At the airport, you will go through passport control, where you need to present the entry form. Then exchange a few dollars or euros for Mauritian rupees, they have a very good exchange rate. Pick up your car directly in front of the terminal (according to the instructions you receive before departure). There is a common house for all rental companies here.

What to bring from home: passport, completed entry form, plug adapter, snorkel, goggles, water shoes, sunscreen, head covering, mosquito spray, and possibly a power bank. eSIM from Breeze worked great for mobile data for us.

Blue Bay is located just 15 minutes by car from the airport. In a moment you will find yourself in a tropical paradise, where in addition to lush vegetation you will find a beautiful beach, restaurants, street food and on the way also a hypermarket with McDonald's.

Have an excellent breakfast at Naked Foods. Then head to Blue Bay Beach to observe the underwater world with a snorkel and goggles. The entrance is gradual, ideal for children. I recommend water shoes, although they are not essential. On weekends, you'll see Mauritians having picnics on the beach and in the adjacent park. You can take a boat to Blue Bay Marine Park - tickets can be bought directly in the park near the beach. For example, from a glass-bottom boat, you can see fish even with very small children. The boat is covered, so you'll stay dry even in the rain. For lunch, you can try street food or go to the stylish restaurant The Spot Café.

In the afternoon, take a walk along the promenade ending with the Abolition of Slavery Memorial. Stop by the market in the center near the bus station for fresh fruit, vegetables, or souvenirs. The market is open daily from 7 AM to 4:30 PM. You can park without any problems anywhere on the street, there is no parking fee.

Enjoy the end of the day at La Cambuse beach, which also has a gradual entry into the water and ideal conditions for snorkeling. On the beach you will find stalls with fruit, ice cream, drinks... For dinner, head to The Bamboo Restaurant & Bar. I recommend booking in advance. 

Feed the largest tortoises in the world. This is a zoological park where the biggest experience is a direct encounter with the tortoises (included in the entrance fee) and feeding them (costs a few dozen crowns). You can also have a crocodile steak in the local restaurant. You will also encounter bats, which you will see flying all over the island and whose wingspan is up to 80 cm. It is open every day and parking is free. You can find the current entrance fees on the website.

Visit the colonial residence of St. Aubin, which consists of several buildings. See the presentation of the entire complex here.

1. Visit the luxury restaurant and have lunch made from local products - vanilla or rum. Keep the receipt, thanks to it you will see the pavilion at the vanilla plantation for free and taste rum.
2. Head to the vanilla plantation - tours are in English and French (paid extra). See the largest pods you've ever seen.
3. Taste rum in the local rum distillery.
4. The buildings are connected by an extensive park where you can watch turtles, deer or geese. You can easily spend 2-3 hours there.

Take a break on the beach and enjoy the views. The beach is not suitable for swimming.

Discover the first waterfalls. You can swim in them. An asphalt road leads to them between Chamouny and Suninam. On the way from Chamouny, you will see signs that will lead you between the houses. Then you will continue on an unpaved road on foot.

You can also stop at St. Felix Beach and take a walk along the beach. There is an asphalt cycle path here, suitable for both bicycles and inline skates.

Park in the lay-by on the road to access the iconic viewpoint. In 5 minutes you will walk up the stairs and have a unique view of the iconic Le Morne mountain and Baie du Cap.

Climb Le Morne Brabant Mountain. With small children, only go to the first viewpoint (approx. 30 min), then you need to use your hands and feet to get to the top, the climb is steep. I recommend going in the morning so you don't get hot. Sunscreen, headgear, drink and snack with you. Sign the book at the beginning of the route. The start of the route is located here. You can reach the place by car on an unpaved road.

Enjoy an all-inclusive paradise. Pleasant gradual entry into the water (better with shoes), romantic boats, palm trees, the iconic Le Morne mountain, snorkeling. Take a walk on the beach in front of the hotel complexes, you will also find swings over the water for great photos. Near the beach is the Emba Filao restaurant or a few street food stalls with fruit. Parking is free and right by the beach. You can book a seaplane flight in advance, which is always only for 1 person, but two planes can take off at once. You will see underwater waterfalls, which are located near Le Morne mountain and are only visible from the plane.

Book activities in advance at Valle Adventures Park. Ride on ATVs, walk across the suspension bridge, ride the zip line, or visit the children's area of the park. 

Visit the entire Chamarel Protected Area - first with your own car, and arrange for a taxi for the afternoon. 

There is an entrance fee for each person in the car when entering the area. 

1. Chamarel Waterfall - the highest waterfall in Mauritius, measuring almost 100 m. You can view it from the opposite slope.
2. Seven Coloured Earth - the soil here has 7 colours - it is a geological formation of hardened sand dunes formed by volcanic activity. There are also turtles on site that you can observe (do not feed). There is also a restaurant with a beautiful view.
3. For an extra fee, you can visit Ebony Forest, which is a unique nature reserve that you can walk through or take a jeep ride. 

