In the afternoon, after 3 PM, when the sun isn't as intense, head over to nearby Zadar. You'll instantly fall in love with this ancient city thanks to the two attractions at the very end of the waterfront. Wrap up your walk in the historic center, which is packed with ice cream shops and street performers.
Zadar is the fifth-largest city in Croatia and has an absolutely unique atmosphere. It’s a place where the thousand-year history of the ancient Romans and Venetians meets modern architectural concepts. At the very end of the Zadar peninsula, you’ll find two world-unique attractions designed by architect Nikola Bašić. The first is the Sea Organ – an incredible system of pipes built into the stone steps on the coast. As the waves hit the shore, they push air through the whistles, so the sea literally plays its own ever-changing melody. Right next to the organ lies a giant circle of 300 glass solar panels. They collect energy throughout the day and launch a fascinating light show after sunset.
The entire city lies on a peninsula and is surrounded by walls that are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Right in the center, you’ll find the remains of a Roman Forum from the 1st century BC, as well as the Church of St. Donatus, which is the symbol of the city. If you want to taste something local, Zadar is home to the famous Maraschino liqueur, which is produced according to a secret recipe from local bitter marasca cherries.
All good things must come to an end, and it's time to say goodbye to Zaton. Enjoy your breakfast in the morning, and if your flight time allows, you can take one last dip in the sea, collect a few final seashells as souvenirs, and then all that's left is to pack your bags and head home.
