Today you will visit the capital of Madeira - Funchal. Funchal owes its name to the wild fennel (funcho in Portuguese), whose abundance in what is now the city inspired the Portuguese colonists.
Explore the hystorical part of the city, take a ride on the panoramic cable car, absorb the beautiful tropical gardens and views of the whole of Funchal, ride on the famous Madeiran sleigh, sample the delicious fruits at the local market and taste the traditional Madeiran alcoholic drink.
The cable car to the Monte district starts in a park on the waterfront in a place called Almirante Reis. The cable car runs over the roofs of the houses of the old town, crosses a deep valley and ends at the aforementioned Monte. You will have spectacular views of both the city and the Atlantic Ocean. The ride takes about 15 minutes.
This 7 hectare botanical garden contains extensive collections of local and exotic flora from different continents. You will discover thousands of plant species, oriental gardens, a beautiful lake where you will discover local flamingos and swans and much more. It is considered the most beautiful garden in Madeira and one of the 13 most beautiful botanical gardens in the world! At the same time, you will enjoy spectacular views. Simply put... It is an absolute paradise.
The Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte in Portuguese) is the main church of the Roman Catholic parish of Monte. It houses the remains of the last Emperor of Austria and King Charles I of Bohemia, who came to Funchal as an exile on 19 November 1921.
You can find it right under the church.
This handmade sledge appeared around 1850 and you won't find it anywhere else. Originally, it was a fast means of transport for people living in Monte do Funchal. The ride takes around 10 minutes, when you experience a nice little adrenaline rush. During the ride you can admire the surrounding houses and the approaching harbour. 2-3 people can sit in the sledge, with the sledge being fully driven by two guys (called Carreiros) who stand behind you. I really recommend this experience, you shouldn't miss it! (price is for 2 people)

To give you an idea: the sledge will take you here. There are various photographers along the way, so they will offer you printed photos for a nominal price. It's up to you whether you want to take them or not, we couldn't resist!

Mercado dos Lavradores
This market offers a wide range of fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, fish, local handicrafts and much more. The market was built in the 1930s and is known for its lively and colourful atmosphere. There is something for everyone.
I recommend buying some souvenirs here, especially the delicious walnut stuffed dates, I miss them so much! Along with the roasted chestnuts they used to sell in a small stall next to this market during Christmas...
Interesting fact: On the night of 23 December, it is traditional for locals to gather in the market and surrounding streets to sing Christmas songs, dance and drink in the nearby bars, which serve traditional drinks and especially traditional Carne de vinha d'alhos sandwiches.
Poncha is a traditional alcoholic drink based on the rum principle (Aguardente da Cana white rum), which is created by distilling fermented sugar cane juice. It is accompanied by honey or cane sugar and fruit - usually orange + lemon, but nowadays also strawberries, passion fruit, etc. You will find this drink at every turn, anyway here is a small recommendation for a very popular venture.
I also recommend trying the very popular and refreshing cocktail, called Nikita. It is a milkshake that consists of pineapple juice, vanilla, a small beer and a small glass of wine. It is available in almost all restaurants and you can choose either an alcoholic or non-alcoholic version.
You can end the day with a pleasant evening stroll through the harbour.
On the second day, the beauty of the eastern part of the island awaits you. You will experience your first trek (with the possibility of swimming), enjoy the waves crashing on the rocks literally under your feet, go to a small fortress with an amazing view, discover the old ruins of a former sugar mill, take pictures at the typical Madeiran houses (casas de colmo), and finally experience your first levée!
Be sure to have your camera ready on the way, because the journey will take you under the monumental airstrip!
Ponta de São Lourenço is a narrow peninsula, the easternmost point of Madeira. The colour of the peninsula changes with the seasons. In fact, it rains considerably less than the rest of Madeira and is also buffeted by strong winds from the ocean all year round. In winter and early spring, the peninsula is covered in lush green grass, while in summer and autumn the local landscape resembles semi-deserts and deserts (a kind of smaller Mars).

