How about watching the sunrise (or sunset) from one of the mountain peaks, shrines, or mysterious temples that this country overflows with, many of which are located right in the middle of a bustling and modern metropolis with futuristic and neon-lit skyscrapers. In these temples, time seems to stop, and even the usually rushing inhabitants of the pulsating metropolises slow down and enjoy their prayer.
Climb one of the most active volcanoes and look into its crater. And how to regenerate a body tired from the climb? Of course, in the local baths - onsen.
Follow the traces of sad history in Hiroshima, so that the very next day you can board a ferry towards the sacred island, where you will be welcomed from afar by a partially submerged sacred torii gate during high tide.

And it's here! It's over!! Your Japanese adventure is about to begin. Due to the long, arduous flight and the time delay, you will probably not be allowed to do much action once you arrive and then get to your accommodation. Those interested can explore the area around the accommodation and soak up the first feel of the country, while fortifying themselves with some of the local delicacies - there are plenty of restaurants and bistros all around. You can make your selection before entering the restaurant thanks to the plastic food displays in the windows, including their prices.
You will usually be given an Immigration and Customs questionnaire by the cabin crew on the plane, where you will answer a few questions about the goods you are carrying, your place of residence in Japan, past visits, etc.
A common formality that you don't have to worry about. If you don't get it or fill it out on the plane, it is also available at the airport before immigration.
The immigration officer will take your biometric data (fingerprints and a digital photo of your face) during the passport and questionnaire check and may ask you a few questions at that time. Have your approximate itinerary, return ticket and confirmed accommodation for the first nights (but you probably won't need it) handy for this. Unless you are an internationally wanted criminal, you will probably be allowed into the country :)
After passing through immigration control and collecting your luggage, go through the arrival hall and follow the clear signs to the monorail station, which will take you to the train and subway transfer station in the city center - Hamamatsucho, where you will transfer to the Yamanote line (The loop), which circles around the center of Tokyo.

TIP: there is also a cheaper (but less comfortable and experiential) transport option from the airport for 535 JPY. From the airport, do not use the monorail, but the slower Keikyu trains and get off at Shinagawa, where you transfer to the R Joban Line Ueno Tokyo Line Rapid.

Your journey through Tokyo and all of Japan begins with a return to the past in the Old Quarter, where you'll soak up the atmosphere of old Tokyo in local alleys with shops and pubs, with the first opportunity to buy traditional souvenirs. You'll visit the huge and very popular with the locals city park with a lake covered in beautiful lotuses, sakura trees in bloom in spring and a zoo, a shrine and several museums. Then it's time to explore the "underground city" or Tokyo's famous subway, where you'll see first-hand the efficiency and discipline of the locals for which this country is renowned. You will see the scene of the local national sport and martial art, sumo. In the evening, you can watch Japanese debauchery in the "crazy" district full of neon, anime and manga, and maybe even dress up in one of the costumes or play the popular game of pachinko. And because you'll get hungry after a day like that, sample some of the local delicacies at one of the many local establishments.
If you want to experience the atmosphere of old Tokyo, visit the Yanaka district, which is not far from your accommodation and where time has kind of stopped. Compared to the modern parts of the constantly vibrant city, here you will find quiet streets with shops and restaurants, typical houses from the old era. The main shopping street is Yanaka Ginza, where you can buy tasteful souvenirs (e.g. fans, chopsticks with traditional motifs, etc.) at decent prices.
Take the road further to Ueno Park via the extensive Yanaka Cemetery via Sakura street (the name probably doesn't need to be explained, it's an experience especially in the spring during the "cherry blossom" or sakura bloom) and stop at Tennoji Temple (if you miss it, it doesn't matter, it's one of the many temples you can visit during your trip :))
Probably the most popular (and certainly the most extensive) city park for locals and tourists alike. A system of landscaped paths leading directly through the "lake surface" of Shinobazu pond invites you to stroll past the blooming lotus trees and, in spring, the much-loved sakura (the sakura blossom viewing festival = hanami). Be sure to stop by one of the temples, such as Shinobazu-no-ike Benten-dō, located right on the pond's island (daily 7am-5pm, free admission), or Kaneiji Temple at the northern end of the park (daily 9am-5pm, free admission), but you can also visit the Ueno Zoo with its pandas, or one of the museums, such as the National Museum in Tokyo.

The Tokyo metro is very extensive and operated by 2 companies - Tokyo metro (9 lines) and Toei (4 lines). It is also connected to the наземни градски влакове, the basis of which is the already mentioned circular line in the center, the so-called Yamanote line.
The stops are well marked and the stations are clean and clear (the designation of lines with a letter and color and the numbering of stops helps), all in English. In each stop you will find clean toilets, often with heated toilet seats, a controller for the intensity levels of the water jet for rinsing, etc. :). There is free WIFI on the platforms and trains.
separate ticket - you buy it from vending machines in front of the platform, the price varies depending on the zones traveled, usually between 180 - 210 yen per journey for normal shorter transfers between sights. Children 6-11 always pay half fare, children under 6 travel for free.
!!ATTENTION!! Even though it will be a surprise for many (given the technical sophistication of the country), you usually won't get far with a foreign payment card in vending machines. So always have cash with you.

welcome SUICA rechargeable card - a convenient way to travel not only in the Tokyo metro. It is a pre-paid card where you upload credit and then simply place it on the turnstile ("beep") when boarding and alighting. So you don't have to deal with buying tickets at the vending machine and waiting in frequent queues before each journey. You can buy the card at major stops (including here in Ueonokoen) and it is free for tourists (without deposit), valid for 28 days. You can buy the card at vending machines or at the information kiosk at the station, again prepare cash (including each top-up). You charge the amount and then when boarding at the turnstile, place the card on the reader. You do the same when you get off and the credit deducted will be displayed on the display. Fares with this card are not discounted in any way, but it is convenient, so I recommend it. You can then top up at all metro stops at vending machines.

