Fancy a weekend getaway?🏃 To some big European city?🌍 Budapest is full of places worth visiting.😍
It's a beautiful city full of history, lovely scenery, cultural monuments, but also amazing venues and museums. In short, you'll find pretty much everything here. You can check out the iconic parliament building, stroll along the riverbank with beautiful panoramic views, and head back home with lots of memories and, most importantly, feeling perfectly rested.🌞
The first day is all about arriving, getting your bearings, and soaking up those first impressions of the city – no stress 🌟
If you arrive in the morning or afternoon and have some energy, head over for a coffee at Espresso Embassy, just a short walk from the center, or take a stroll along the waterfront. Want to do more? The Szimpla Kert bar is open from noon. During the day it's nice and quiet, and you'll have almost the whole place to yourself 💯 If you have a morning flight out on your last day, feel free to visit the sights from the final day today 📅 Adjust the day's schedule to fit your arrival time.
After arriving at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, head to the 100E (Airport Express) bus stop, which departs directly from the terminal. Take this bus to the final stop, Deák Ferenc tér, which is the main transit hub in the city center.
You will need a special ticket for this ride costing 2,500 HUF (approx. €6). You can buy it right at the airport from a machine or at a ticket counter. The same applies for your trip back to the airport.
Start off with a great breakfast, then head to the light museum, which is totally worth it! Next up is a Budapest icon: the Parliament building right on the banks of the Danube, an emotional memorial, and a basilica that dominates the whole area. You'll wrap up the day at a nice spot.
A great spot to start your day for all lovers of both savory and sweet breakfasts, with very friendly service in a cozy environment 🍰
To get to the next location, take the M1 metro. Right next to Lions Locker is the Opera station (direction Mexikói út); get off at the Hősök tere station. It couldn't get any closer to the square! 😉 But if you prefer, the Light Art Museum is also within walking distance.
This museum focuses on light art. It showcases works by artists who work with various forms of light, from neon installations to projections and interactive light exhibits.
For me, it's a MUST!⭐ A beautiful, photogenic environment where you can take great photos for Instagram 🤗 We were most surprised by the exhibit where 3D abstract space was projected all around us... it was just like being in another world.
📅Opening hours: every day 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM
It's just a short walk down a straight street from the museum to the landmark of Budapest. The advantage of the city is that most places are right in the center and close to each other, so you can always take a quick walk between them.
Right after you arrive, you'll head straight to one of the most important buildings in all of Hungary... the famous Budapest Parliament! 🎉
The building on the banks of the Danube was designed by architect Imre Steindl in a Neo-Gothic style, incorporating elements of Neo-Baroque and Renaissance. In total, there are 691 rooms inside, which is quite something. Right next to the building, you'll also find a statue of Gyula Andrássy, who was a key figure in Austro-Hungarian politics.
We just strolled around this landmark peacefully and took some nice photos. However, if you want to take a peek inside, even though you can buy tickets on the spot, it's better to buy them online in advance. That way, you'll be more certain 😉
📅Opening hours: every day 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
To get to the next spot, just keep following the Danube. The views of the opposite bank across the mighty river are beautiful! 💯
This memorial, with its very sad and emotional history, commemorates the tragic events associated with the Holocaust during World War II. Specifically, it was created in honor of the thousands of Jewish victims who were shot on the banks of the Danube by the fascist Arrow Cross Party.
The path will lead you along the river for a little while longer, but after a bit, turn toward the city and you'll be there in no time.
After an emotional visit to the monument, it's time to sweeten things up a bit and make the trip more pleasant. 🍰 This "patisserie" has the perfect recipe for that. We were just passing by, but those donuts in the glass window caught our eye so much that we had to stop, and I have to say, it was totally worth it!🍨
The basilica is dedicated to Saint Stephen, the founder of the Hungarian state and the first Hungarian king. I was surprised by how much the basilica stands out as a truly monumental structure among the other buildings in the city. If it caught your eye from the outside, I'm sure a tour will be worth it👌
📅Opening hours: every day 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
It's just a few streets away to the park with your bike🚶
The museum is right across the park. It's tucked away a bit in the courtyard.
A great place to have fun and laugh. There are over 70 different illusions that you can go through in about an hour to an hour and a half. Honestly, we went through it in less time and expected a bit more. Even so, it was a great way to spice up the day.
📅Opening hours: every day 10:00-20:00
The club is hidden underground, so hopefully you won't miss it thanks to the lights.
