Imagine a place where you wake up every day to the sound of rustling palm trees🌴, walk barefoot on white sand 🏖️, and a sea stretches out before you in shades that look more like a postcard than the real world 🌊. That is exactly what the Maldives are like ✨. And the best part is that this tropical paradise doesn't have to be just a dream for newlyweds or luxury resort owners 💙. You just need to know the right spots.
This itinerary will take you to the island of Ukulhas 🏝️ – one of the most beautiful local islands in the Maldives. It will show you what to taste 🍽️, where to go snorkeling 🤿, how to enjoy a vacation full of unforgettable experiences without breaking the bank 💸, and much more. Get ready for a trip that will convince you that the Maldives can be more affordable than you ever thought 🌺.
After landing at Velana International Airport, you'll be greeted by warm tropical air and your first glimpse of the turquoise lagoons💙, a sure sign that your vacation has just begun.🌴 Once you've cleared entry formalities, there's no need to rush. Instead of an expensive transfer to Malé, hop on a bus to the nearby island of Hulhumalé, which is connected to the airport by a bridge and offers convenient and affordable accommodation.
After arrival, follow the signs for Bus 🚌 in front of the Velana airport arrival hall. Board bus line 01, which runs between the airport and Hulhumalé 24/7. The trip takes about 7 minutes.
If you need a SIM card, I recommend eSIM either AIRALO, for which I can offer you a discount code HANA8566, or SAILY, where the discount code is HANABI 7505.
Get off at the Nirolhu Magu 6 stop (one of the last stops on the route) - check if it's close to your accommodation.
The price is approximately 10 MVR (approx. 0.65 USD) per person.
Payment is possible via:
💳 Payment card – just tap your contactless Visa or Mastercard on the reader inside the bus. This is the easiest option for tourists.
💵 Cash – pay the driver (ideally have the exact amount in Maldivian Rufiyaa).
The bus ride 🚌 takes just a few minutes and is the perfect way to relax after a long flight before continuing to Ukulhas Island. In the evening, you can enjoy your first stroll along the long sandy beach, sit in one of the local cafes or restaurants, and soak up the atmosphere of the Maldives before heading off for some quieter island relaxation.
After checking in and a short rest, head out to discover Hulhumalé💙. Although most travelers treat this island just as a layover stop, it's definitely worth a short stroll. Visit Central Park😍, the largest public park on the island, where in the evening you'll meet locals playing sports, families out for a walk, and kids playing on the playgrounds. It's the perfect place to soak up the authentic atmosphere of the Maldives before heading to the quieter island of Ukulhas.
Just a few minutes' walk from the park is a market with a great selection of fruits and vegetables, and I recommend visiting Centro Mall, one of the largest shopping centers on Hulhumalé. You'll find a supermarket, pharmacy, cafes, and several shops where you can stock up on sunscreen, beach gear🤿, snacks, or small souvenirs. If you're hungry after a long flight🍽️, or fancy a good coffee or something sweet, it's an ideal stop before heading back to your accommodation. No maps needed. You definitely won't get lost.

After breakfast, take the bus back to the airport 🚌. If you have booked a speedboat through your accommodation on Ukulhas, you will receive information in advance about the departure time and the location from where the boat leaves ⛵. If not, purchase your speedboat trip yourself. Upon arrival at the airport, get off at the Airport Bus Stop (line 01) and continue on foot (just a few steps) to the jetty where speedboats to individual islands depart from 🚶♀️. The route is short and well-marked. Once there, you just need to find your carrier by the company name or ask the local staff at the port 😊. I recommend arriving at least 20–30 minutes before the boat departure ⏰. You will have time to find the right pier, store your luggage, and calmly enjoy your first cruise on the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean towards Ukulhas 🌊✨.
💊 If you suffer from seasickness, I recommend taking anti-nausea medication before your speedboat trip. 🌊 The ride can get pretty bumpy, especially when the waves are high, and these meds will help you have a much more comfortable trip without feeling unwell.
Ukulhas is a small local island in the Maldives, where stunning white beaches, a crystal-clear ocean teeming with life, and the authentic atmosphere of local island life come together.🌺
As soon as you step off the boat onto the white sand of Ukulhas, your Maldivian fairy tale begins. Locals from your accommodation will be waiting for you at the harbor, help you with your luggage, and guide you through your first steps on the island to your room. From this moment on, you can slow down, breathe in the salty air, and let yourself be carried away by the atmosphere of a tropical paradise.🌴
🌴 Head into the local streets and get to know Ukulhas as it really is. Take a walk past the school, stop by the soccer field, and watch the daily life of the local inhabitants. It is here that you will discover the authentic face of the Maldives, far from the luxury resorts.
👕 While walking around the island, however, it is important to respect local customs. Ukulhas is an inhabited Muslim island, so both men and women should keep their shoulders and knees covered (nothing see-through) outside of the tourist beach. Swimwear, bikinis, or bare chests are only allowed on the designated Bikini Beach. By following these simple rules, you show respect 💙 for the local culture and contribute to a pleasant atmosphere between visitors and island residents. 🤍