Your first journey (depending on the time of day, more or less) on Tokyo's crowded subway will take you to the historic Asakusa district, where you'll get a taste of the old days. The highlights of a visit to Asakusa are definitely Sensoji Temple and Nakamise shopping mall. To get around this district, your own feet will suffice, however, you can use a traditional rickshaw (approx. 9,000 yen for 30 min).
The Buddhist temple is the oldest and one of the most visited and colourful in Tokyo. It is a complex of several temple buildings and pagodas, to which a path leads through the famous gate and one of the main symbols of Tokyo - Kaminarimon. After that, you go through a shopping street followed by the Hozomon Gate. Through this you enter the area where the main temple building stands along with the "five storied" pagoda. A little further behind the main building is the Asakusa shrine. It is an interesting experience (not only in this temple) to observe the locals in prayer, which consists of several cheers, bows and coin tosses. However, in order to maintain respect for the local culture, do not film or photograph this ritual.

A shopping avenue stretching from the Kaminarimon Gate to the main temple. On the sides you will find shops selling local culinary specialties and traditional items. A good opportunity for souvenir shopping.
!!!TIP!! If you don't have enough shopping, you can turn off onto the perpendicular Shin-Nakamise (new Nakamise) Street, which is a covered shopping avenue full of other shops and restaurants. Here, or in the side streets, you may find slightly better prices.
From the Asakusa district, continue east and after a short walk you will reach the Sumida district on the bank of the river of the same name.
A district named after the river of the same name. You can take walks or bike rides along the river, and there are also boat ferries. As the name suggests, this district is the main venue for the fat man fights popular among the locals :)
If you cross the Kototoi Bridge over the Sumida River, you can climb (or be taken up) to the tallest building in Tokyo and all of Japan and one of the landmarks of the city visible from afar - the Skytree. This 634 metre high tower serves as a TV transmitter and, of course, as a lookout point. You can take the elevator up to one of the two observation platforms and enjoy a spectacular view of the city (with good visibility, you can also catch a glimpse of the mythical Fuji volcano, but this is rather rare).

Ryogoku has been a sumo district since ancient times - you'll find the main arena where the biggest competitions are held, the stables where the wrestlers live and train, and a sumo museum and restaurant themed around the theme.
Kokugikan is one of the main venues for wrestling. The arena can hold up to 10,000 spectators and hosts 3 of the 6 main tournaments (in January, May and September).
Some restaurants in the area (often run by former wrestlers) offer the traditional wrestling dish, Chanko nabe. It is a pot with vegetables, seafood and meat and is served in different variations.

A very lively neighbourhood full of glowing neon signs, advertisements, restaurants and the centre of Japan's much-loved anime and manga comics. Walking down Chuo dori Street, which is the centre of the action, you will literally find one of these products in every shop window, or an electronics store, as well as plenty of gambling halls where you can try your hand at the popular game of pachinko (a combination of painball and slot machine) or other games of chance. You'll be surrounded by fanatical locals trying their luck, for whom these games are a great weakness in an otherwise disciplined nation. You can also purchase a superhero figure and dress up in an anime costume with the locals and wander around this vibrant neighbourhood. How about something good? There are countless restaurants of various categories to choose from. For better prices and more peace of mind, turn into one of the surrounding alleyways and have some delicious sashimi, for example.

Today, you'll find vibrant neighbourhoods that will give you a full showcase of the bustling life here. You'll see the world's busiest intersection and see for yourself a scene you may know from movies or videos that so beautifully illustrates the hustle and bustle of the city. Interspersed with the colourful, luminous and ever-beating parts is a magnificent temple with a beautiful gateway and peace of mind is gained in the beautifully landscaped park.

One of the busiest centres of the Tokyo metropolitan area. If you want to see the typical busy and bustling streets of this megalopolis full of restaurants and bars, trendy shops and shopping malls, this is the place for you. You can refresh yourself with one of the many types of bubble tea that are so popular in East Asia. You'll also find one of Tokyo's most photographed spots...
...and this is the famous Shibuya crossing from photographs and even many movies - a busy intersection where at one moment the traffic lights come on and pedestrians pile into the intersection from all sides like ants (in the rainy season, all with umbrellas, but still no accidents :)). You can participate directly in this "chaos" by crossing the intersection in one of the many directions, or even better, you can watch this "anthill" from above - from the adjacent shopping centre right next to Shibuya station. When exiting the station, use the Hatchiko exit, named after the statue of a dog standing in the space in front of the building.
!!WARNING!! The area around Shibuya Station has been undergoing extensive renovation for several years, and some entrances to the station and adjacent department stores are therefore closed.

A beautiful shrine located in the vast wooded Yoyogi Park with a beautiful torii entrance gate so typical of these Shinto temples. Along the way, you can admire the beautifully decorated sake containers that are regularly donated to the temple by the factories that produce this national alcoholic beverage (which of course you must also taste, and you will have many opportunities to do so).

One of Tokyo's largest and most popular parks. This sprawling piece of green on the map is an oasis of calm between two bustling districts - Shibuya and Shinjuku. Its vast, beautifully landscaped lawns and winding streets provide plenty of space and tranquility for the otherwise hectic and cramped city centre. It includes traditional Japanese, French and English gardens, among others. There is also a greenhouse with tropical plants. Like any park in Japan, it is best visited during the sakura bloom season - it is one of the most popular places to see them.

Another of today's pair of "busy" business districts with skyscrapers, shops, restaurants and the incessant bustle of the big city. The local station is also one of the busiest in the world by passenger volume.
The government building, which is otherwise unremarkable, offers the opportunity to take the escalator to the 45th floor of both towers for free and enjoy the view of the city.
"Tokyo red light district" - a district that never sleeps and is never dark, offering glowing advertisements, shops, cinemas, restaurants where you can be served by robots...in short, plenty of shopping or gastronomic options. A little further on is the "decadent" Golden gai district with its narrow streets full of bohemian pubs, cafes and art shops.

The main temple of the Nikko area dating back to the 8th century when Buddhism was brought to the area. The main temple building, Sanbutsudo, is famous for its gold-lacquered wooden statues of the mountain gods. Opposite the main building is a treasury with various artefacts, which is surrounded by a Japanese garden. Combined admission can be purchased.

