The adventure awaits
We have another trip to Iceland coming up, an island that is rough on life. In winter there is little light, in summer too much. It's called the Land of Fire and Ice. It is also the land of wind and weather that changes several times a day, the land of a million natural beauties. Nature here is breathtaking, still pristine. Glaciers, waterfalls, beaches, mountains, hot pools - it's all Iceland. This term, if we are lucky, we will also see the Northern Lights. We'll let the beauty of this island guide us and see what it shows us this time. We really enjoyed last year's excursion at this time 😉
We will still have plenty of light to go over the itinerary. The sun will be rising around 10am and setting around 5:15pm.
The excursion includes:
- Transportation from Prague to the airport and back (tickets with hand luggage included)
- car rental in Iceland, driver, Czech speaking guide
- all admissions and parking fees unless specifically stated otherwise
- accommodation in cabins or apartments where it will be just us, mostly with hot pool
- half board (breakfast and dinner, or grocery shopping), we always agree on what we would like to have, and cook together in the morning and evening (I am the head chef)

We should land in Iceland at 20:00. We'll pick up the car at the airport, but that's not the end of the day.
We have to stop in Reykjavik on the way to our accommodation to shop for dinner and breakfast, you shop for snacks. Shops in Iceland close early and open late, here is the only 24-hour shop.
For the first few nights I chose this accommodation, mainly because it is one of the few with a hot pool inside, which will be really useful in this weather. Of course there are 4 bedrooms, all with twin beds.
Today we will leave early at 7:30 and the first stop today is the largest glacier in Europe, and not only that, we will get right to the glacier, to a glacial lake full of bushes and to a beach that is known as the diamond beach, just because of the washed up crabs. There are also seals here and there.
Fjallsárlón is one of the lakes just at the foot of Iceland's largest glacier, Vatnajökull. Unlike the nearby larger and more famous Jökullsárlón - Glacier Lagoon, the lake is smaller, making it closer to the huge glacier just a few hundred metres away on the other side. We will try this approach, if it doesn't work because of the snow we will of course choose another one, in this case there is always a passable one.

Today we will also leave early at 7:30 and the first stop today is the iconic mountain of Iceland, which we definitely must not miss.
Small but very nice waterfall.
The amazing black beach of Iceland. This is definitely the most famous. But beware, the sea here is rough and very dangerous. Several times a year, tourists drown here. So never, ever turn your back on the sea, even when it seems calm. The waves come very quickly. I personally have fished for a shoe here, and there is not a group where someone hasn't taken a dip :) Fortunately, no one has drowned so far :)
One of the most impressive waterfalls is Skógafoss. Due to its location, a beautiful phenomenon often occurs here in sunny weather - a rainbow appears. It's a beautiful spectacle.
You can walk directly behind the main waterfall, which will be closed at this time of year due to ice, but despite this the waterfall is beautiful. There is another one a short distance away that flows straight into the rock.
Today, we'll make our contribution, we'll leave at 9:00. Craters and volcanoes are also popular places in Iceland. We're going to one of them. It's been inactive for years, but it's a beautiful colourful one.
This waterfall is on the golden circle where the most beautiful of Iceland should be, I'm deliberately keeping it at the top because I personally don't think it's the most beautiful. You will find that every natural gift in this country is the most beautiful thing you have seen.
Geysir is the great-grandfather of all geysers in the world. This one was the first to be discovered. It is not very active today, but there is another one not far from it that is very active and erupts to a good height at regular intervals.
This is the bluest waterfall in Iceland. It's 3 kilometres along the river straight to it. We will walk on stones, we will walk on brush, the path is not very comfortable, but it is not particularly physically demanding, and everyone can walk it. Hopefully we won't get rained on, so it won't be muddy either, that really sucks, but it's definitely worth it. If the weather conditions are extremely bad, we won't go on the trek and will choose another option. The trip would become too risky.
Hraunfossar is a lava waterfall where water from the Langjökull glacier flows under the Hallmundarhraun lava field for almost 900 metres into the Hvítá River. Hopefully the road will be passable.
This time I chose this guesthouse for us, I booked it privately, which means that no one else will be here except us. So we have 4 double bedrooms, of course there is also a hot pool, this time outside.
The older and, unlike its famous brother, almost unknown wreck of the former army aircraft R4D-6 has been resting here, at its original crash site, for more than 50 years.
One of the attractions of the full mainland north of Iceland is Arctic Henge - Heimskautsgerðið to celebrate the Sun. I understand there is a shortage of it in Iceland, when it is there it should be celebrated.
Today, we're going to a paid spa. Here is the same blue and healing water as the famous and horribly overpriced Blue Lagoon Spa. They are not as popular, which is true for the whole of the north of Iceland, so I hope we will enjoy the relaxation.
In the morning we will go to one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland around 8 o'clock. When the sun is shining, it's a breathtaking sight.

I chose my favorite house in this location for us. With a hot pool, of course. It contains 4 bedrooms, one with a double bed. One has two twin beds. Another has a smaller double bed and a single bed. The last bedroom has 2 twin beds and a bunk bed. Don't worry, no one will be sleeping upstairs, there is plenty of room.
We'll get some real sleep today before the challenging flight back, and a 10am start at a typical black Icelandic church will be a bit of a change from the deluge of waterfalls.
The next destination will be an iconic mountain known from a TV series with breathtaking waterfalls.