🪸 Today is all about the best that Ukulhas has to offer. In the morning, head out on a trip to see manta rays, which are among the most stunning inhabitants of the Indian Ocean. Seeing these elegant giants gliding gracefully through the crystal-clear water is an experience you won't soon forget. 🤿
🏖️ After returning, treat yourself to a well-deserved rest on Bikini Beach. Get cozy under the palm trees, cool off in the turquoise lagoon, or enjoy a coconut or smoothie at one of the beach bars. Time flows slower here, and there's no need to rush.
🦈 Towards evening, head over to Shark View Point, where reef sharks gather every day for their regular feeding. Watching them from the pier just a few meters away is a fascinating sight and one of the unforgettable experiences of Ukulhas.
🏝️ Before you set out to explore the island, stop by Baraboa Excursions & Store. This is exactly where most Maldivian dreams come true. 🐢 Choose to snorkel with sea turtles and manta rays, 🤿 explore colorful coral reefs, 🐬 go on a dolphin trip, or 🌅 try boat fishing. You can also treat yourself to a day at a resort or go snorkeling with whale sharks. The helpful local team will be happy to advise you on which activities to choose based on the weather and current sea conditions. There is also a small shop 🛍️ with souvenirs or items like long-sleeved swimwear, which you'll definitely find useful in the Maldives.
🌴 Then, set off to discover the island and its peaceful atmosphere. At the end of the day, enjoy dinner at one of the local restaurants 🍽️ and soak in the magical sunset over the Indian Ocean. 🌅✨
⛵ All trips on Ukulhas start at the local ferry terminal. I recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure so you have enough time to check in, stow your belongings on the boat, and get a short briefing from the crew. The staff from each agency will usually recognize you easily from their reservation list and guide you to the right boat. 🌊
🤿 Manta Ray snorkeling is one of the most unique experiences you can have in the Maldives. After a short boat ride, you'll reach a spot where mantas regularly appear. Once the crew spots their characteristic silhouettes, you'll put on your snorkeling gear and quietly slip into the water.
🪸 A meeting with a manta ray is a moment you won't forget. These elegant sea giants with wingspans of several meters glide gracefully under the surface and often swim curiously just a few meters from snorkelers. Although they appear majestic, they are completely harmless and feed only on plankton.
💙 To protect the mantas, it is important to follow the guides' instructions – do not touch the animals, do not chase them, and give them plenty of space. Your reward will be one of the most beautiful experiences you'll take home from the Maldives.

🍽️ Ostrov Beach Restaurant💙 is a place where, besides great food, you can also enjoy the unique atmosphere of a tropical island. Treat yourself to fresh fish, fragrant Maldivian specialties, or seafood and let yourself be carried away by the peaceful pace of life just a few steps from the ocean. As evening falls, the restaurant takes on a magical charm, becoming the perfect spot for a romantic dinner under the palm trees. 🌴✨
🏖️ Bikini Beach is the main beach on Ukulhas, where tourists can enjoy the sun and swim in their swimwear. Soft white sand, a clear turquoise lagoon, and the shade of coconut palms create the perfect backdrop for relaxation. Thanks to the gradual entry into the sea, it is perfect not only for swimming but also for snorkeling right from the shore. There are sun loungers, swings, and iconic photo spots that make this beach one of the most beautiful places on the island. 🌴🌊✨
🍹 Near Bikini Beach, you will find several pleasant beach bars and restaurants where you can treat yourself to a fresh coconut, a tropical smoothie, great coffee, or a light lunch with an ocean view. Even though you are on a local island where alcohol is not served, you certainly won't miss out on a chilled-out atmosphere. Sitting just a few steps from the sea is the perfect place to relax between swimming and snorkeling. 🌴🌊
Sun loungers are free of charge.
🌴 COCO Bar is a cozy beach bar with an unmistakable boho/hippie vibe, where relaxation, the scent of the ocean, and tropical peace rule. 🍹 Stop by for a refreshing drink or a fresh coconut, sit in the shade of the palm trees, and forget about time for a while. This is the perfect place to understand why they say in the Maldives that the most beautiful moments are the ones where you don't have to do a thing. 💙🌊
🦈 Stop by Shark View Point before sunset, where reef sharks gather every evening for their regular feeding. It’s a unique chance to watch these fascinating creatures up close and experience one of the most exciting moments Ukulhas has to offer. 🌅✨
Don't miss out on a Maldivian sunset 🌅 Sunset Photoshoot Point is one of the best spots on Ukulhas for watching the sunset. Every evening, the sky turns shades of orange, pink, and gold, reflecting off the calm ocean surface. It's the perfect place for a romantic walk, a moment of relaxation, or capturing unforgettable photos to remember the magic of Maldivian evenings. 📸✨
OCULA BAR has a unique boho/hippie style that you'll fall in love with at first sight. Wooden seating, natural decorations, the rustling of palm trees, and a view of the turquoise ocean create a relaxed atmosphere perfect for unwinding. 🥥 Treat yourself to a fresh coconut, homemade lemonade, or a smoothie, and let yourself drift away with the slow rhythm of Maldivian life. 🌴✨