The garden adjacent to the Rinnoji Temple Treasury is a popular place to walk and relax, especially in the autumn months when the leaves of the local maple trees are beautifully coloured. It also includes a centrally located pond.
This shrine serves as a memorial to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, who ruled Japan for more than 250 years until 1868. The richly decorated shrine complex consists of more than a dozen buildings set in a beautiful forest. The decorations are dominated by wood carvings complemented by elements of gold leaf. The shrine mixes elements of Shintoism with Buddhism. The main parts of the shrine include a 5-story pagoda (the interior is not open to the public), several lavish warehouses behind the entrance gate, the Yomeimon Gate, and the Honjido Hall, which features the "Weeping Dragon" - a large painting of a dragon on the ceiling. The complex also includes a museum.

The shrine standing adjacent to Toshogu shrine is older than its larger neighbour. It is dedicated to the deities of the three most sacred mountains of Nikko: Mount Nantai, Mount Nyoho and Mount Taro. The shrine also includes the Shinkyo Bridge, about 1 km away, which will be the last destination of the day. The other two Futarasan shrines are located higher up in the mountains in nearby Okunikko: one stands at the top of Mount Nantai and the other on the north shore of Lake Chuzenji at the foot of the mountain (your destinations tomorrow). The trail to Mount Nantai begins on its grounds. Entrance to the sanctuary is largely free.

This is the mausoleum of the third Tokugawa shogun Iemicu, which visually resembles the Toshogu Shrine, but is built in a more modest style. Here, too, you will find a combination of Shinto and Buddhist symbols.

If you don't feel like walking, you can take the same bus from the main road that you took from the train station. The fare is covered by your pass. However, if the bus isn't running, it doesn't make sense to wait for it for such a short distance.
Built in traditional Edo-era style, the 106-room building is one of the largest wooden buildings in the country. It served as the summer residence of the imperial family for a long time, but fell into disrepair after World War II. In 2000, it was renovated and opened to the public.

The garden, which is managed by the University of Tokyo, is used for research on alpine plants and contains many tree species from all over the country. It is a pleasant place for walks supplemented by learning about the marked trees and herbs. The garden also offers a view of the Kanmangafuchi Abyss.

The name of the bridge means "Sacred", it belongs to the Futarasan Shrine and symbolically forms a kind of entrance to the shrines and temples of the Nikko area. It is rated as one of the 3 most beautiful bridges in Japan.

The previous day you enjoyed the cultural beauties, but Nikkō is particularly unique because the temples and shrines here are set in a beautiful natural mountain landscape. So today it's time to explore this wilder side of the region. Your starting point is the beautiful mountain lake of Chuzenji. Stroll along its shores and take in the views of its blue surface and the surrounding forested hills. Enjoy a spiritual moment at the sanctuary situated on the shores of the lake at the foot of the sacred mountain, from where the fitter and braver among you can begin the climb to the summit. After a challenging hike comes the reward of breathtaking views of the surrounding nature and temples. Don't forget to visit the most famous waterfall here and enjoy the roar of the falling water masses.

A bus takes you along a serpentine mountain road to the cable car station, which takes you to a viewing platform with beautiful views of Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Waterfall within a 3-minute ride. At the lower cable car station and car park you can buy refreshments or souvenirs.
!!ATTENTION!! buses between Tobu Nikko station and Chozenju onsen station have different routes for going THERE and BACK. Therefore, if you want to visit this place, you need to do so only when travelling from Tobu Nikko to Chozenju onsen, i.e. at the beginning of the day.

The main centre of the area, the mountain village of Chusenji onsen, is an ideal starting point for all the attractions in the area and also a junction for buses that take you to more or less distant places.
One of the many waterfalls in this area is definitely the most famous and most visited, as it is both one of the highest (almost 100 m) and the most accessible. You can admire its beauty for free from the lookout above the falls, or take the paid elevator down to the lower platform at the base of the falls.

A museum mapping the history and ecology of this natural area. In addition to the usual exhibitions, there is also a large projection that shows you the beauty of this area during the different seasons.

Visiting the Nikko area can be seen as conquering the Futarasan shrines. The first (and main, largest) of the shrines bearing this name is located in the city, and you probably visited it yesterday. Now you are at the 2nd shrine of this trio, which, with its location on the shore of the lake and at the foot of the sacred Mount Nantai, where you are heading, serves not only as a place for mental regeneration, but also as a starting point for a challenging trek to the summit of the mountain. So pray to the local gods for a smooth ascent, have a snack and rest before the ascent, and when you are ready to conquer 1200 meters of altitude, set off!!

At the top of this sacred mountain, after a challenging climb, you will be treated to the last of the trio of Futarasan shrines, besides amazing views of the wide surroundings. Although it is a modest shrine (especially compared to the main shrine in town), given the challenging path to reach it and its location right on top of the mountain, you will probably be enchanted by it and appreciate your visit the most of all the local shrines and temples :).
You return the same way. This time, of course, you're going downhill, so the journey will definitely be faster and less demanding. Be careful not to rush too much – the terrain is challenging and rushing can easily lead to a mistake that could cost you the rest of your vacation.

Today will be a very variable day and it is up to you how you spend it. For those of you who got your fill of climbing Mount Nantai yesterday and are now looking to recover, a scenic cruise on the lake, a tour of the waterfall, or a light walk on a quiet wetland will be appreciated. On the other hand, those who were in the mood for more big feats yesterday can climb another peak or circumnavigate the lake on more challenging hikes. Whichever option you choose, there will be no shortage of natural beauty and experiences today.
Tobu bus towards Chuzenji Onsen and Yumoto Onsen

Continue south with a pleasant walk along the eastern shore of the lake. During October and early November, when it's peak season in this area, a bus runs between Chosenju Onsen, Chuzenju Temple, the observation deck near the summit of Mount Hangetsuyama, and the parking lot just below its summit. However, outside of this season, public transport in this area does not operate.
A nice temple on the eastern shore of Lake Chuzenji (the lake is named after this temple). The main attraction is an approximately 6 meter high statue of a Buddhist goddess carved from a tree that is still rooted in the ground. From the veranda of the temple there is a magnificent view of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

This villa used to be the holiday home of one of the influential British diplomats, later it became the official residence of the British Embassy. Today it is open to the public and visitors can learn about the life of this famous diplomat and British culture. In the adjacent café, you can enjoy tea overlooking the lake.

