But when I started looking for airline tickets, the prices were slowly exceeding the cost of accommodation. I was starting to change my plans a bit. Instead of going to France, I spontaneously and completely unplanned bought tickets to Milan, and instead of Skyscanner, I went to Invia.
Just what destination to choose? Egypt, Tunisia or Turkey with such a small child (10 months) is out of the question - or at least our courage won't allow it. If we didn't have a baby, we'd fly last minute, but by flying with a relatively young child, I wanted to have everything planned ahead of time and most importantly, I wanted a relaxed and carefree holiday. So I clicked through to the first minute section and filtered through Crete, Cyprus, Zakynthos, Spain and Bulgaria. It didn't take long to choose. All I had to do was "throw" one of the hotels into Google Maps to see what the road to the sea looked like and what the surrounding area looked like. When Cala Antena Bay showed up next door, my friend's words were, "That's where we need to go!" clearly confirmed that we would be flying to Mallorca in June.
We chose our stay with the idea that while we wanted to relax and unwind, we also wanted to explore a bit of the island. So immediately after booking our stay I started looking for a car rental company. However, the prices on the internet were so high that I thought that maybe no one can pay that amount. After all, it's almost as much as a holiday! So I tried to join a Facebook group of Czechs living in Mallorca and within a few days we had a car booked for 3x the price! (So a little tip for you.)
Since we flew from Prague, we went there on Monday. It would have worked out on Tuesday, but since everything is now dug up, there are closures and delays everywhere, we preferred to go a day earlier, so that we wouldn't stress about not being on time :).
The flight was supposed to depart at 15:40, but we were about 20 minutes late.
We landed at Palma de Mallorca airport after 9pm. I don't think I've ever seen a worse airport. Big, cluttered, and by the time you get your bags, you'll have walked to the other side of Mallorca.
We were given a tour of the area beforehand. Our hotel was in the resort of Calas de Mallorca, which is about 60 km from the capital. Immediately after breakfast we went to Cala Antena bay, which was about 500m behind the hotel - you could see a bit from the balcony.
According to the photos we had high expectations, from the top (see photos) it looked beautiful, but the reality was not so rosy. The beach was dirty, the entrance to the water was rocky, winding and there was algae and mess everywhere. I'm thinking that the horrible journey from the hotel to here (unless you carry a baby in a stroller, it's probably even acceptable) might not have been worth it. But I won't be such a pessimist, the initial view was slowly breathtaking!
On Thursday we had our first day of sightseeing to Palma. At 9am, Mrs. Lucie brought our car to the hotel and we were ready to go! After a rather difficult parking in the underground garage, we spent an hour admiring the beauty of the Cathedral of Our Lady. We had ice cream in a cute little alley, bought a magnet (because you don't come back from any country without a magnet!) and headed towards Platja des Trenc beach. From the parking lot there was a beautiful sandy path between the trees, I'm quite sorry that I didn't take a picture of it, but if you have the chance, make sure to go here :).
Friday was a rollicking one. The original plan was to go to Cala Varques bay, but on the way to the parking lot we found it quite difficult to get there without a stroller, let alone with one. So we quickly changed our plans and headed to Platja de Cala Mendia beach. It was quite windy, so I was knocking my scythe around for the first hour or so, but eventually the sun came out and it was fine.
On Saturday we had quite a long drive to the end of Mallorca. We wanted to go to see Far de Formentor. But it's closed now, and the winding road only took us to Mirador Es Colomer. Then, as we drove down the winding road, we at least stopped at the Albertcutx Watchtower. On the way back to the hotel, we docked at Platja de Muro Beach for a few hours, and it was perhaps one of the nicest beaches we visited on the island. The beach is dominated by the pier, but we didn't even get to it because the mime changed our plans a bit, but we enjoyed the sea anyway :)!
We had rented a car for only three days, returned it on Saturday evening and on Sunday we were again dependent on the hotel's surroundings. This time we went to Platja de Cala es Domingos Grans beach, where a minibus ran directly from our hotel.
We had the Cala Domingos beach just behind the hotel. We went to it on the penultimate day of our stay because it was close. It could be compared in size to Friday's Cala Mendia, but it was much nicer and cleaner. We spent about 4 hours there and it was a nice end to our stay :).
On Monday evening we had a flight back to Prague. We were an hour late, but basically we didn't mind. We didn't want to go home at all and we are looking forward to visiting Mallorca again. There are still places on our wishlist that we haven't been to yet :).
Overall, the holiday cost us about 35k for all, but you can definitely travel to Mallorca for half the price! We traveled through a travel agency (27k), rented a car (156€/3 days - included a car seat for our son (3€/day) and delivery/drop-off from the hotel (30€)), filled up with gas (28€ - we drove over 300 km and got out just fine), paid parking fees (12€), etc., so the price was higher. Next time, however, we will definitely take the low cost route to Mallorca.