🐢 Head out right after sunrise to Sunrise Beach💙, home to the popular snorkeling spot, Turtle Reef. The early morning hours offer the calmest sea, the best visibility, and the greatest chance to spot sea turtles in their natural habitat. 🤿 Besides turtles, you'll find colorful corals, schools of tropical fish, and crystal-clear water waiting for you beneath the surface. Depending on your flight time, head over to Velana International Airport (MLE) to begin your journey home. 💙 You're taking away more than just photos of stunning beaches and the turquoise ocean; you're taking memories of experiences that will last a lifetime—from encounters with turtles and manta rays to magical sunsets. 🌅🏝️
Don't forget to be at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight. Have a safe trip home.
Every journey must come to an end, but the memories of the Maldives will stay with you for a long time. 💙 The turquoise ocean, white beaches, encounters with sea turtles and manta rays, and magical sunsets create moments you'll love looking back on.
I hope this itinerary makes your planning easier and shows you that the Maldives doesn't have to be just a dream, but a destination you can experience on a reasonable budget. 🌴 When you look back on this trip one day, you might find that the most beautiful souvenir isn't the photos, but the feeling of peace, freedom, and joy that you take home with you. 💙✨
Wishing you a safe journey and unforgettable experiences in the Maldivian paradise. 🏝️

Today is all about the sea, adventure, and the flavors of the Maldives. Head out for some traditional open-ocean fishing, where you'll try your hand at line fishing just like the local fishermen. 🎣 Patience, calm waters, and a bit of luck might just land you a catch that can turn into an unforgettable dinner later on. 🐟 You can have your catch prepared at the restaurant for a small fee.🌅🍽️
Don't forget to pack your mask, fins, and a GoPro or underwater camera – this is the perfect spot to capture some of your most beautiful memories from the Maldives. 🌊📸✨
SEA SALT 🍽️ Sea Salt Restaurant is one of the most popular restaurants on Ukulhas and is a great choice for a nice lunch or a romantic dinner in a peaceful setting. It specializes mainly in fresh fish, seafood, and traditional Maldivian cuisine, but also offers international dishes and vegetarian options. 🌴🐟

This trip takes place in the evening.

✨ Bioluminescent plankton is one of the most magical natural phenomena you can experience in the Maldives. On dark nights, these tiny organisms in the water glow with a soft blue light with every movement, as if thousands of stars were shimmering beneath the surface. 🌌
🌊 This phenomenon only appears under the right conditions, so it cannot be guaranteed every evening. However, if you are lucky, you are in for an unforgettable sight that will add a truly fairytale atmosphere to your vacation. 💙✨

Over a hundred thousand residents live in a small area, the streets are full of motorbikes, shops, and locals, and the city pulses with life from morning till night. After days spent on quiet Ukulhas, you'll be surprised by the stark contrast the capital of the Maldives offers. 🌴✨
🏙️ Although Malé is small in size, it offers several interesting places worth visiting. Stroll through the busy streets, visit the Fish Market, where you can watch the daily trade of fresh catches, or stop by the Local Market for tropical fruit, spices, and souvenirs. 🐟🥭

🚤 After saying goodbye to the island, take a speedboat back to Malé. 🌆 Enjoy your final evening with a stroll through the capital of the Maldives and wrap up your trip with dinner at one of the local restaurants. 🍽️✨
Take a taxi, which is available everywhere, to get to Malé island👉
🏙️ Malé is the complete opposite of the peaceful islands.
🕌 The Old Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskiy), one of the oldest mosques in the Maldives, is also worth seeing
A lovely green oasis in the middle of the city⭐where you can take a break from the urban hustle and bustle. End your day with dinner at one of the local restaurants and soak up the atmosphere of the capital, which is completely different from the peaceful islands. 🍽️