From the Italian Villa, there are several options for the next programme, the choice of which depends, among other things, on the period of your stay and the associated (in)functioning of public transport to more remote places, your fitness or appetite for more demanding and longer hikes, or perhaps your desire to save money.
The various programme options are described in summary below, with the starting point always being this Italian villa.
Option #1: Ascent to Mount Hangetsu
Visiting Mount Hangetsu using a bus that takes you to a viewpoint just below the summit is only possible during October and early November. Outside of this period, there is no public transportation here. During the rest of the year, this option can only be done by taxi, rental car, or hitchhiking.

!!TIP!!: on the way to the observation deck below the summit, there is another lower observation point (right by the road), where the bus also stops (but only during that period). If you want to split the journey and try a different angle, you can get off the bus/taxi/rental car here.
Another of the major mountains in the area offers the possibility of using hiking trails to reach it and, to a limited extent during autumn, a bus that will take you almost to the top. From the viewing platform it is then about a 30 min walk to the top of the mountain. The plateau below the summit itself offers spectacular views of the whole area with the dominant Lake Chuzenji and Mount Nantai, which you may have climbed yesterday.
You can then return to the Italian villa by the same bus, or another motor vehicle of your choice. Alternatively, you can walk. It is a leisurely route of about 3 km, leading exclusively downhill, so it is not particularly challenging. It should take you about an hour to complete.
For true lovers of hiking, there is also the option to go from the top of the mountain down to the southern shores of the lake and then walk along the southern and western shores to the Ryuzu waterfalls. The route is around 15 km, mostly downhill, and will take you about 4 - 6 hours. The route is shown as a screenshot from Mapy.cz in the photos at Mt. Hangetsu.
If you finished the trip at the Italian villa, you already know the way back to your accommodation - first a short walk/bus ride (if it's running) to the Chuzenji onsen stop, and then the familiar bus to Tobu Nikko station.
Option #2: Hike up Mount Hangetsu
This option has the same goal, which is to visit Mount Hangetsu. However, unlike the previous option, you will conquer it on foot. It's not an extreme hike - the route is approximately 3 km long with an elevation gain of around 400 m. Depending on your fitness level, it can be completed in 2-3 hours. The route is marked in the screenshot from Mapy.cz in the photo next to the Mt. Hangetsu location.
The descent is fast, it is an approximately 3 km long route leading exclusively downhill and should not take more than an hour. If you are there during the season when buses run or you have another motor vehicle option, you can of course choose to leave from the stop at the observation deck just below the summit for the return journey. The fare should be covered by your pass.
Also with this option, it is of course possible to continue on foot along the southern and western shores of the lake to the Ryuzu waterfalls, however, in combination with the relatively demanding hike to the top of the mountain, it is already a quite challenging trek (also in terms of time).
If you finished the journey at the Italian villa, you already know the way back to your accommodation - first a short walk/bus ride (if it runs) to the Chozenju onsen stop and then the familiar bus to Tobu Nikko station.
Option 3: Hike along the lake to Ryuzu Waterfall
This option skips the ascent to Mount Hangetsu and leads directly from the Italian villa to Ryuzu Waterfall. The route has 2 options (according to your taste and time):
a) Route along the northern shore of the lake - approx. 8 km, minimal elevation gain, walking time approx. 2-3 hours
b) Route along the southern shore of the lake - approx. 16 km, elevation gain around 600 meters, walking time approx. 4 - 6 hours

Option 4: Boat trip on the lake to Ryuzu Waterfall
This option is suitable for boat and cruise lovers, or families with children.
From the pier located near the villa, board one of the sightseeing boats that sail on the lake counterclockwise and stop at several ports in different parts of the lake along the way.

Translated, its Japanese name means "Dragon Head Waterfall" because of its shape. The waterfall is located just before the mouth of the Yukawa River into Lake Chuzenji. During autumn, the leaves of the local trees, colored yellow and red, enhance the fiery dragon atmosphere of the place. The waterfall can be viewed from a free viewing platform.

You can also walk (and take the entire nature trail through the wetland) directly from the waterfall, where an approximately 1.5 km long walk along the trail leading directly to the wetlands begins (you don't walk on the road). From here, the trail continues to the village of Yumoto onsen.
If, on the other hand, you don't want to walk at all and would like to view the wetland only from a viewpoint, take the bus to the Sanbonmatsu stop. Here you will find a viewing platform, but there are no paths leading from here into the wetland.
Lying at an altitude of 1,400 m, this wetland covers the plateau between Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto onsen. It offers some of the most beautiful hiking trails in the national park, particularly attractive during the autumn colouring of the wetland vegetation in reddish yellow.
The Senjogahara Plateau Nature Trail follows the Yukawa River for most of its course between Yumoto Onsen and Ryuzu Falls near the shores of Lake Chuzenji. The hiking trail offers excellent views of the swamps and surrounding mountains and takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours to complete. If only part of the route is enough for you, join the bus at Akanuma bus stop and walk northwards, then descend to the road to the bus stop, from which you return to Tobu Nikko station. As you know, Japan is the only empire in the world today. The home of the imperial family today is a palace located in a large park in the centre of the city on the grounds of the historic Edo Castle. Near Tokyo tower is a temple that provides a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the big city and looks out of place against the backdrop of the modern Tokyo tower. Outside the entrance to the temple, you'll find classic wooden prayer tablets and water ladles (locals wash themselves before entering the temple and praying).
You can see the tower copying the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris, which it even surpasses in height by 3 metres, from a distance. You can admire it from the outside, or take the elevator (or climb 600 steps) to the main observation deck and, if you still can't get enough, to the higher deck.