A small beach, about 60m long, awaits you here. This is the only naturally sandy beach in Madeira (the others have sand artificially imported from Africa or mainland Portugal). It is black fine lava sand, the sea is protected by a bay and you can have a snack in a small restaurant right next to the beach.
This viewpoint offers a breathtaking view of the Madeira coast. It is the ideal place to contemplate the Atlantic Ocean that bathes the island. It is known for the exceptional beauty of its surroundings. It is an idyllic setting, characterised by the harmony between the green mountains and the imposing cliffs.
It's easy to get to the viewpoint with your car, anyway the small parking lot tends to be full, so hang on for a while if necessary, it changes quite quickly. Parking is free.
Former fortress from the 18th century, now "just" a viewpoint. Here you will find ten small cannons of English origin, once used to defend against raiders. The views on this hill are breathtaking.
There is a small free car park.
This is a very peaceful place that takes you back to the past.
Sugar cane culture in Madeira dates back to the 15th century. The island became a major supplier of sugar to the whole of Europe.
The site consists of the ruins of old sugar cane mills that were developed there in the early days of the island's settlement process. There is also a small restaurant with an outdoor swimming pool, which is open during the high season.
Parking is free here.
This is a small town known especially for its typical Madeiran houses called casas de colmo, of which several dozen have been preserved.
The houses are built of wooden beams with straw roofs and their main characteristic is the "A" shape and the coloured doors or shutters. An interesting feature of these shepherd's huts is that they did not have extra solid foundations and could be easily dismantled and moved to another location.
Very pleasant environment. You can step into the houses and soak up the true Madeiran atmosphere. They also sell good poncha and other delicacies.
If you feel like it, you can also visit this smaller park with its various buildings and exhibits depicting Madeira's cultural traditions.
Excellent restaurant, which I visited myself during this trip. You can have a good lunch here.
This is both a nature reserve and a village, located in the middle of the laurel forest and consists of several restaurants, a gift shop and a trout farm. Next to one restaurant there is a small chapel and a small botanical garden.
From here, many people take the two most beautiful hikes along the levadas (depending on energy and time, you can do both or just one - description below)
PR11 - a very short easy route with breathtaking views. The route is about 3km long round trip.
If you arrive during fog or light rain, I still recommend going on it!

The route leads through the original Laurissilva laurel forest, a Unesco World Heritage Site. The route is about 11km long in one direction.

The 18-hole championship golf course is set in a pristine setting of coastal pines and subtropical vegetation.
At an altitude of almost 500m above sea level, you will enjoy dramatic views of the mountain panorama and the vast Atlantic Ocean. There is also a café with outdoor seating.
The Rabaçal area is one of the most visited places in Madeira for hiking and one of the main levadas. It is located where a flat and austere plateau with low vegetation gradually falls into deep valleys covered with native laurel forests and stretches about 20 km northwestwards to the ocean.
It is a very humid place where many watercourses originate, eventually joining to form Ribeira da Janela, the longest Madeira river.
There is a huge unpaid parking lot here, but in any case, I recommend going as soon as possible.

Levada do Risco - the route to one of the highest waterfalls in Madeira.
Levada das 25 Fontes - a route to a set of small waterfalls.
Levada do Risco is the shortest and most popular levada, leading to the largest local waterfalls. An easy route of approximately 4km (there and back). At the waterfalls, you can admire the local chaffinches, which are partly accustomed to flying to your palm for food. Levada das 25 Fontes is one of the most interesting and beautiful in Madeira, and also one of the most frequented. It leads to a lake in the middle of green forests, into which 25 small waterfalls fall. The route is approximately 5km long (there and back), it is a bit more challenging, there are many stairs, but from my point of view it's worth it! Also paid for €4.5.
Cascata dos Anjos is an impressive waterfall flowing down the cliff onto the narrow coastal road (a natural car wash) that runs underneath. So wear your swimsuit and hurry to get under the waterfall! Parking is quite hectic here, but I believe you will find a spot...
You shouldn't drive your car under the waterfall and beyond (it's closed due to falling rocks and irresponsible tourists), anyway we decided to take this road to Ponta do Sol and we don't regret it, it was worth it because you will pass through older tunnels and on the way to the last tunnel you will discover an ancient bridge - cross it after parking and head up, beautiful ocean views await you! (PLEASE - take this recommendation at your own risk, if you don't want to drive through, take the main road to Ponta do Sol and after parking, walk to the view from the other side)

