Thanks to the short distances, it’s an ideal destination for an extended weekend, during which you'll discover a surprising amount.
Over four days, you will visit vibrant Skopje, head to the picturesque Matka Canyon, discover historic Ohrid—a UNESCO World Heritage site—visit the Monastery of Saint Naum, and drive along one of the most beautiful panoramic roads in the country through Galičica National Park. The entire itinerary is designed as a comfortable road trip with a rental car, giving you maximum freedom and allowing you to see much more than you would using public transport.

After arriving in North Macedonia, pick up your rental car and head to the center of Skopje. You can look forward to a pleasant walk through the historical and modern city center, where you'll visit the main square, the iconic Stone Bridge, the oriental Old Bazaar, and the Kale Fortress with its beautiful view of the city. Your journey begins at Skopje International Airport. After collecting your luggage, pick up your reserved car (following the instructions received before departure) and head into the city center.
The Old Bazaar is one of the largest and best-preserved Ottoman markets in the Balkans. Narrow stone alleys hide traditional shops, cafes, mosques, and restaurants serving local cuisine. The atmosphere in this district is completely different from the modern city center and is definitely worth a longer stop.

On the edge of the Old Bazaar stands one of the most beautiful 15th-century mosques in North Macedonia. Thanks to its location, it also offers a nice view of the historical part of the city.
The historic Kale Fortress towers over the Old Bazaar, offering one of the best views of all of Skopje. Although mostly just the walls remain of the original fortress, the site is definitely worth a visit.
Macedonia Square is the main square of Skopje and the heart of the entire city. Its landmark is the monumental statue of Alexander the Great, surrounded by fountains, representative buildings, and dozens of other statues. Most city tours start right from here.

Not many people know that Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mother Teresa was born right here in Skopje. This modern memorial highlights her life, humanitarian work, and the childhood she spent in this city.
If you have some time left, drive to the Middle Vodno cable car station. From there, a cable car will take you in just a few minutes to the monumental Millennium Cross, one of the largest crosses in the world. The top offers a stunning panoramic view of the entire city of Skopje.

We recommend ending your evening in the Old Bazaar, where you can get a great meal, or on the promenade along the Vardar River. If you want to enjoy the view of Skopje at night, head to the rooftop terrace of Hotel Arka, from where you'll have the whole city in the palm of your hand.
Today, a trip to one of the most beautiful natural spots in North Macedonia awaits you. Just half an hour from the center of Skopje lies Matka Canyon, where you can take a boat trip to Vrelo Cave, go kayaking, or head out on a short hike along the turquoise Treska River. Since you have a car at your disposal the whole time, you can set your own pace for the day and enjoy this place without any rush.
Matka Canyon is one of the most visited natural sites in North Macedonia. The turquoise Treska River cuts through steep limestone cliffs here, creating a stunning landscape best enjoyed from the water or while walking along the shore.
On-site, you'll find several restaurants with terraces overlooking the river, a boat dock, and options for active recreation.

Boat trip to Vrelo Cave
The most popular experience in the canyon is a boat trip to Vrelo Cave. During the trip, you'll pass steep rock walls and picturesque monasteries hidden in the canyon slopes. Vrelo Cave is known for its stalactite formations and a deep underground lake that remains partially unexplored to this day.

Walking along the canyon
An easy trail leads along the river, offering beautiful views of the surrounding nature. Along the way, you'll pass several historical monasteries and a number of photogenic spots where it's worth stopping for a moment.

Swimming in the canyon (in summer)
In the summer months, the clear water invites you to swim. However, the water is quite cold even in summer because it is fed by mountain springs. If you want to cool off after a walk, be sure to pack your swimsuit.
After a relaxing day in nature, head back to Skopje. In the evening, you can check out any spots you missed on the first day or grab dinner at one of the traditional restaurants in the Old Bazaar.
On your last day, you'll travel across North Macedonia. Along the way, you'll stop in Tetovo to visit one of the most beautiful mosques in the Balkans. Then, you'll arrive in Ohrid, whose historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site. In the afternoon, you'll take a scenic route through Pelister National Park and the city of Bitola back toward Skopje.
The first stop of the day is the city of Tetovo, known primarily for its Painted Mosque (Šarena Džamija). It ranks among the most beautiful Ottoman buildings in the Balkans and, unlike most mosques, is decorated with colorful floral motifs, landscapes, and ornaments.
A car trip from Skopje to Ohrid costs approximately 2.00 to 2.50 euros (or about 120 to 150 MKD) one way for a standard passenger car. There are several toll stations with barriers along the A2 highway corridor, where you pay small amounts in cash or by card at each station.
Ohrid is one of the most beautiful cities in North Macedonia and, together with Lake Ohrid, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The historic center is full of narrow stone streets, ancient churches, viewpoints, and cozy cafes overlooking the lake.

Approximately 30 kilometers south of Ohrid, just a few minutes from the Albanian border, lies one of the most significant Orthodox monasteries in North Macedonia. The Monastery of Saint Naum was founded at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries and remains one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the country to this day.
Beyond the monastery itself, you will be enchanted by its stunning location on the shores of Lake Ohrid, the manicured gardens with free-roaming peacocks, and the views of the lake's crystal-clear water.
Just a few steps from the monastery are the springs of the Black Drin river, which you can discover during a short rowboat ride or a pleasant stroll along the wooden walkways. The crystal-clear water and surrounding nature are among the most beautiful spots in the entire region.
There is a paid parking lot available near the site, cash only (100 MKD, or 1.50-2.00 euros).
For your return journey, we recommend taking the panoramic route through Galičica National Park, which separates Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. The road winds through mountain landscapes and offers some of the most stunning views in all of North Macedonia. In clear weather, you can see both lakes at the same time from several viewpoints.
If you have more time, feel free to make a quick stop at one of the lookouts or head out on a short hike.

At the foot of the Baba mountains lies North Macedonia's second-largest city – Bitola. If you have some time left, take a stroll down the Širok Sokak pedestrian street, lined with cafés and historic Ottoman-era buildings.