A small piece of China in this Japanese city, where you can taste some of the famous Chinese delicacies (t'ai-tse dumplings, noodles or rice with sauce and meat in all ways...) or buy a souvenir (Buddha figures, "maneki neko" cats luring you with a paw into shops, etc.). The entrance to the district is represented by a beautiful gate with a typical Chinese dragon.
A landscaped waterfront park with greenery, a fountain, a promenade and seating provides a view of the sea and the boats moored in the adjacent harbour.
This modern design international terminal building serves as a boarding point for passengers boarding the long-haul cruise ships that can be observed here. The entrance and interior of the terminal is inside the hillside, while you can walk or run along its roof, which is very original and tastefully built of smooth wood and "waves" in the pattern of the surrounding sea. You will also find benches facing the sea or the town centre, so you have beautiful views of the sea, the boats at anchor or the lively and colourful town centre with the nearby Ferris wheel.
Continue along the coast towards the city center. A landmark for you will be the Ferris wheel and modern skyscrapers in the local city center - Minato Mirai. Cross the elevated bridge to reach the islet, where you can observe the "red brick warehouse" on your right - original houses from the days of the old port, which served as a base for local merchants and goods. Today there are shops and various cultural events are held here.
A beautiful promenade that takes you from the island on which the city's symbol (the Cosmo 21 Ferris wheel surrounded by the Cosmo world amusement park) lies, across the bridge to the city centre with its skyscrapers lit up in the evening. The multicoloured cable cars that lead from the mainland to the island will fly overhead like fireflies. Of course, you can also ride them.

One of the most important Zen temples in Kamakura and Eastern Japan in general. It was founded in 1282 a year after the failed invasion of the Mongol invaders. One of the reasons the temple was founded was to commemorate the fallen Japanese and Mongol soldiers. The temple is built on a wooded hill. You first pass through the Sanmon entrance gate and find yourself at the main hall of Butsuden with a wooden statue of Buddha Shaka.

The Zen temple founded in 1160 is known as the "hydrangea temple" because of the many flowering plants of this species during the rainy season in June.

The path to Hansobo Shrine first leads through a village, then turns into a dense forest with a well-trodden marked trail. After a short (but hilly) journey full of mosquitoes :), we emerge at a viewpoint above Hansobo Shrine, which offers a beautiful view of the shrine and a large part of Kamakura.

The main and oldest Zen temple in the Kamakura area was founded in 1253. It is a large complex with many temple buildings stretching far into the wooded hills. After passing through the main gate, you will see the temple bell, considered a national treasure.

The most important and one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Kamakura. The shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the patron god of the Minamoto family and samurai in general. The entrance to the shrine is through a beautiful and high torii gate. In front of the entrance to the main part of the shrine are two ponds with typical lotuses. The shrine is also the venue for various events and celebrations of holidays, such as New Year's Day.

A shopping avenue leading from the station to Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu Shrine. As well as the opportunity to buy souvenirs, don't miss out on sampling perhaps Japan's most famous alcoholic drink - sake. Right in front of the street bars, local bartenders will sell you a "shot" of this drink for a very nice sum - 100 JPY. And because alcohol should be enjoyed, visit some of the street eateries and stalls and try another national symbol, this time a food - such as breaded and fried fish or another sea "monster" called tempura.
A special Enoden line runs between Kamakura Station and Fujisawa Station, which is more like a tram than a train. There are several other stops between the outlying stations, and each has some attractions (temples, shrines, beaches) nearby. You will gradually travel along this route, getting off and on several times. So consider buying a day pass for 800 JPY, after which you can travel freely on this line. While this is a negligible financial savings, you won't have to constantly buy tickets or top up your SUICA card.

Buddhist temple famous for its wooden gilded statue of Kannon with eleven heads. At more than 9 metres tall, it is one of Japan's largest statues. You can see it in the main temple building - Kannon-do hall. Adjacent to this hall is a smaller museum (extra entrance fee required) with other historical Buddhist artifacts.

This temple attracts visitors especially with the main symbol of the whole Kamakura area - a giant bronze statue of Buddha - the so-called Great Buddha.
From the area in front of Kotoku-in Temple, one of the largest Buddha statues in all of Japan - the Great Buddha bronze statue - proudly looks down on us. The statue originally stood inside the temple building, but after the typhoon destroyed it, it was left alone in the open air. Not only can you admire the statue from the outside, but you can also go inside for a nominal fee.

This Shinto shrine is built on a small island connected to the mainland by a bridge, which is easily accessible on foot from the nearest train station. The island is popular with tourists not only because of the temple, but also because of its parks, beaches, caves and views of the sea (and, if visibility is good, Mount Fuji). The Enoshima Shrine is not just 1 building or complex, it is several complexes scattered around the island. With the exception of the Benten statue, entry to the complexes is free.
On the mainland near the Enoshima islet there is also an aquarium, which will be appreciated especially by children and lovers of the underwater world.

Today you will have a beautiful day in the mountainous and volcanic area of Hakone National Park. You will take a romantic train ride winding through the local forested hills. Hop on the toboggan and be taken to the cable car station, which will take you over volcanic craters where you will see smouldering volcanic gases, yellow sulphurous vents below you and smell the typical smell of rotten eggs all around. You can also have these (unspoiled and unhealthy) at the top station of the cable car - the famous black egg prepared in sulphurous steam, the so-called kurotamago, is not to be missed (surely you want to extend your life by 7 years). Similarly, don't miss a cruise on a pirate-like cruise ship across the beautiful lake surrounded by local volcanoes and enjoy the sight of the massive torii gate towering majestically on the lake shore. If you're lucky with visibility, you might even spot the legendary Fuji Volcano - your next stop. The view of this national mountain "rising" above the surface of the lake is one of the most iconic in the entire country.
In the Hakone area, you will travel on a special train line serving this volcanic, hilly region. The most advantageous and convenient option is to purchase the Hakone Free Pass, which allows you to comfortably board and disembark on the train route, and the price includes other modes of transport, including cable cars, boat trips, etc.

