Sao Miguel totally got me, it's an island where you can do almost everything. There are countless hiking trails, beaches, thermal bathing, both paid and free access to nature, you can pay for diving, horse riding or canyoning, whale watching, surfing, sailing, rock climbing or cycling around the island.
Waterfalls everywhere you look have one advantage over Madeira, and that is that they are not so icy and all of them are easy to swim in. If you want to experience relaxation together with easy to moderate hiking up to a maximum of 6km, Sao Miguel is the right choice.
The tour includes:
Trip does not include:
The itinerary is only indicative , it depends on the weather and the mood of the group, everything is negotiable. We always discuss the day before what the program for the next days will be and we will adapt it operatively. I like active holidays and I will try to show you as much as possible the beauties of the island of Sao Miguel. The trip is for active adventurers who like light hiking combined with relaxing by the water at a relaxed pace without undue hurry and time pressure:)
We always return to our accommodation around 16-18hrs and then it's up to you whether you head out for dinner or take the car and go somewhere else or just laze around on the nearest beach :)
Arrival to Ponta Delgada airport on the island of Sao Miguel.
Visit the capital of the island, parting and free fun:)
For me, the most beautiful crater lake in Sao Miguel 🙂 There is a paid parking lot a short walk from the viewpoint. After that, it's up to us if you want to take the steep road down to the lake or take the ridge for some longer trekking. There are countless viewpoints around.

Black surfing beach and a beautiful restaurant and cafe. The waves are usually so big here that you can't swim, but even watching the waves and surfers is worth it :)
A short walk to the waterfall. After that we will visit the beach with a restaurant where they have excellent burgers and if you want a moderately difficult trail up to the cliffs is definitely worth it.

Beautiful view of the cliffs and the sea.

Freely accessible tea plantation near the tea processing factory, where you can also visit a small tea shop where they have two types of tea for free to taste, there is also the opportunity to buy local tea and tea products.

A waterfall with a pond with turquoise blue water. Easy trail with a steeper way down and up, if you have trekking poles, take them with you.

The trek starts at a small lake, where the water is one of the coldest in the Azores, even so, there is a great swimming area with a mini beach by the lake:) Then we continue to an old abandoned hydroelectric power station, which has been forgotten by nature. The road leads through an official trail in the middle of wild nature.

A unique thermal spring rising directly into the sea Termas da Ferraria. There are ropes in the sea to hold on to during the waves, and a lifeguard is present during the week, but he's pretty much on a roll as to what's going on in the water. Entry is free, there is a huge car park at the non-functioning hotel, there are free changing rooms and showers. There is a small trail along the shoreline in addition to the bay with the thermal. Swimming by the waves. Last time we had to go back repeatedly before it was safe to swim, but it was worth it.

Whalesighting sites.

Black sandy beach in Mosteiros with views and natural volcanic pools. On the beach there are two bars a short distance away there is a shop where we can buy local beer :) Swimming in the sea is supervised by lifeguards.

Beautiful church in Sete Cirades, we can walk around the lake or rent paddleboards.

Iconic viewpoint of the three crater lakes as the most famous view of the Azores, the path from the parking lot leads through a beautiful forest with many turns to another smaller lake or other viewpoints of the above mentioned lakes. Anyway, there are x other and much nicer viewpoints in the area without railings and with better views.

Old abandoned hotel and perfect view from its roof! enter at your own risk :-P

Remnant of old viaducts.

Overlooking the canyons.

There are at least two pineapple farms in Ponta Delgada alone, pineapple greenhouses with pineapples in various stages of growth and of course pineapple tasting and all kinds of cakes and drinks made from them, and I must admit that the pineapple mojito is unbeatable.

Parqua Da Caldeira Velha, where it is good to book the entrance for a given time a day in advance through the reservation system, the entrance is limited to a given number of people and the price is 10EU for 1.5h. There are four different thermal pools with different water temperatures. Small changing rooms, and for a fee you can leave things in the lockers. There is no bar or refreshments on site.

8.5 km circular trail starting at the waterfall Salto do Cabrito, where we can also swim, the waterfall is not thermal, to the thermal springs in the town of Caldeiras, where whoever wants to go for an entrance fee of 3UE to bathe in the thermal springs Termas das Caldeiras. The path is moderately difficult, some of it is climbing, it follows wooden paths over the river, alongside the thermal power plants, and along the way you will encounter vents of thermal sulphur vapour and places where the traditional Azorean dish Cozido is prepared.

Another of the beautiful churches in Sao Miguel.

One of the little-visited treks through the forest, through tunnels, around waterfalls, through pastures.

If there are droners among us, we'll go to the coast and check out this little island. We'll also visit a local bakery selling typical delicacies for this village - Queijadas De Vila Franca Do Campo.

A reef with a lighthouse and a magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean.

A beautiful park, full of waterfalls and hydrangeas.

Mayak on the east of the island with a place for barbecue and morning coffee.

Overlooking the lighthouse on the reef and a whale and ship watching spot.

God's trek to the majestic Salto do Prego waterfall, which runs alongside smaller waterfalls. If we are lucky we will be there alone and can swim. The waterfall is really beautiful and huge. On the way back we pass through an old almost deserted village overlooking the valley.

In Furnas, one of the classic dishes of the Azores, Cozido, is prepared in hot steams, consisting of different types of meat (chicken, pork, beef, various sausages) and vegetables (carrots, turnips, cabbage, potatoes) served with rice and covered with broth. The vegetables were really great. The best and most renowned Restaurante Tony's in the centre of Furnas.

Terra Nostra will be the second slightly larger park in Furnas, with a huge mud-coloured pool and two more top hot mini pools. These thermals are seriously really hot, but it was awesome. The water here is more sulphurous, there are only two showers for the whole pool and about 8 changing cubicles, so expect mega queues or change in advance and skip the showers 🙂 Besides swimming, there's a huge botanical garden so there's definitely plenty to do. The price is 16Eu and there is no time limit to enter. Again, there are no refreshments on the premises.

Furnas as an inhabited area of an inactive volcano, the city is full of places where sulphurous water or steam rises. There are a couple of paid parks around, like Grenaa, which I was not impressed with, plus there is a parking fee - 3EU per person - not per car- and then 10EU per person to enter the park, which is nothing special, the views are overgrown and overall it sucked. Next is the park by the chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias, you have to pay an entrance fee and the same for parking.

The vegetables were really great. The best and most renowned Restaurante Tony's in the centre of Furnas.

The other paid-for spa in Furnas is Poça da Dona Beija, where almost nobody has been, incomprehensibly. Again, it's a good idea to make a reservation a day in advance, these spas are open until 11pm and quite a few people come here just for night swimming when the pools are nicely lit. You'll find five pools with different temperatures, the cold shower is free and the hot one is free of charge, a locker costs 2eu + deposit. The price is 8EU for 1,5h.

An ascent to the highest peak of the island of Sao Miguel, Pico da Vara at 1,108 m above sea level in the Serra da Tronqueira mountain range. In clear weather, from the top you can see the whole island around. The area around Pico da Vara is a protected nature reserve. Remnants of the laurel forest grow here. In addition to the various species of laurel, there are many endemics such as the woolly fern, the Azorean holly and the Azorean blueberry. Pico da Vara is also home to the critically endangered Azorean stilt, whose population numbers only around 800 individuals, making it the most endangered bird species in Europe.
