Thingvellir National Park

Thingvellir National Park is located about 40 kilometres northeast of Reykjavík. It lies in a furrowed valley that marks the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The more than 16,000 km long rift between the plates is crisscrossed with paths. We can also reach the Öxarárfoss waterfall about 10 minutes from the car park. We will also get to see the Silfra Canyon.

About 10 km from the geysers, we will see one of the most majestic waterfalls in Iceland and indeed Europe, which falls in two stages and flows into a canyon more than 2km wide. It's a giant waterfall to start with.

About 45 minutes from the car park we reach the river where thermal hot water mixes with cold water. This is the place you want to visit. Ideally, we'll go here at sunrise. Open portages available. The thermal river is for a voluntary contribution to keep the area clean.

Kvernufoss

Kvernufoss, also Kvarnarhólsárfoss, is a lesser-known Icelandic waterfall on the Kverna River. It drops down from a height of 40m and is located in a beautiful gorge about 10 minutes walk from the car park. Kvernufoss is overshadowed by the glory of the nearby Skógafoss waterfall, yet and for that reason I didn't have it in my itinerary last time, which I now consider a big mistake that I must rectify . That is, unlike Skógafoss, which is constantly under siege by thousands of people, you can still enjoy (unexpected) solitude here. And, like Seljalandsfoss, you can go beyond the waterfall and enjoy interesting views.

Just opposite the abandoned plane we turn off the Ring Road to the first glacier, the way to it from the parking lot is about 20 minutes, we do not climb the glacier, as it is possible only with a guide and sufficient equipment.

Dyrhólaey Viewpoint

The Dyrhólaey arch forms a small peninsula and is the southernmost point of (mainland) Iceland. The rock formations attract tens of thousands of migratory birds to nest every summer. Beautiful views of the surrounding area, on one side towards Reynisfjara beach with the Reynisdrangar cliffs, or on the other side overlooking Sólheimasandur beach with the iconic site - the wreck of the DC-3 Dakota aircraft, or all the way to the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. There is a lighthouse and near the parking lot on the cliff we can observe puffins.

Reynisfjara Beach

Reynisfjara is perhaps Iceland's most famous beach, with its deep black volcanic sand and impressive backdrop of basalt cliffs, caves, rocks and lush green meadows. According to many rankings, Reynisfjara is even considered the most beautiful beach in the world. Because of its shape, it is also known as Black Sand Beach. The sunrises here are magical. We can also go to the cliff above the stretching beach, the walk up and back takes about 3 hours.

Svartifoss Trail
Physical difficulty: Easy

One of the most interesting waterfalls in Iceland is Svartifoss Waterfall, located in Skaftafell National Park. The Stórilækur River falls 'only' 20 metres, which is not much for Iceland but the cheddar hexagons resembling the pipes of an organ give the place its charm and attract crowds of tourists. The waterfall is surrounded by a fence, so you can't take pictures under the waterfall, but it's still a very nice place to visit.

The top place in Iceland that we can't miss, and which has many forms. The incredible black sand dunes with the imposing Mount Vestrahorn in the background are one of the most unique stops along the Ring Road in Iceland. To get to Stokksnes, we will have to pass through the Viking Café property where they have delicious pastries and coffee. If we don't stay at this hotel, you will have to pay the entrance fee to Stokness beach which is 900ISk (150Kč). We can wander around as long as we want and we can go seal watching.

Svínafellsjökull

The drive of about 10-15 minutes to the viewpoint on one of the many ice chutes of Europe's largest glacier Vatnajökull, called Svínafellsjökull, which together with the neighbouring Skaftafell is one of the most easily accessible glacial tongues, and with the view of Iceland's highest mountain Hvannadalshnjúkur (2,110 m above sea level) in the background, you will simply be enchanted.


In addition, the Svínafellsjökull glacier is very accessible on its sides, where hiking trails lead along the normal terrain. You can't enter the glacier without a glacier guide, and I really don't recommend risking it, even for your own safety. This glacier has also been featured in many films, including Game of Thrones.

You know the series Katla ? Then you'll definitely recognize a few places from this town. The village of Vík lies on the very edge of the Mýrdalssandur glacier, which covers the crater of Katla, Iceland's most active volcano. The volcano has been dormant since 1918, the last time it erupted so far, leading to discussions about its imminent awakening and potential danger. The village, abbreviated as Vík, is the southernmost human settlement in Iceland and extends about 180 kilometres from Reykjavik. Despite its relatively small population (less than 300), it is the largest inhabited area within a 70-kilometre radius.