Visiting the first two places will take you about an hour. 

Helicopters take off from Chamarel, which are designed for several people (usually 6, so you can fly with someone else). They will take you over underwater waterfalls or even on a flight over the entire island. More about operators here or here. 

In the afternoon, order a taxi to take you to the Chamarel Rhumerie, where you should (ideally in advance) book a tour. However, you can try arriving without a booking and usually you won't have to wait long. You will go through the entire production process (approx. 20 min) and at the end there will be a tasting of about 11 rums. Juice is available for children. You can buy souvenirs here, but there is a wider selection in all supermarkets.

Head to the 563-meter high Tourelle de Tamarin. Climbing it is easier than Le Morne Brabant and you will have breathtaking views of the surrounding area. The trail is 1.5 km one way and starts here. You can walk it with children in a total of 2-3 hours. There are no climbing sections, but expect a steep climb. But it's worth it. Then relax on Tamarin beach with a view of the surfers or book a lesson. Finally, stop at the last active Mauritian salt pans. Salt has been extracted here in a 200-year-old way and you can buy it. You can walk among the pans and stop at the local museum. It is open Monday - Friday 8:30 - 16:00, Saturday 8:30 - 11:30. 

Enjoy snorkeling on the beach. Water shoes are highly recommended. For lunch or dinner, choose one of the street food options, such as Blue Box Food - Chez Colas. 

Flic en Flac is an ideal base for exploring the island - you will find a shop (Carrefour), an exchange office opposite, lots of restaurants, bars, a beach, tour operators, etc.

Parking is paid for in Port Louis, the capital city. You can park at Caudan Waterfront or at SFL Caudan Parking P1, from where a shuttle will take you to Caudan Waterfront for free approximately 2-3 times per hour (3 minutes or approximately 10-15 minutes on foot). Then set out to discover:

1. Caudan Waterfront - a modern coastal shopping area with restaurants, fast food outlets, known for the umbrellas above the street
2. Blue Penny Museum - located in the Caudan Waterfront area, you will see the Red and Blue Mauritius - the most valuable stamps in the world
3. Place d'Armes - square
4. Central Market - full of fruit, vegetables, meat or the typical drink alouda, the busiest is in the morning between 7 - 11 am, open daily
5. Jummah Mosque - be sure to go inside, you will breathe in a peaceful atmosphere compared to the bustling center, free of charge
6. Chinatown - located right behind the mosque, it is only a few streets, but there is typical food or a pharmacy with Chinese medicine
7. Citadel (Fort Adelaide) - you can get here from Chinatown in about 15-20 minutes, you need to climb a hill, but it is not difficult and the climb is worth it - there is a beautiful view of the city
8. St. Louise Cathedral - take a free look at the Roman Catholic cathedral, which was built of grey common stone
9. Aapravasi Ghat - is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and serves as a museum of slavery and colonialism, as it was the center for the transport of slaves from India to the entire British Empire. Admission is free, Mon-Sat, 9am-4pm
10. Mauritius Postal Museum - send a postcard home directly from the museum
11. Odysseo Oceanarium - not only children will be thrilled by the fish, sharks and turtles

You can manage to walk through everything in about half a day, but with children it is really a full day trip.

Have dinner again in Flic en Flac at Zub Express - an Indian Muslim restaurant. You can also come here for lunch. There is a beautiful view from the terrace on the first floor. 

Visit the Hindu temple, which is open 24/7.

If you like visiting zoos, consider this place too. It is located a short distance from Flic en Flac. Some love it (especially those who try the attractions for extra fees), some see it as a waste of time (especially if you're "just going to the zoo"). You will spend at least half a day at the zoo. It has 5 parts - birds, predators, safari, zip-line park, children's park (animals you can pet, carousels, swings...). You can find admission prices on the website and for an extra charge there is: walking with lions, feeding lions, safari by car in the lion and tiger enclosure, interaction with cheetah, zip-line, bobsled. You can also ride camels or walk in the tortoise enclosure.

Enjoy the beautiful sunsets in Flic en Flac. For dinner, go to KING SNACK SEAFOOD CORNER, where they don't have a printed menu. Choose from the fresh fish they have on the counter. 

Half-day or full-day boat trips are organised from almost all parts of the island. The most popular is a visit to 5 islands, including a barbecue lunch and snorkelling (full-day trip). You can buy it in all resorts near the beach or order it online via booking.com or e.g. TripAdvisor. Just always check where the boat departs from.