A nice way to wrap up the day. Relaxed atmosphere, chill vibes, and a huge selection of more than just drinks. So much so that I even had hot cocoa there... I mean, who can say they've had cocoa at a club, right? 😂 Also, the Wi-Fi here is great, so if you're out of data, you can easily share all your stories and posts from the first day of the trip.⭐
A trip to the opposite bank. Expect a bit more walking, but with views like those, you probably won't even notice 😉 You'll visit Buda Castle and the famous Fisherman's Bastion, relax on the beautiful Margaret Island, and even peek into the pinball museum. Of course, you can't miss the legendary Szimpla Kert either.
Walk from the hotel to the Blaha Lujza tér stop (about 2 minutes on foot) and hop on tram 47 or 49 heading south. Get off at the Fővám tér stop. The market hall will be right in front of you. The trip takes about 15 minutes.
This market is one of the largest and oldest in the city. It has several floors, with something different to discover on each one. In one, they sell fresh produce, meat, cheese, or classic Hungarian specialties like 🔥peppers and sausages. 🔥 Elsewhere, you can buy souvenirs and traditional handicrafts. 🎲
📅Opening hours: Monday to Friday 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM, Saturday 6:00 AM - 3:00 PM
PLEASE NOTE closed on Sundays
Today is all about the views. To kick things off, you'll walk up a hill crisscrossed with various paths, and you'll get your first look at the other half of the city – Pest.
Of course, you can skip this part and head straight to the Citadel, as there's a more well-maintained path leading directly there.
You'll go through all sorts of terrain... sometimes solid, other times a bit more fun. Wherever you wander, as long as you keep heading up, you'll get exactly where you want to go 😉
The Citadella is an impressive fortress located at the top of Gellért Hill in Budapest, offering some of the most beautiful views of the city and the Danube River. The hill is dominated by the Statue of Liberty, which commemorates the soldiers from World War II who liberated Hungary 💂
Time to head back down again. If you're not feeling confident, just plug the next location into Google Maps and follow it. But we managed just fine without them. You basically just need to keep going down, down, and down the hill 😁
The monument is dedicated to an important figure in Hungarian history, Saint Gerard, who was appointed the first bishop of Csanád. Directly below the monument is a beautiful waterfall, so feel free to hang around and go take a look from below, too. The photos from there will be nice... oh, and I won't even mention the view 😉😍
You'll be fine without Google Maps here too, because the signs will guide you. Just head down the hill, cross the road, and you're almost there. On the way to the castle, beautiful gardens will lead you along the river🎄
This castle is one of the most significant historical landmarks in the city. It was originally built in the 13th century as a fortress, but was gradually transformed into a royal palace that served as the residence of Hungarian kings. Today, Buda Castle is home to several important cultural institutions, including the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum, and the National Széchényi Library. 💯
You can enter the grounds for free at any time. If you're interested in a tour, find a type of tour that catches your eye on-site or online in advance (e.g., GetYourGuide or the castle's official website) 😉
📅Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM
ATTENTION closed on Mondays
A beautiful park surrounding the castle. Definitely worth a walk. I recommend bringing a snack and enjoying it here with the lovely view, peace, and nice atmosphere 🐛🌞
Continue straight along the river to reach the next spot. You'll see signs guiding you the whole way. Feel free to stop by any info centers you pass along the path.
This stunning Gothic church was the site of many Hungarian royal coronations and is famous for its colorful Zsolnay ceramic tile roof, which personally reminds me of those lovely Christmas sweaters 😁
✅ Seeing it from the outside was enough for us, but if you're interested in a tour, there are several parts you can explore. These include the museum, the tower, or a tour of the entire church. The price depends on what you choose (5-8 euros).
📅Opening hours: Monday to Friday 9:00-17:00, Saturday 9:00-13:00, and Sunday 13:00-17:00
All the landmarks are in one place here, as far as the eye can see 🤓
This is an iconic Neo-Gothic and Neo-Romanesque structure built between 1895–1902 as a symbolic tribute to the fishermen who defended this part of the city in the Middle Ages. It offers stunning panoramic views of the Danube River along with the Parliament, which is beautiful by day, but even more so at night when you see the beautifully lit city in front of you.👌🌙
Right next to it is also a statue of Saint Stephen, so definitely check that out too. Saint Stephen was the first king of Hungary. He is revered as the patron saint of the country, and his feast day is celebrated on August 20th 👲
You can visit the monument anytime completely for free. You only pay extra if you want to see the upper turrets 🌟
📅Opening hours: every day 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM (applies only to tower entry)
From Fisherman's Bastion, walk down to the river to the Szent Lukács Gyógyfürdő stop and catch tram number 19 heading towards Kelenföld vasútállomás. A few stops later, get off at Halász utca, from there you can walk to the bridge and turn onto the island halfway across. But if you feel like it, you can just take a stroll and walk the whole way there🚶
Margaret Island is a beautiful and vast park in the middle of the Danube that is definitely worth a short walk.🎄It got its name from Saint Margaret, the daughter of the Hungarian king Béla IV, who lived there as a nun.
