure.

Voulismeno Aloni is a sinkhole found at the foot of Mount Stroumboulas, next to the old national road, at the 14th kilometer from Heraklion to Rethymnon, on the island of Crete.
It is a ground subsidence with a circular shape measuring up to 90 meters in diameter. Its slopes are steep and vertical, reaching a height of 60 meters from the bottom of the formation. Access to the interior is possible on foot from the southwestern side along a certain path.
Geologists think that it is a sinkhole, which was formed by the depression of a cave, during the Pleistocene era.
Contrary to its name, it is thought that it was not used as a threshing floor.
Get some exercise with a hike up Mount Stoumboulas! This is just a 5-minute drive from Voulismeno Aloni, but it provides a surprisingly rugged and peaceful experience in nature.
The main trail takes you through herbs to the top and the chapel of Profitis Ilias. Your reward is a fantastic view from the top - it is considered one of the best views on the island - a 360-degree view of Heraklion, the sea, and the mountains. It is a good workout but a doable hike for a morning or afternoon adventure.

Voulismeno Aloni is a sinkhole found at the foot of Mount Stroumboulas, next to the old national road, at the 14th kilometer from Heraklion to Rethymnon, on the island of Crete.
It is a ground subsidence with a circular shape measuring up to 90 meters in diameter. Its slopes are steep and vertical, reaching a height of 60 meters from the bottom of the formation. Access to the interior is possible on foot from the southwestern side along a certain path.
Geologists think that it is a sinkhole, which was formed by the depression of a cave, during the Pleistocene era.
Contrary to its name, it is thought that it was not used as a threshing floor.
Get some exercise with a hike up Mount Stoumboulas! This is just a 5-minute drive from Voulismeno Aloni, but it provides a surprisingly rugged and peaceful experience in nature.
The main trail takes you through herbs to the top and the chapel of Profitis Ilias. Your reward is a fantastic view from the top - it is considered one of the best views on the island - a 360-degree view of Heraklion, the sea, and the mountains. It is a good workout but a doable hike for a morning or afternoon adventure.

Voulismeno Aloni is a sinkhole found at the foot of Mount Stroumboulas, next to the old national road, at the 14th kilometer from Heraklion to Rethymnon, on the island of Crete.
It is a ground subsidence with a circular shape measuring up to 90 meters in diameter. Its slopes are steep and vertical, reaching a height of 60 meters from the bottom of the formation. Access to the interior is possible on foot from the southwestern side along a certain path.
Geologists think that it is a sinkhole, which was formed by the depression of a cave, during the Pleistocene era.
Contrary to its name, it is thought that it was not used as a threshing floor.