A cheaper option, where you are also in control of your time, is a trip to Ile aux Cerfs (by ferry). Drive to the pier Pointe Maurice, which is located approximately 1.5 km south of Trou d ´Eau Douce. The ferry runs every day between 8:30-19h, every 30 minutes, the journey time is 10 minutes and the destination is Masala Jetty. Relax on the local beaches or play golf. You can walk between the islands on sandbars. You can rent sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach, there is a bar, bistro, toilets... The official website of the island including information about the ferry can be found at ileauxcerfsleisureisland.com. The price of a return ticket was MUR 500 in 2026.

For dinner, order a takeaway pizza or have it at the mini restaurant PizzArt.

Wander through roughly a thousand stalls located in this large marketplace. It mainly features fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, souvenirs, clothing, fabrics... You will also find food stalls here. The prices of vanilla are definitely more favorable here after bargaining than at a vanilla plantation. The market is only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 6 am - 5 pm, with some closing around 3 pm. Free parking is available in the adjacent large parking lot. 

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the market at Palmar or Belle Mare beach. There are many top-notch resorts here. 

On the way back, stop at a magical vanilla plantation. Visitors usually don't have to wait for official tour times (but you can make a reservation online if you prefer). As soon as possible, a family member or staff will take care of you and give you a private tour - approx. for an hour incl. tastings and can be easily adapted for children. You will see not only vanilla, but also coffee, cocoa beans, bananas, herbs, etc. Afterwards, you will taste jams, sugar cane juice, local chips and vanilla products. The whole farm has a friendly feel. A tour costs 400 MUR (half price for children).

Today, head south again. Visit the factory where you will see not only a museum but also live tea processing - to Domain de Bois Cheri. The factory is easy to find, and visit it on weekdays in the morning (it's better to write them an e-mail to verify, it should be until 11 am). Only then you will see workers working with tea leaves, all the machines will be running, and women will be putting teas into tea bags. After the tour, tea tasting is included, which takes place next to the restaurant, about a 5-minute drive away. In the restaurant with a luxurious view, you can have meals using tea leaves.

After visiting the tea factory, take a peaceful stop at the most sacred place for Hindus in Mauritius - the volcanic lake Grand Bassin. You will see several temples here and you can climb the stairs to the Hanuman shrine, from where you have a beautiful view of the entire lake and surroundings. Also, stop at the two statues that measure 33 m. You certainly won't miss them. These are the statue of the god Shiva - Mangal Mahadev and the goddess with the golden lion - Durga Mata Murti.

Don't miss this stop. Just get out of the car and after a few meters you will enjoy views of wooded areas and a 70 m high waterfall. 

From this place you can also go to the highest mountain of Mauritius - Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire (Black River Peak). The route from here is the easiest, it is 3.5 km in one direction, an elevation gain of about 200 m and takes at least 2.5 hours in total. 

Take a walk through Black River Gorges National Park. There are plenty of trails of varying difficulty, so there's something for everyone. There is free parking at the beginning, then you pass the entrance cottage by the river and continue according to your choice. With small children, you can take the path along the river, which takes about 30 - 45 minutes (1.5 km) one way. There are no refreshments in the park. Along the way, you have to ford a small river (you can jump over the stones or cross barefoot over the bridge) - a great adventure for children. I recommend bringing insect repellent just in case.

A beautiful waterfall that is easily accessible with children. Park in the designated parking lot off the main road (Saint Pierre Bypass Road), free of charge. Signs will guide you to the waterfall. It's a short walk (about 15 min) to the waterfall; you can look at it from above and then go under it, even take a swim.

Visit the largest shopping center in Mauritius. You can easily spend several hours here. There is a hypermarket, fashion, electronics... and a large food court.

Take a stroll through the beautiful Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, famous for its water lilies that can even hold a child. But better not try it :) Besides a wide range of flora, you will see deer, turtles, an old sugar cane mill or the Mon Plaisir chateau. 

Settle in and walk to Mont Choisy beach, which is one of the most beautiful on the island. You can swim in it without water shoes (although I would still recommend them), but there are very few corals here. Take a walk through the adjacent forest.

Stop by the small center and the beach to soak up the local atmosphere.

Visit the fantastic sugar museum, which children and adults will enjoy. Children can fill out a leaflet (in English) and receive a reward at the end. For everyone, the entrance fee includes a tasting of sugar, honey, jams, rums (from the oldest distillery on the island) and other products. Take a group visit to a sugar cane field, where you can try cutting it. It's a short walk from the museum. You need to book in advance (usually takes place on Wednesday). 

See how wooden ship models are handmade. The tour is free and includes a visit to the museum and workshop, where a guide will take you. The whole visit takes about 20 minutes and you can buy a small boat as a souvenir or order a large model that can be delivered anywhere in the world.