Right at the entrance, you'll see the popular musical fountain, which synchronizes water jets with music and light effects. Further into the park, you can just relax, explore historical monuments, or even do some sports ⛹
It's a half-hour walk to the next location, or you can hop on tram number 4 or 6. Take it from the Jászai Mari tér stop (towards Széll Kálmán tér M) to Margitsziget / Margit híd. From there, you'll have to walk the rest of the way 😁
You can't miss this place, seriously!
After a full day of "hiking," you can kick back and relax here. Whether you're a pinball fan or have no clue what that word means, you're going to love it. The museum is packed with pinball machines, other iconic arcade games, and a bunch of stuff from gaming history I'd never even heard of before. The best part is that almost everything is fully functional and you can actually play it. You pay one entrance fee and then you can stay until closing time.🌠
📅Opening hours: Wednesday to Friday 16:00-24:00, Saturday 13:00-24:00, and Sunday from 11:00 to 22:00
PLEASE NOTE: Closed Mondays and Tuesdays
After a long day, you must be pretty hungry, so you deserve a proper meal! 🍔
The quickest way to get there is by public transport, with several connections available. The fastest one is taking the M3 metro from Nyugati pályaudvar station (towards Kőbánya-Kispest) to Deák Ferenc tér. Feel free to look up another route if you prefer.
Having this place right next to your accommodation is a win... unless you're trying to lose weight. The specials, the burgers, the aroma... it's just the kind of place that makes your mouth water as soon as you smell that delicious food around the corner. 🍔 It's great that they even have free restrooms, so this place can also be a lifesaver when you need one and there's nothing else around 😉
Szimpla Kert, a bar you absolutely can't miss, is located in the heart of the historic Jewish Quarter and is one of the most famous and iconic ruin bars the city has to offer. It features a design that combines antiques, artwork, and various decorative elements. The interior is full of art installations, which adds to the unique atmosphere that Szimpla Kert offers.
As for drinks, you'll find everything here from beer 🍺 and wine 🍷 to cocktails 🍸. If you're lucky, you might also catch a concert, a film screening, or various markets.
✅Regarding visiting hours, we were there both during the day and at night. Both times have their charm. In the evening, however, it might be at full capacity, so don't despair—just try your luck a little later. A spot will eventually open up. If you prefer a quieter visit, come in the early afternoon, and you'll have almost the whole place to yourself 😍
It's just a short walk to your accommodation. Just head around the corner 👉
If you're flying out in the afternoon, say goodbye to the city at the famous Heroes' Square and in the charming park with its ancient castle. Leaving in the morning? You can move these sights to one of the previous days and head straight to the airport. Everything depends on your flight time.
Walk from the hotel to the Blaha Lujza tér M stop (7 minutes). Take bus 7E to Keleti pályaudvar station, where you will transfer to bus 20E towards Hősök tere. Get off at the final stop, Hősök tere. The entire trip takes about 20 minutes.
This square is one of the most significant symbols of Hungarian history and culture, built to celebrate the millennium of the Magyars' arrival in the Carpathian Basin. The square is dominated by a monumental memorial featuring a statue of Archangel Gabriel and the statues of the seven tribal chieftains, representing the origins of the Hungarian state. 👲
It's quite possible that there will be some cultural event happening at the square during your visit, as the Museum of Fine Arts and the Műcsarnok (Kunsthalle) are also located here 🎉🎈
The trip is coming to an end, so it's time to soak up the local atmosphere one last time, stroll through a quiet park, and reflect on the trip as a whole. 🌞 The park is quite close to the train station, so you can easily plan your time here based on your train's departure. The vast park also features Vajdahunyad Castle and a beautiful Gothic chapel.
I found it interesting that the body of water next to the aforementioned castle turns into a giant ice rink in the winter. A shame we don't have something like that back home 🤔
Getting to the airport: two options depending on your departure time:
Make sure to be at the airport at least 2-3 hours before your flight. Have a smooth trip home.