The volcanic area where the cable car site is located. This area around the crater was formed after the last eruption of Hakone volcano about 3000 years ago and volcanic phenomena and formations are still observable here. Taste the local famous black egg prepared in sulphur steam, called kurotamago. According to local legend, eating it will extend your life by 7 years.

Ginkakuji Temple (Silver Pavilion) is a Zen temple built at the foot of the mountains in eastern Kyoto. Originally, the temple served as a retirement residence for the local shogun. Before the imperial family was moved to the new capital Tokyo, this palace served as the residence of the emperor and his family. One of Kyoto's most important shrines is built in the southern part of the city and extends into the surrounding hills. Most famous are its torii gates, which number several thousand and stretch along paths far beyond the temple complex into the local hills to the sacred Mount Inari, situated at 233m. In the complex you will see many fox statues, which are the embodiment of the messengers of the Shinto rice god Inari. The entrance to the shrine is the Roman Gate, behind which is the main Honden Hall. Behind it, then, the paths begin, densely surrounded by thousands of bran torii, which are donations from companies or individuals, with the names of the donors and the date of donation on the back.

At first a country villa, it was later converted into a temple and the Phoenix Pavilion was added, named after the shape of the building and the two Phoenix statues on the roof. The complex also includes the Treasury, which is exposed below ground level so as not to distract from the Phoenix Pavilion. In it, various temple artifacts are displayed.

Allegedly the oldest shrine in Japan, although no official record of its construction date has survived. It is closely associated with the nearby Byodoin Temple, for which it serves as a "guardian shrine".

Built in 710, the temple is a symbol of the city and features several buildings of great historical value, including a five-storey pagoda and a three-storey pagoda. At 50 metres, the five-storey pagoda is the second tallest wooden pagoda in Japan, only seven metres shorter than the five-storey pagoda at Kyoto's Toji Temple. None of the pagodas are open to the public.

A huge city park that is the centre of all the action. There are important temples and shrines (Todaiji, Kasuga Taisha, Kofukuji) and a national museum. Most of all, however, it is home to hundreds of wild sacred deer, which have already been mentioned. These have become a symbol of the city, as they are supposedly messengers of God. Deer cookies are sold in the park, and some deer have learned to bow to visitors to ask to be fed.
The most famous shrine of Nara. It was created at the same time as the capital and is dedicated to the deity responsible for the protection of the city. The exterior of the sanctuary is free to enter, while behind the main hall there are paid interior spaces. Kasuga Taisha is famous for its lanterns donated by the faithful. The bohemian district in the southern centre of the city, which comes alive especially in the evening thanks to the many pubs, bars and clubs with good prices for alcohol. It is also considered one of the most dangerous places in Japan. But not to worry - the Dangerous District is still a very safe place by Japanese standards, and no more dangerous than in nightlife in European cities. However, caution is always in order, especially at night. In the centre of the district stands the Tsutenkaku Tower, the symbol of the Shinsekai. The northern part of the district was inspired by Paris, while the southern part is meant to resemble New York's Coney Island.
The Tsutenkaku tower is 103 meters tall and serves as a viewing platform including an open platform. A 60 m high slide at the base of the tower is also an interesting attraction.

Remember the Akihabara district in Tokyo at the beginning of your Japanese adventure? You'll find something similar in the Den Den district on your way from Shinsekai towards the market. In addition to anime and manga comics popular in Japan, you'll find a huge amount of cheap electronics here. Dotonbori Street is the main avenue of the vibrant southern centre of Minami (Namba), stretching around the eponymous train and subway station. It is one of two downtowns (the other being Kita located around Osaka and Umeda stations). Minami and Dotonbori Street is the main centre for entertainment, shopping and dining. This is where most depictions of Osaka as a beating downtown with lots of neon lights, billboards, bars and restaurants come from. You'll especially enjoy a visit here in the evening, as this street never sleeps. One of the symbols of the street and its bright neon lights is the Glico running man figure on one of the buildings, or the giant crab Kani Doraku.
If you're a shopper, you might be interested in this shopping arcade with cheaper local boutiques as well as expensive luxury clothing chains. All in one place.
Another of the shopping districts near Dotonbori street is particularly popular with teenagers and young Japanese. Here you will also find many fashion boutiques catering especially to younger shoppers. All this is complemented by cafes and bistros. Overall, the area has a very modern, fresh and lively feel.
The last of the attractions around Dotonbori's main avenue is the interesting design work Namba parks, which is built in a canyon-like manner, symbolically representing an oasis of nature in an otherwise vast urban landscape. It includes a shopping mall with a cinema, shops, a roof garden and, of course, many restaurants and cafes.

The station itself is then a pleasant experience. What was once a dark and cramped space has now grown into one of the world's most unpleasant and modern stations. Osaka Station City, as the local station and adjacent shopping centre is called, boasts a large glass roof arching directly over the railway platforms. This gives the station a lot of new space. The northern and southern buildings are then connected by the Toki no Hiroba bridge, which provides passengers with a pleasant open space above the railway line, a convenient way to move from one side of the station to the other, rest and watch the trains.

Thanks to its characteristic colour it is also called the castle of the white heron. It is considered Japan's most spectacular castle because of its imposing size and beauty and its well-preserved, complex castle grounds. The castle is both a national treasure and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unlike many other Japanese castles, it was never destroyed by war, earthquake or fire and still survives today as one of the country's twelve original castles. A visit to the castle can be made more enjoyable by exploring the nearby Koko-en Gardens.

The beautiful Japanese garden near the castle consists of nine separate walled gardens designed in different styles of the Edo period. You will find, for example, a garden with a pond and waterfall, a tea garden where you can enjoy green tea, a pine, bamboo and flower garden.

Also called Carp Castle. Its main fortress is five stories high and its grounds are surrounded by a moat. There is also a shrine and ancient ruins within the castle grounds. Like the rest of the city, Hiroshima Castle was destroyed by an atomic bomb in 1945. The castle's current appearance is a reconstruction.