Another thermal bathing, this time for the hardy and brave, as the water is only 20-25 degrees, due to the size of the pool. The pool also has a larger amount of cyanobacteria and there are definitely more natural bathers in Iceland :-D

Seljalandsfoss is an iconic (perhaps like everything in Iceland) vooopar with opening hours :-D 

It's located a few metres from the car park, and if we arrive early in the morning we'll have it all to ourselves, although the passageway won't be open yet, so let's head further along the cliff to another hidden waterfall, Gljúfrabui.

A previously hidden, unvisited, forgotten  and shaded waterfall hidden in a cave. On my solid visit we were the only ones to go there, two years later there are lines out of the cave waiting for a chance to take a picture on the famous rock in front of the waterfall. Hopefully we will be lucky enough to be there in the morning on our own.

Thingvellir National Park

Thingvellir National Park is located about 40 kilometres northeast of Reykjavík. It lies in a furrowed valley that marks the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The more than 16,000 km long rift between the plates is crisscrossed with paths. We can also reach the Öxarárfoss waterfall about 10 minutes from the car park. We will also get to see the Silfra Canyon.

Kvernufoss

Kvernufoss, also Kvarnarhólsárfoss, is a lesser-known Icelandic waterfall on the Kverna River. It drops down from a height of 40m and is located in a beautiful gorge about 10 minutes walk from the car park. Kvernufoss is overshadowed by the glory of the nearby Skógafoss waterfall, yet and for that reason I didn't have it in my itinerary last time, which I now consider a big mistake that I must rectify . That is, unlike Skógafoss, which is constantly under siege by thousands of people, you can still enjoy (unexpected) solitude here. And, like Seljalandsfoss, you can go beyond the waterfall and enjoy interesting views.

Just opposite the abandoned plane we turn off the Ring Road to the first glacier, the way to it from the parking lot is about 20 minutes, we do not climb the glacier, as it is possible only with a guide and sufficient equipment.

Dyrhólaey Viewpoint

The Dyrhólaey arch forms a small peninsula and is the southernmost point of (mainland) Iceland. The rock formations attract tens of thousands of migratory birds to nest every summer. Beautiful views of the surrounding area, on one side towards Reynisfjara beach with the Reynisdrangar cliffs, or on the other side overlooking Sólheimasandur beach with the iconic site - the wreck of the DC-3 Dakota aircraft, or all the way to the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. There is a lighthouse and near the parking lot on the cliff we can observe puffins.

Reynisfjara Beach

Reynisfjara is perhaps Iceland's most famous beach, with its deep black volcanic sand and impressive backdrop of basalt cliffs, caves, rocks and lush green meadows. According to many rankings, Reynisfjara is even considered the most beautiful beach in the world. Because of its shape, it is also known as Black Sand Beach. The sunrises here are magical. We can also go to the cliff above the stretching beach, the walk up and back takes about 3 hours.

Svartifoss Trail
Physical difficulty: Easy

One of the most interesting waterfalls in Iceland is Svartifoss Waterfall, located in Skaftafell National Park. The Stórilækur River falls 'only' 20 metres, which is not much for Iceland but the cheddar hexagons resembling the pipes of an organ give the place its charm and attract crowds of tourists. The waterfall is surrounded by a fence, so you can't take pictures under the waterfall, but it's still a very nice place to visit.

The top place in Iceland that we can't miss, and which has many forms. The incredible black sand dunes with the imposing Mount Vestrahorn in the background are one of the most unique stops along the Ring Road in Iceland. To get to Stokksnes, we will have to pass through the Viking Café property where they have delicious pastries and coffee. If we don't stay at this hotel, you will have to pay the entrance fee to Stokness beach which is 900ISk (150Kč). We can wander around as long as we want and we can go seal watching.

Svínafellsjökull

The drive of about 10-15 minutes to the viewpoint on one of the many ice chutes of Europe's largest glacier Vatnajökull, called Svínafellsjökull, which together with the neighbouring Skaftafell is one of the most easily accessible glacial tongues, and with the view of Iceland's highest mountain Hvannadalshnjúkur (2,110 m above sea level) in the background, you will simply be enchanted.


In addition, the Svínafellsjökull glacier is very accessible on its sides, where hiking trails lead along the normal terrain. You can't enter the glacier without a glacier guide, and I really don't recommend risking it, even for your own safety. This glacier has also been featured in many films, including Game of Thrones.

You know the series Katla ? Then you'll definitely recognize a few places from this town. The village of Vík lies on the very edge of the Mýrdalssandur glacier, which covers the crater of Katla, Iceland's most active volcano. The volcano has been dormant since 1918, the last time it erupted so far, leading to discussions about its imminent awakening and potential danger. The village, abbreviated as Vík, is the southernmost human settlement in Iceland and extends about 180 kilometres from Reykjavik. Despite its relatively small population (less than 300), it is the largest inhabited area within a 70-kilometre radius.

It's located a few metres from the car park, and if we arrive early in the morning we'll have it all to ourselves, although the passageway won't be open yet, so let's head further along the cliff to another hidden waterfall, Gljúfrabui.

