TRANSPORTATION TIPS
Take a breath at the Pantà de Sau reservoir. Before you head to the hotel, take a detour from the main route and stop at the magical Pantà de Sau reservoir. This place will instantly transport you to another world. The calm water surface is surrounded by massive reddish cliff walls, and if you're lucky, the tip of the ancient submerged church of Sant Romà de Sau will be peeking out from the water. It's the perfect spot to slow down. Kick off your shoes, walk barefoot along the shore, feel the ground beneath your feet, and let the peaceful energy of the surrounding nature wash away all your travel stress.

You'll find a stunning view of the lake right here. You can get there by car, though the road is a bit rough, it's definitely passable. I wouldn't recommend walking it, since the road is hidden by trees, so you wouldn't get any views and you'd just waste time on the long trek.
You can enjoy the view of the flooded church from the information center, which also has a playground, a picnic area, and parking. At the time of my visit, only a tiny part of the steeple was sticking out, which you might easily miss in the photo.

Check if your accommodation has parking. If not, you can park for free and without time limits in the so-called white zones. Blue zones are paid. You can recognize them by the blue lines on the road. I've marked one large free parking lot here for you, it just has a rough surface.

Swap the historical city of Vic for the fresh mountain air of the Pyrenees. Drive to the stone village of Queralbs, the gateway to the stunning high-altitude Vall de Núria valley (1,961 m above sea level). Experience a ride on the famous Cremallera rack railway, which will take you through rocky gorges and past waterfalls into a valley where no roads lead. Enjoy the peace by the crystal-clear lake, take a walk, and soak in the mountain energy. You will head back to Queralbs on foot along a beautiful historic trail. A safe but breathtaking descent through wild nature along a babbling stream awaits you. Craving a change? Choose an adrenaline-filled or a more relaxed hiking alternative.
Queralbs is a picturesque stone village nestled in the arms of the Pyrenean giants, which will immediately enchant you with its authentic mountain atmosphere, slate roofs, and tranquility. This is exactly where the real, fascinating part of the journey to the sacred Vall de Núria valley begins. Here, you will board the unique rack railway (Cremallera), which is a one-of-a-kind piece of engineering—it will take you through wild gorges and past roaring waterfalls into a valley where no roads lead. Before you set off for these panoramic views, take a moment to breathe, walk through the quiet streets of Queralbs, and feel the power of the pure mountain nature that surrounds this place. You can also sit down for a cup of coffee with a view of the charming mountains.
Information about prices, capacity, and train departures, including online ticket purchases, is available here. Tickets can also be purchased on-site via a machine. At the time of my visit, the parking was free.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES

From here, you'll head along the marked Camí Vell hiking trail. A safe but breathtaking descent through wild nature awaits you along a babbling brook. The route is approx. 8 km long, mainly heading downhill with a drop of about 850 m, and you can find it here.

Explore a picturesque stone village, sit down at a cafe, and just relax.

If you have some extra time, you can also take a walk to the Salt del Grill waterfall. It's 2.4 km from the parking lot see route.

In the Garrotxa region, you'll find the perfect balance between the silence of an ancient forest, the raw energy of extinct volcanoes, and a visit to an exceptional place with deep significance. First, you'll head out to admire the exposed cross-section of the Croscat volcano, which reveals the fascinating colorful layers of the earth's interior. Then, you'll dive into the silence of the La Fageda d'en Jordà beech forest. Its existence is a total natural miracle—it grows on a rolling lava flow left behind thousands of years ago by the Croscat volcano. Here, you can spot the so-called tossols, which are unique formations created thousands of years ago during a volcanic eruption. Afterward, you'll visit the La Fageda farm, where the most honest local products are made from pure ingredients. Finally, you'll descend directly into the crater of the Santa Margarida volcano, in the very center of which a mysterious stone chapel is hidden. And now for the best part! You'll head down into the silence of the forest to reach natural pools and waterfalls.
From the parking lot, follow the route see map towards Volcà del Croscat. Today's main hike is approx. 13 km with an elevation gain of around 300 m. At the time of my visit, the mentioned parking was free (2026).
It is the youngest and tallest volcano on the Iberian Peninsula, with the last eruption dating back approximately 14,000 years. The volcanic cone is horseshoe-shaped, and volcanic gravel was mined from its northeastern flank until the early 1990s, which exposed the internal structure of the cone from top to bottom.

La Fageda d'en Jordà is part of the Parc Natural de la Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa protected area. At first glance, it looks like a beautiful beech forest, but in reality, it is truly unique even on a European scale.
The most interesting thing about this forest is that it grows on an old lava flow from the Volcà del Croscat volcano. Thousands of years ago, lava flowed here, which, after solidifying, created a strange, undulating terrain. Today, there are dozens of small mounds of volcanic material called "tossols" among the beech trees, some of which are over 20 meters high.

An experience that makes sense (and tastes great): Stop by and soak up the peaceful atmosphere of the La Fageda farm and dairy. You are currently in a place that is not just an ordinary farm, but a globally unique social project that provides meaningful work to people with disabilities. Sit outside in the shade, take a deep breath, and treat yourself! You can buy their famous, honest yogurts here, or refresh yourself with some absolutely fantastic frozen yogurt – trust us, it’s just what you need after a day at the volcanoes. While you relax in peace in the pleasant outdoor seating area, little travelers can run around and have fun at the local playground.
Practical tip from the spot: Are you here on a weekend, a holiday, or during vacation? Take advantage of it and join a guided tour! Take a peek behind the scenes of production and see for yourself how honest local ingredients are combined with a deep respect for both people and nature.
More information on the official website.