A magical little town that you're sure to love! Thanks to the enclosed beach, you can take a comfortable swim, have a delicious ice cream and enjoy the incredible decorations all around the town around Christmas.
The free parking is located in the tunnel (you can see the tunnel right in front of you if you keep the beach on your right).
Excellent restaurant with spectacular views of the city and the ocean. I recommend having a nice dinner here before going to your accommodation.
Today you will enjoy the most famous and most popular trek in Madeira. It is a tourist route that falls into the main reasons to visit this island.
It starts at Pico do Areeiro (1818m), crosses Pico das Torres (1851m) and ends at Pico Ruivo (1862m). You will also pass through tunnels along the trail, so have a flashlight ready.
The PR1 route is one of the most difficult hiking routes, but it is also one of the most beautiful. And I guarantee you that the views you will get here will literally take your breath away! I recommend starting as early as possible, even before dawn, so that you can experience a colorful sunrise and a trail with fewer tourists.
The length of the route is about 5,5km one way (if you go there and back, please allow at least 10h).
Please check the weather before you go! It can be sunny in Funchal and the peaks may be in clouds/fog - there is a link to watch the webcams in the route description. (so be patient and change your itinerary if necessary).

After the trek, head back to your accommodation to rest and possibly head into town for a bite to eat.
If you're not into hiking, I urge you to at least reach this point, as this is where the iconic photos are taken.
If you do not take the whole PR1 route, there is a variation of the PR1.2 route, where you can reach Pico Ruivo from the other side by an easier route.
After the strenuous hiking of the previous day, you will have a much quieter day today. You will walk through the famous Fanal fairy-tale forest, see the photogenic rock formations in Ribeira da Janela, bathe in the natural lava pools in Porto Moniz, followed by the sandy black beach in Seixal, see a beautiful waterfall falling directly into the ocean, and then explore the picturesque town of São Vicente, famous for its lava caves.
Les Fanal is a truly magical place in Madeira, which is why it is often referred to as a fairy tale. It is located on a small plateau filled with waterlogged green meadows ideal for grazing cattle and ancient native laurel trees. So I recommend stopping at the free parking lot and really exploring this place, there are several hiking trails here as well.
Fanal is a popular spot, especially among photographers. It lies at an altitude of around 1,100 metres, which in Madeira is usually the limit of the clouds. These create a magical backdrop ideal for great photos.
This is a small village. Under this name is also hidden the longest river on the island (about 20 km), which is the most extensive and abundant watercourse in the interior of the island, in the middle of the mountains and here it flows into the ocean.
The main local attraction is several rock formations of volcanic origin that rise from the sea very close to the shore.
The tallest of these, Ilheus da Janela, measures over 30 metres.
These are natural pools with salt water formed by volcanic rocks. The swimming pool here offers visitors access to clean and crystalline water from the Atlantic Ocean. So you can take a dip here and soak up the local atmosphere with beautiful views of the ocean (more swimming may await you at the next point).
Smaller unpaid car parks are located nearby.
In Seixal, a coastal village, you will find a nice sandy black beach and hidden lakes. Don't be afraid to drive all the way down to the beach, there is a small parking lot, and if you don't fit, you'll have to wait or park on the road up the hill and walk down to the beach. There is also a restaurant here.
The view of the Véu da Noiva waterfall can be found on the way from Seixal to São Vicente. You can park your car at the small rest area and walk to the viewpoint with a terrace. Véu da Noiva translates as Bridal Veil - this is because the water falling from above resembles a flowing silk veil.
São Vicente is another beautiful town, which has been described as the most beautiful town in Madeira.
The biggest attraction here are the lava caves of tunnel-like nature, more than 700 metres long (Grutas de São Vicente).
The caves are only accessible with a guide, where you will be given a guided tour of the small volcanological museum and then take the elevator to the underground. You'll admire lava stalactites, tunnels and pools as you walk for about a kilometre. I recommend checking beforehand to see if they are accessible (they were closed for a long time in December 2023).
You can find a large unpaid parking lot above the town, or another smaller one by the ocean where there are many restaurants.