A previously hidden, unvisited, forgotten  and shaded waterfall hidden in a cave. On my solid visit we were the only ones to go there, two years later there are lines out of the cave waiting for a chance to take a picture on the famous rock in front of the waterfall. Hopefully we will be lucky enough to be there in the morning on our own.

Thingvellir National Park

Thingvellir National Park is located about 40 kilometres northeast of Reykjavík. It lies in a furrowed valley that marks the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The more than 16,000 km long rift between the plates is crisscrossed with paths. We can also reach the Öxarárfoss waterfall about 10 minutes from the car park. We will also get to see the Silfra Canyon.

Kvernufoss

Kvernufoss, also Kvarnarhólsárfoss, is a lesser-known Icelandic waterfall on the Kverna River. It drops down from a height of 40m and is located in a beautiful gorge about 10 minutes walk from the car park. Kvernufoss is overshadowed by the glory of the nearby Skógafoss waterfall, yet and for that reason I didn't have it in my itinerary last time, which I now consider a big mistake that I must rectify . That is, unlike Skógafoss, which is constantly under siege by thousands of people, you can still enjoy (unexpected) solitude here. And, like Seljalandsfoss, you can go beyond the waterfall and enjoy interesting views.

Just opposite the abandoned plane we turn off the Ring Road to the first glacier, the way to it from the parking lot is about 20 minutes, we do not climb the glacier, as it is possible only with a guide and sufficient equipment.

Dyrhólaey Viewpoint

The Dyrhólaey arch forms a small peninsula and is the southernmost point of (mainland) Iceland. The rock formations attract tens of thousands of migratory birds to nest every summer. Beautiful views of the surrounding area, on one side towards Reynisfjara beach with the Reynisdrangar cliffs, or on the other side overlooking Sólheimasandur beach with the iconic site - the wreck of the DC-3 Dakota aircraft, or all the way to the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. There is a lighthouse and near the parking lot on the cliff we can observe puffins.

Reynisfjara Beach

Reynisfjara is perhaps Iceland's most famous beach, with its deep black volcanic sand and impressive backdrop of basalt cliffs, caves, rocks and lush green meadows. According to many rankings, Reynisfjara is even considered the most beautiful beach in the world. Because of its shape, it is also known as Black Sand Beach. The sunrises here are magical. We can also go to the cliff above the stretching beach, the walk up and back takes about 3 hours.

Svartifoss Trail
Physical difficulty: Easy

One of the most interesting waterfalls in Iceland is Svartifoss Waterfall, located in Skaftafell National Park. The Stórilækur River falls 'only' 20 metres, which is not much for Iceland but the cheddar hexagons resembling the pipes of an organ give the place its charm and attract crowds of tourists. The waterfall is surrounded by a fence, so you can't take pictures under the waterfall, but it's still a very nice place to visit.

The top place in Iceland that we can't miss, and which has many forms. The incredible black sand dunes with the imposing Mount Vestrahorn in the background are one of the most unique stops along the Ring Road in Iceland. To get to Stokksnes, we will have to pass through the Viking Café property where they have delicious pastries and coffee. If we don't stay at this hotel, you will have to pay the entrance fee to Stokness beach which is 900ISk (150Kč). We can wander around as long as we want and we can go seal watching.

Svínafellsjökull

The drive of about 10-15 minutes to the viewpoint on one of the many ice chutes of Europe's largest glacier Vatnajökull, called Svínafellsjökull, which together with the neighbouring Skaftafell is one of the most easily accessible glacial tongues, and with the view of Iceland's highest mountain Hvannadalshnjúkur (2,110 m above sea level) in the background, you will simply be enchanted.


In addition, the Svínafellsjökull glacier is very accessible on its sides, where hiking trails lead along the normal terrain. You can't enter the glacier without a glacier guide, and I really don't recommend risking it, even for your own safety. This glacier has also been featured in many films, including Game of Thrones.

You know the series Katla ? Then you'll definitely recognize a few places from this town. The village of Vík lies on the very edge of the Mýrdalssandur glacier, which covers the crater of Katla, Iceland's most active volcano. The volcano has been dormant since 1918, the last time it erupted so far, leading to discussions about its imminent awakening and potential danger. The village, abbreviated as Vík, is the southernmost human settlement in Iceland and extends about 180 kilometres from Reykjavik. Another thermal bathing, this time for the hardy and brave, as the water is only 20-25 degrees, due to the size of the pool. The pool also has a larger amount of cyanobacteria and there are definitely more natural bathers in Iceland :-D

Gljufrabui

A previously hidden, unvisited, forgotten  and shaded waterfall hidden in a cave. On my solid visit we were the only ones to go there, two years later there are lines out of the cave waiting for a chance to take a picture on the famous rock in front of the waterfall. Hopefully we will be lucky enough to be there in the morning on our own.

