itinerary by Monika Nedvedova

We have another trip to Iceland coming up, an island that is rough on life. In winter there is little light, in summer too much. It's called the Land of Fire and Ice. It is also the land of wind and weather that changes several times a day. Glaciers, waterfalls, beaches, mountains, hot pools - it's all Iceland.
This term we will visit the north of the island and the Snaefellsnes peninsula. Do you think you have to go to the notorious and most visited south to experience Iceland? The opposite is true. The real Iceland for me is the north of the country. The trip is therefore suitable for travellers who have never been to Iceland and would like to see what only about 35% of all incoming tourists visit. Or for those who have already been to the south of Iceland and would like to visit another part of it.
This time we will meet at the airport in Iceland, I will send you all the instructions for the trip.
Why come to Iceland with me?
Note: due to the fact that there are no fixed flight schedules for next year yet, departure and arrival dates may vary +-2 days from the original dates.
If anyone has severe food intolerances such as gluten, vegan or vegetarian they must contact me in advance to arrange or deduct the amount to be used for meals. For example, vegans and gluten-free people I am usually unable to accommodate in the diet and therefore the food will be on their shoulders. On the other hand, I can deal with vegetarians and lactose intolerant people :)
Included in the excursion:
What to bring:
The group will meet at the airport at 20:00. After check-in, there will be time to get acquainted with fellow travellers. Then we will board the plane and fly to Iceland.
Meet at Prague airport at 20:00. Check-in of luggage and security check follows. Then we just wait for the departure.
Arrival to Iceland is at 23:50. I'll pick up the car here, while you pick up all your luggage and meet me in front of the airport hall.
By car we will go straight to our first accommodation, which is just a short walk from the airport. So we can jump into our beds and get a good night's sleep for the adventure. There will be 3 bedrooms, two for 2 people and one for 4 people. This is exactly the exception where it is necessary to sleep other than in 2's, unfortunately there is no other option here. I trust we will all survive the few hours of sleep we will get.
In the morning we sleep after the overnight flight and set off at 9:30 to the north of the island. To make the journey less boring, we stop at a beautiful waterfall in a small canyon and an old Icelandic church.
On arrival in the north, we will shop for groceries and check in. I expect to arrive around 6pm.

For the next couple of nights I chose this, my favourite, urban villa. We will have four bedrooms, each sleeping two people, two bathrooms and a hot tub.
We will leave at 8:00 am. First we'll go to a kind of Icelandic stonehenge.... It's actually a monument to the sun, which I understand in Iceland, the sun doesn't shine much, although the north, paradoxically, is the best in terms of sunny days. We then move on to the beautiful cliffs where we will trek, we will see a bunch of cool rock formations and lots of birds, definitely a nice walk to start with. Finally, we'll stop at the most massive waterfall in Europe. We will arrive at our accommodation between 8-9pm.
This place is guaranteed to be one of the less visited ones.
Where we will trek along the cliffs along the ocean. 7.5 km in total and an elevation gain of 110 meters. This place is guaranteed to be one of the least visited.

Today we will start at 6 am, because we have two longer treks ahead of us. First, we're going to explore a place called echo rocks. Then we will go to see a geothermal water cave. You can't swim in the cave because of the unstable temperature of the water, but it's still a beautiful sight. We end the day in an area with a system of rocks and caves, where we trek to one of the most iconic volcanoes in the north of the island. We will arrive at our accommodation around 8pm.
Where we will trek 7.5 km with an elevation gain of 200 meters. I rate it as easy. This place is definitely one of those that are not widely visited.

Here we will trek through the national park to the iconic volcano.11 km with an elevation gain of 270 meters.

We'll leave at 7 o'clock in the morning. We have a stop at two beautiful waterfalls in the north. At one of them we will buy souvenirs. And then we'll be on our way to the peninsula. We'll stop at a beautiful volcano on the way. Finally, we'll stock up on groceries and move on to our next accommodation. I expect to arrive around 7pm.

For the rest of the nights I took us to this house on a horse farm with an amazing view of the ocean. The house has 4 bedrooms and two bathrooms, and also a hot tub.
Today we visit a couple of familiar places and one we don't know at all. We've been up early the last two mornings, so today we'll leave at 9:00. First, we'll stop at an iconic mountain, famous from a TV show. Then we visit a black Icelandic church and seemingly end the day at a place where we can observe marine mammals. But that's not the end of the day, so read on......
In fact, there is a hidden gem on this peninsula, namely a natural geothermal hotspot, it's not even on the maps, which is a huge advantage because only a minimal number of people know about it, and we're going to go there for a swim. Cool :) I don't list the place and I don't add photos.
What is it about the south of Iceland that makes it so popular? Waterfalls, volcanoes, geysir and glacier.... Well, we have seen a few waterfalls, we have visited some volcanoes too, we won't see the geysir, on the other hand, the ones in America are bigger and better... That leaves us with the great Icelandic necessity, the glacier... But how to do it? Well, simply, there is a glacier on this peninsula too, and right on the volcano, ha, two in one. 😁 It's also the only glacier where there is a hiking trail and can be visited without a glacier guide, hopefully in cooler weather, when it's very hot the glacier is unstable, dangerous and therefore unfriendly. It's definitely not going to be an easy hike, we'll try to shorten it by car, but it still won't be easy and you'll definitely need those bearskins. Let's hope for good weather so we can have a great view besides the glacier. We will leave at 8am in the morning and return to our accommodation between 6-7pm.
If things don't work out for any reason, we will work out an alternative programme there is always something new to discover in Iceland.
As it is written above, at the end we are definitely going to do the hardest trek I have done in Iceland, I mean I haven't done it, I usually don't have time for full day treks, that's why I am going for the first time. The route is about 10 km in a shortened version, where we will steal about 5 km by car. The elevation gain is a respectable 800 meters, so the hike is extremely challenging. I rate it as the ultimate. Don't give up your trip for this date just because of this trek, whoever doesn't feel like it I will think of another program for him, but I think that slowly and carefully we will all climb the mountain.

Today we just have one last stop to see one of the waterfalls and then hurrah back to the airport, well, probably not hurrah, but it's time to go home. We'll leave at 8:30 in the morning.
I'll take you to the airport at 1pm. At 3 pm you have a departure flight.
You will land in Prague at 20:50.