It's not usual for the city's main landmark and number one tourist attraction to be such a gloomy place where emotions surface and you experience strange feelings. In the case of Hiroshima Peace Park, this is the case. In addition to classic greenery, this sprawling park offers several reminders of the city's dark history.
It is no coincidence that the park was built here. Before the dropping of the atomic bomb during World War II, the area of the park today was a major economic and political hotspot for the city. That's why the site was chosen as a target. City officials then decided after the war that instead of rebuilding the site, they would use it to build a memorial.
In the park you will find, among others, the Peace Memorial Museum, the A-bomb Dome (Peace Memorial) and the Victims Memorial.
The main object of attention in the Peace Park is undoubtedly this museum dedicated to the city of Hiroshima, its history and in particular the event of 6 August 1945, when the atomic bomb was dropped by the US Army Air Force on the instructions of then President Truman. The museum consists of 2 buildings and focuses mainly on this tragic event, its historical context and its consequences for the city and its inhabitants. The exhibit is very personal and shows the stories of specific people who lost their lives or loved ones during the dropping or in the days and weeks after. There is also space for science - for example, the mining of uranium and its processing, the principle of nuclear reaction, the development of the atomic bomb and the use of the nucleus, among other things, in weapons. You will also find a list of countries that possess or are developing nuclear weapons. The visit is a very strong emotional experience.

Also known as the A-bomb (atomic bomb) dome, it is a remnant of the original factory. It is one of the few surviving buildings left standing in its original location after the bomb was dropped. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is therefore the only "tangible" evidence of the explosion.
This vaulted structure, standing between the museum and the A-bomb house, is a tomb and memorial to people who died either directly after the explosion or later as a result of injuries and exposure. Under the arch is a stone chest with a list of the victims, which number over 220,000.
The main artery of the lively city centre, located near Peace Park, is the indoor shopping street Hondori, lined with restaurants and shops. The street is pedestrian-only, so you can enjoy uninterrupted shopping and wash down or nibble on some local goodies before your rather gloomy experience in Peace Park. The selection is very rich. You can try the local version of okonomiyaki.
Parallel to this street is Aioidori Street, which is a main thoroughfare also used by cars and trams. Here you will find shopping malls if you need some more specific shopping.
Today you'll take a pleasant day trip to the sacred island of Miyajima, sometimes called Icukushima after the local shrine whose torii gate "grows" from the seabed. At high tide it is partially flooded with water and cannot be reached with dry feet, but at low tide you can easily reach it. The view of the flooded torii gate off the shores of the island is one of the highest rated images from around the country. However, the island is not only known for this great gate and the surrounding temples and shrines, but also offers opportunities for lovers of "mountain" tours and views of the surrounding hills and sea. There are even beaches, although it is not a typical bathing destination. As in Nara, you will come across sacred deer here, but they are not allowed to feed them. Don't forget to try the local sweet - a momiji manju cookie filled with bean jam or other filling. And since you're on an island, there's also a variety of seafood - such as fresh oysters. Both are widely sold here, and you're sure to come across these delicacies.

The island's main shopping street starts almost immediately behind the terminal and is lined with shops offering souvenirs with symbols of this sacred island and, of course, restaurants, cafes and bistros offering, among other things, the local specialty - momiji manju cookies with various fillings. You can also taste fresh oysters, for example.
Translated as a pavilion of 1000 mats, it symbolizes the spaciousness of this hall, which can accommodate approximately 1000 tatami mats. The pavilion is located on a hill directly above the main shrine of Itsukushima. It is very modest, with no significant decoration. There is a 5-storey pagoda nearby.

Absolute number one on the island. After all, the shrine gave the island not only fame and tourists, but also a name. Miyajima means something like "island of the shrine". The shrine is known around the world for its iconic "floating" torii gate. However, if you wait until low tide, the gate is fully revealed and can be reached. The sanctuary consists of several buildings, including a prayer hall, main hall and stage, which are connected by wooden walkways and supported by columns above the sea. If you stay on the island until sunset, the shrine and gate are beautifully illuminated in the evening.

This temple, dedicated to Benzaiten (goddess of eloquence, music, wisdom and wealth), lies on the road from the shrine towards the "mountain" temple of Daishoin. It is definitely worth a visit, if only because it is one of the three most famous Benzaiten temples in Japan.

A beautiful temple located at the foot of Mount Misen, from where the climb up begins. Daisho-in offers various buildings, statues and other religious objects for visitors to admire. These include Kannon-do Hall, Maniden Hall, a teahouse and a cave filled with statues of idols. All set in the surrounding countryside. You can expect a fairly steep climb along a comfortable forest path that protects you from the surrounding heat. You will alternate between steps and remnants of a paved road. Along the way, you will come across a few miniature temples or religious symbols. Depending on your physical condition and pace, the ascent can take 1 - 2 hours. An alternative is the cable car, the station of which is located elsewhere (see description at Mount Misen).
The Sacred Mountain, located at 500 m above sea level, is the highest point and naturally (on clear days) offers a beautiful view of the surrounding sea and the city of Hiroshima. This can be observed from the lookout built on the top of the mountain. There are also a number of Buddhist buildings near the top, which, due to their small size and location away from civilization, do not suffer from crowds and are thus very authentic and pleasant in combination with the natural environment of the mountain. In the forests you may spot sacred deer and if you are lucky, wild monkeys, which used to be common here but have recently caused problems and so have been taken to the monkey park.
Access:
The mountain lies at an altitude of 500m and as you start at almost sea level, you therefore have to cover an elevation gain of almost 500m over a relatively short distance, which means a fairly steep climb. You have 3 routes to choose from, but if you have followed the itinerary and are starting from the Daishoin Temple, it makes sense to continue on this particular trail.
The mountain can be ascended from multiple starting points and can also be reached by cable car. You can be taken up and come back down, or take the cable car both ways. The cable car station is in another part of the island (see the map in the web link for hiking trails and cable car stations).