Kvernufoss

Kvernufoss, also Kvarnarhólsárfoss, is a lesser-known Icelandic waterfall on the Kverna River. It drops down from a height of 40m and is located in a beautiful gorge about 10 minutes walk from the car park. Kvernufoss is overshadowed by the glory of the nearby Skógafoss waterfall, yet and for that reason I didn't have it in my itinerary last time, which I now consider a big mistake that I must rectify . That is, unlike Skógafoss, which is constantly under siege by thousands of people, you can still enjoy (unexpected) solitude here. And, like Seljalandsfoss, you can go beyond the waterfall and enjoy interesting views.

Sólheimajökull

Just opposite the abandoned plane we turn off the Ring Road to the first glacier, the way to it from the parking lot is about 20 minutes, we do not climb the glacier, as it is possible only with a guide and sufficient equipment.

Dyrhólaey Viewpoint

The Dyrhólaey arch forms a small peninsula and is the southernmost point of (mainland) Iceland. The rock formations attract tens of thousands of migratory birds to nest every summer. Beautiful views of the surrounding area, on one side towards Reynisfjara beach with the Reynisdrangar cliffs, or on the other side overlooking Sólheimasandur beach with the iconic site - the wreck of the DC-3 Dakota aircraft, or all the way to the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. There is a lighthouse and near the parking lot on the cliff we can observe puffins.

Reynisfjara Beach

Reynisfjara is perhaps Iceland's most famous beach, with its deep black volcanic sand and impressive backdrop of basalt cliffs, caves, rocks and lush green meadows. According to many rankings, Reynisfjara is even considered the most beautiful beach in the world. Because of its shape, it is also known as Black Sand Beach. The sunrises here are magical. We can also go to the cliff above the stretching beach, the walk up and back takes about 3 hours.

Svartifoss Trail
Physical difficulty: Easy

One of the most interesting waterfalls in Iceland is Svartifoss Waterfall, located in Skaftafell National Park. The Stórilækur River falls 'only' 20 metres, which is not much for Iceland but the cheddar hexagons resembling the pipes of an organ give the place its charm and attract crowds of tourists. The waterfall is surrounded by a fence, so you can't take pictures under the waterfall, but it's still a very nice place to visit.

Physical difficulty: Easy

The top place in Iceland that we can't miss, and which has many forms. The incredible black sand dunes with the imposing Mount Vestrahorn in the background are one of the most unique stops along the Ring Road in Iceland. To get to Stokksnes, we will have to pass through the Viking Café property where they have delicious pastries and coffee. If we don't stay at this hotel, you will have to pay the entrance fee to Stokness beach which is 900ISk (150Kč). We can wander around as long as we want and we can go seal watching.

Svínafellsjökull

The drive of about 10-15 minutes to the viewpoint on one of the many ice chutes of Europe's largest glacier Vatnajökull, called Svínafellsjökull, which together with the neighbouring Skaftafell is one of the most easily accessible glacial tongues, and with the view of Iceland's highest mountain Hvannadalshnjúkur (2,110 m above sea level) in the background, you will simply be enchanted.


In addition, the Svínafellsjökull glacier is very accessible on its sides, where hiking trails lead along the normal terrain. You can't enter the glacier without a glacier guide, and I really don't recommend risking it, even for your own safety. This glacier has also been featured in many films, including Game of Thrones.

You know the series Katla ? Then you'll definitely recognize a few places from this town. The village of Vík lies on the very edge of the Mýrdalssandur glacier, which covers the crater of Katla, Iceland's most active volcano. The volcano has been dormant since 1918, the last time it erupted so far, leading to discussions about its imminent awakening and potential danger. The village, abbreviated as Vík, is the southernmost human settlement in Iceland and extends about 180 kilometres from Reykjavik. Another thermal bathing, this time for the hardy and brave, as the water is only 20-25 degrees, due to the size of the pool. The pool also has a larger amount of cyanobacteria and there are definitely more natural bathers in Iceland :-D 

There are changing facilities for each sex separately, again with a voluntary maintenance fee.

Seljalandsfoss is an iconic (perhaps like everything in Iceland) vooopar with opening hours :-D 

It's located a few metres from the car park, and if we arrive early in the morning we'll have it all to ourselves, although the passageway won't be open yet, so let's head further along the cliff to another hidden waterfall, Gljúfrabui.

Gljufrabui

A previously hidden, unvisited, forgotten  and shaded waterfall hidden in a cave. On my solid visit we were the only ones to go there, two years later there are lines out of the cave waiting for a chance to take a picture on the famous rock in front of the waterfall. Hopefully we will be lucky enough to be there in the morning on our own.
