The adventure awaits
Jordan is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful countries in the world. 🌍
Although some people are put off by the fact that it is an Arab country, I personally absolutely fell in love with this place. In 2021, I went as a volunteer (= blonde in a pink sweatshirt with a backpack) to the Wadi Rum desert, where I lived in a camp in the middle of the desert. That's where we'll be visiting as part of our trip - we'll be taking a jeep trip into the desert, barbecuing underground in the traditional Bedouin way (called zarb), stargazing and unforgettable sunrises. 🌞
During the few days we will spend together, we will visit the capital city of Amman, the Dead Sea, the rock city of Petra and the Wadi Rum desert, taste the local food, take awesome photos and learn about history. But most importantly, we will experience an adventure and create memories that we may remember for a lifetime.
We will travel by minibus with a local driver, sleep in hostels and Bedouin tents in the desert, try street food and generally try to blend in with the locals. :)
This trip is suitable for complete beginners who are up for any fun and can manage to travel with a backpack (a suitcase would be really hard to lug through the ubiquitous sand).
You'll need comfortable clothes and shoes that you can manage to walk several kilometres a day in. Take a bund as well, it tends to be cold in the mornings and you will need swimwear for snorkelling. A battery or power bank will also come in handy (there is no light, electricity or signal in Wadi Rum, we will simply be in the desert).
Food will be provided during the day, breakfast will sometimes be available at the accommodation and sometimes it will be up to us. We can exchange money at the airport, as well as purchase a local SIM card with a great data plan as soon as we arrive.
A minibus will be available to us throughout the trip and is included in the price. Entrance fees to the sights and visa are included in the Jordan Passport, which is also included. Expect to pay extra for diving (or snorkelling) and for a night tour of Petra.

On arrival, we will have a short transfer to the town of Madaba, where we will check in and then rest.
On the second day we will have a tour of Madaba and go to Mt. Nebo. The second part of the day will be spent at the Dead Sea.
Madaba is a city in the south of Amman, which is famous for its so-called Madaba map in the form of a stone mosaic. This map is said to be the oldest cartographic depiction of the Holy Land and Jerusalem. Not far from this city is Mount Nebo, from where, according to the Bible, Moses was supposed to see the Promised Land and die. Today, the Dead Sea, Bethlehem and even Jerusalem can still be seen from this mountain in clear weather. On the way to Mt. Nebo, we will also see the local centre where stone mosaics are still handmade today.
The Dead Sea is actually a salt lake whose main tributary is the Jordan River and whose surface is 430.5 meters below sea level. The shores of the Dead Sea thus represent the lowest elevation on Earth. The name is due to the salinity of the water - it is up to 10 times saltier than ocean water and is uninhabitable for all plants and animals.
In the late afternoon we will be transferred to the town of Wadi Musa, the gateway to the rock city of Petra.
The third day will be one of the most challenging. We have a more than 20 km long trek through the rock town, but the views will definitely be worth it. We will start the trek in the early morning hours to enjoy the unique atmosphere and views without the crowds of tourists.
Petra is a rock town that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. In the Bible you might find the place referred to as Selah, but the Arabs call it the Valley of Moses. In its heyday, up to 30,000 people lived here, but unfortunately the area was hit by several earthquakes that ended the city's existence in the 6th century. Petra then served as a hidden refuge for Bedouins and nomads who passed through. It was hidden from the world until 1812, when the first European explorer, J.L. Burckhardt, reportedly visited the town.
During our journey, we will cross the entire valley from the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) to the Monastery (Ad-Dér). We will then follow the path past the royal tombs to a viewpoint where we can see the Treasury and the adjacent square. Most of the viewpoints in Petra are paid, but we will avoid all the paid viewpoints thanks to this trail, which is not well known among tourists.
After breakfast we will head to Aqaba where we will spend part of the day snorkeling in the Red Sea. In the afternoon, we will move to Wadi Rum, where we will enjoy a spectacular sunset and an underground barbecue called zarb.
We'll head straight to the centre, where another adventure awaits us - this time it will be diving or snorkelling in the Red Sea. We can visit some of the wrecks at the bottom of the sea (there is a tank or even an airplane), but there will also be a wealth of underwater life.
On our return we will have lunch in town, souvenir shopping and depart by local bus to Amman. Aqaba does serve as Jordan's main port, but we won't find many sights here.
In case of bad weather, we can try the typical Arabic tea, kunafa and hookah.
On this day we will relax in the Wadi Rum Desert, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The early morning can be spent watching the sunrise for the hardiest of us, while the rest of us can sleep in after a busy day and then head to breakfast. In the afternoon, we will have a jeep ride in the desert for several hours, visiting sand dunes, beautiful viewpoints or even a canyon with petroglyphs. We will end the evening watching one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever had the opportunity to see.
For dinner, the Bedouins will prepare for us their traditional underground barbecue, called zarb. We can spend the end of the day stargazing and watching the milky way. If the weather cooperates, we can even sleep under the wide sky.
The Rum Valley or the Valley of the Moon connected the Orient with the Roman Empire in ancient times and this nomadic route is still visible in the valley. There are also several thousand petroglyphs in the valley, charting, among other things, the life of the Nabataeans in the area. The gateway to this important area is the eponymous town of Wadi Rum, which is inhabited by the local Bedouins who used to live in the valley itself. Most of the campsites and tourist shops here are owned by Bedouins, who continue to invest resources in the area.
After a rest in the desert, we will head to the capital of Jordan - Amman.
Depending on the time of arrival, we will either go on a tour of the city, the Citadel or the Abdallah II Mosque.
Sunday will be devoted to the transfer back to Vienna and then to the Czech Republic. Due to the departure time, after breakfast we will go straight to the airport and the last experience will be the morning rush hour in the centre of Amman. From the plane we will have one more look at the Dead Sea and then we can start planning our next trip. 🌍