For the return journey, I recommend taking the Momijidani trail, which leads down to Momijidani Park. From there, it's a short distance to the town and the terminal. However, if you want to visit the aquarium (note the last entry at 4 PM), Omoto Shrine, or take a walk around the sea and Itsukushima Shrine, the Omoto trail will be more suitable. Both routes are downhill, of course :)

Welcome to hell!! In Beppu, that is. You have arrived on the island of Kyushu, famous for its volcanic activity, which, in addition to active volcanoes, is manifested by hot springs and gas fumes. And it's because of the hot springs that it's worth coming here. The renowned spa resort of Beppu really does resemble hell. From the higher ground you can observe many smoking areas where the smoke rises to the sky. In fact, the town has the highest concentration of hot springs in the country, which the locals take advantage of to heat their homes. Throw off the shame and head to the traditional Japanese baths, or onsen. But beware! It's a slightly different spa with different rules than the ones we know in the west.

To get around Beppu, a day pass for the local Kamenoi Bus company will come in handy. It costs JPY 1,000 and is best purchased directly at the train station, where there is also a bus terminal and you will find the connections needed for transport to the distant springs.

From the train station, take bus 5 or 7 and get off at Kannawa bus station. Show your pass to the driver when boarding. The journey time is approximately 15 minutes, and buses run very frequently.
As written in the introduction, Beppu is mainly about hot springs and spas. So you have 2 main ways to enjoy this volcanic thermal area - by relaxing in the "bathing" onsens or by visiting the "non-bathing" onsens, which are too hot, toxic...well just unbathable :) Hells of Beppu is a system of 7 such thermal pools, each of which is different. They differ e.g. in colour, consistency of water (some are more like bubbling mud), others look toxic at first sight, in another one crocodiles swim...:). They are located in two main areas accessible by bus - Kannawa (5 lakes) and Shibaseki (2 lakes).

One of the most beautiful lakes with boiling beautiful blue water. There are several smaller orange-coloured ponds in the surrounding gardens, as well as a clear-water pond with lotus flowers whose large leaves are said to be strong enough to carry small children.
This pond impresses with its bubbling mud from the boiling pools. Nearby you will also find a hot pool with clear water where you can bathe your feet. If you pay an extra 620 JPY, you can go to the public baths that are included.
Here lie several boiling pools and a statue of a demon as a cook. In the area, you can drink the hot spring water, enjoy hand and foot baths, inhale the hot spring steam and sample various snacks cooked or steamed in the hot spring. A favourite is, for example, hot spring-steamed pudding.
The lake is popular for its inhabitants - crocodiles.

The lake with blood-coloured water is one of the most popular because of its unusual toxic colour.
The main attraction of this pond is the geyser, which spews water at intervals of 30 - 40 min for about 6 - 10 min. You can watch this demonstration of the power of nature from the opposite seating area or from the viewpoint located on the short forest trail behind the pond.

As it was written in the introduction, in Beppu you have 2 possibilities to meet hot springs. You have the option of exploring and seeing the "unbathable" pools after visiting the Hells of Beppu. Now it's time for the second option, to experience the hot springs for yourself at the local spa called onsen. But beware!! This is a very different experience from the baths in your own country.
As soon as you walk into the changing rooms, the spa (not just the changing rooms, but all the pools, saunas and other relaxation areas) are separated by gender. If you are travelling with a partner of a different gender, you will not meet again until the reception after the relaxation is over. You will understand why this is the case very soon - it is forbidden to enter the pools, saunas etc. in any kind of clothing, including swimwear. In short, you are naked all the time, only a towel is allowed to cover your most private parts. So there will be naked Japanese men/Japanese women walking around. For this reason, it is of course impossible to take pictures here, so the introductory photo of the place is only illustrative and comes from freely available sources.
There are a number of onsen here, so you don't necessarily have to visit this one. The offer is varied and besides the usual treatments (various natural or artificial lakes with different water temperatures, whirlpools, saunas) there are also specialities on offer, such as waterfall, steam baths, hot sand wraps...). The price also varies.
In the Hyotan onsen there are interesting features such as an outdoor natural thermal lake, massage waterfalls or wraps in sand of different temperatures.

If you were sorry when you climbed and looked at Fuji that it is a volcano whose eruptions are very rare and have not taken place for hundreds of years and you want to experience a more lively volcano, then you must not miss Aso volcano. Take a walk to the crater of one of the world's most active and largest volcanoes. It is a very active volcano located in the centre of Kyushu and eruptions, or at least gushes of gas and dust, are quite common. So frequent, in fact, that the volcano is sometimes partially or completely closed to the public for safety reasons. However, if everything goes well, it will be one of the greatest experiences you will take away from Japan.

On the way, there are beautiful views of the volcanic landscape covered with pastures and grazing horses.
The gateway to exploring this caldera, which is one of the largest in the world with a diameter of up to 25 kilometres and a circumference of over 100 kilometres. Here you will find an information centre with refreshments and souvenirs for purchase, as well as many beautiful views of the surrounding pasture-covered slopes. In addition to the viewpoints, many hiking trails start here and lead to the various peaks of Mount Aso. The most popular of these trails leads to the summit of Nakadake Mount Aso, which rises some 350 metres above the crater and provides spectacular views of the volcanic landscape.
The small sanctuary "in the middle" of the volcanoes attracts especially for its tranquility, which contrasts with the surrounding natural elements.
From the bus station, you can take a shuttle bus to the crater for 600 JPY one way. However, I recommend walking at least one way.
In the middle of the caldera of Mt. Aso caldera you will find several active volcanoes, including Mount Nakadake, whose spectacular crater is open to tourists.
The ascent takes about 90 minutes and is quite steep and a bit physically challenging. One can then descend from the top of the mountain for about 20 min to a better view of the crater or continue in the opposite direction to Takadake, the highest peak of the caldera of Mt. Aso.
Many sections of the trail are covered with loose volcanic rocks. Caution and appropriate footwear is a must.