And now the best for last! Descend into the silence of the forest to the natural pools of Gorg de la Plana and Gorg del Duran. You'll also find 2 beautiful waterfalls here. Take off your shoes and let the cool, crystal-clear water wash away all the fatigue from today's hike. Listen to the soothing sound of the cascades, walk barefoot over the smooth stones, and fully feel the contrast between the morning heat of the volcanoes and the evening chill of the forest. This is the perfect moment for total immersion in the Catalan countryside. Will you find the courage to dive fully into the refreshing pool and soak up some fresh energy for the days to come?
The route from the paid parking lot is less than 1 km long and you can find it here. When I visited, it was raining heavily, so the color of the water doesn't reflect what it looks like on a sunny day.

A journey for cloud-high views and a calm, celebratory landing in historic alleyways awaits you. Leave the tourist crowds at the majestic Montserrat monastery below and hop on the steep mountain funicular (Funicular de Sant Joan). It will whisk you high above the rooftops, right into the heart of the quiet rock massif. Once you step out at the top, take a deep breath and enjoy the endless bird's-eye views. From the upper station, follow the breathtaking panoramic trail all the way to the highest peak of the Montserrat mountain range. Walk back down to the monastery along the path. Slow your pace, touch the sun-warmed rocks, soak in the scent of wild mountain herbs pushing through the crevices, and let the powerful energy of this sacred place sink in. Along the way, you can taste the thyme or rosemary that scents the air all around. Evening relaxation in Vic: After returning "home," leave the keys in your room and head out light into the historic streets.
Park a short distance from the Montserrat monastery. Parking is subject to a daily fee (7 euros in 2026).
Before escaping to the peace of the mountain heights, take a moment for the beating heart of this sacred site itself; check out a few of the magnificent viewpoints, stop by the spacious courtyard, and let the centuries-old history of the majestic basilica wash over you. Inside, you can slow down for a moment, admire its breathtaking architecture, or take a close look at the revered statue of the Black Madonna (La Moreneta), the mysterious patron saint of all Catalonia. If you are lucky and arrive at the right time, you might even be surrounded by the angelic singing of the local Escolania boys' choir, whose voices carry through the entire space and will leave a deep impression on you.
And a little tip for the end: Before hopping on the rack railway up, look around at the local farmers' stalls, where you can taste the traditional dessert mel i mató – soft fresh cheese generously drizzled with mountain honey.
Afterward, head towards the station for the steep mountain funicular (Funicular de Sant Joan). It is hidden behind the crowd, and you can reach it by elevator. You can buy tickets on the spot or on the official website here.
After getting off the funicular, head around the building toward Sant Jeroni see route and then back to the Montserrat Monastery. The route is approx. 9 km long with an elevation gain of approx. 350 m. If you have the time and inclination, you can head immediately after getting off the funicular to the Capella de Sant Joan and Ermita de Sant Joan before continuing on to Sant Jeroni.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES
Hiking without the funicular: Route approx. 10.5 km long with an elevation gain of 550 m see map.

A breathtaking panoramic trail will take you all the way to the highest peak of the Montserrat mountain range – Sant Jeroni. The path leads you through quiet nature among magical rock towers. Once you reach the top, take a deep breath and enjoy the feeling of total freedom with a 360-degree view of the entire land deep below you.
The rocks of the Montserrat mountains are stunning not only for their shape but also for their composition. Looking closely, you'll see a myriad of colors from various pebbles. The massif is made of conglomerate, and you can see it best on the worn-out paths where people have polished the stones into beautiful colors 😍

Take one last deep breath and soak in the views. Pay for parking at the machine in the lot before you leave—you can pay with cash or card—and then you’ve got 30 minutes to head out.

It's time to pack up and head for the airport or the coast. It depends on how much time you have before your flight.
If you have some time before your flight, you can head to the coast and take a short walk along the beautiful viewpoints, see here, or just relax on the beach. Feel free to adjust this to fit your schedule.
I've added a paid parking lot near the sea here, or there's free parking about 2 km from the coast here. Otherwise, you can park for free in white zones on the streets, but they tend to fill up quickly.

Before returning the car, don't forget to fill the tank to the top. There's a small gas station right at the airport. Make sure to be at the airport at least 2 hours before your departure. Have a pleasant flight and I hope you enjoyed your vacation :-)
This adventure doesn't end when you unpack your bags! You're bringing home so much more than just a camera roll full of photos—you're carrying the fresh breeze from the Pyrenean peaks, the deep peace of volcanic forests, and the pure joy of discovery.
Whenever you need to recharge your batteries in the daily grind, remember that feeling: bare feet in a cool stream, the perfect taste of honest food on your tongue, and that breathtaking moment standing high above the clouds on Montserrat. Let that vibrant, healthy energy keep working in your everyday life. Because travel has the most meaning when it gets your blood pumping, regenerates your body, and fully awakens your senses.
Have a safe trip and don't forget—the world is most beautiful when you experience it to the fullest!

Start your Catalan adventure at a relaxed pace! After arriving in Barcelona and picking up your car, there's no long, exhausting journey ahead. Your home base is in the city of Vic. This gives you a fantastic opportunity to turn the drive itself into a deep experience and catch your breath after your flight. If you have the time, veer off the main route and make a stop at the magical Pantà de Sau reservoir. Once you arrive at your home for the next few days in the historic town of Vic, take it easy and unpack, because from now on, you can forget about moving your suitcases every day.

NOTES