Today you will have a real adrenaline rush in the form of canyoning, followed by a well-deserved rest in another botanical garden above Funchal and a last swim in the ocean.
Canyoning is purely voluntary in this case, but it is suitable for complete beginners of all ages (I have had people - 55 years old - who have never experienced anything like this and are not active in any way).
The Epic Madeira company arranges both canyoning and coasteering and climbing for all categories (beginner/advanced/expert), so you can possibly choose anything else. You don't even need to know perfect English, they will explain and demonstrate everything if necessary. During the experience, they will even take photos and videos on your own mobile phone, which they will forward to you the next day (included in the price). They can either pick you up or you drive to the designated location yourself. They will also provide you with all the equipment - clothes, boots, gloves, helmets... The price includes insurance. You will go down waterfalls, jump into the water, enjoy nature and still laugh thanks to the guides! Because Madeira is truly the island of eternal spring, you can arrange this experience at any time, in any season. For example, we had this experience on Christmas Day and the guys took great care of us and we have memories to last a lifetime!

It is a very humid place where many watercourses originate, eventually joining to form Ribeira da Janela, the longest Madeira river.
There is a huge unpaid parking lot here, but in any case, I recommend going as soon as possible.

Cascata dos Anjos is an impressive waterfall flowing down the cliff onto the narrow coastal road (a natural car wash) that runs underneath. So wear your swimsuit and hurry to get under the waterfall! Parking is quite hectic here, but I believe you will find a spot...
You shouldn't drive your car under the waterfall and beyond (it's closed due to falling rocks and irresponsible tourists), anyway we decided to take this road to Ponta do Sol and we don't regret it, it was worth it because you will pass through older tunnels and on the way to the last tunnel you will discover an ancient bridge - cross it after parking and head up, beautiful ocean views await you! (PLEASE - take this recommendation at your own risk, if you don't want to drive through, take the main road to Ponta do Sol and after parking, walk to the view from the other side)

A magical little town that you're sure to love! Thanks to the enclosed beach, you can take a comfortable swim, have a delicious ice cream and enjoy the incredible decorations all around the town around Christmas.
The free parking is located in the tunnel (you can see the tunnel right in front of you if you keep the beach on your right).

Today you will enjoy the most famous and most popular trek in Madeira. It is a tourist route that falls into the main reasons to visit this island.
It starts at Pico do Areeiro (1818m), crosses Pico das Torres (1851m) and ends at Pico Ruivo (1862m). You will also pass through tunnels along the trail, so have a flashlight ready.
The PR1 route is one of the most difficult hiking routes, but it is also one of the most beautiful. And I guarantee you that the views you will get here will literally take your breath away! I recommend starting as early as possible, even before dawn, so that you can experience a colorful sunrise and a trail with fewer tourists.
The length of the route is about 5,5km one way (if you go there and back, please allow at least 10h).

So I recommend stopping at the free parking lot and really exploring this place, there are several hiking trails here as well.
Fanal is a popular spot, especially among photographers. It lies at an altitude of around 1,100 metres, which in Madeira is usually the limit of the clouds. These create a magical backdrop ideal for great photos.
This is a small village. Under this name is also hidden the longest river on the island (about 20 km), which is the most extensive and abundant watercourse in the interior of the island, in the middle of the mountains and here it flows into the ocean.
The main local attraction is several rock formations of volcanic origin that rise from the sea very close to the shore.
The tallest of these, Ilheus da Janela, measures over 30 metres.
These are natural pools with salt water formed by volcanic rocks. The swimming pool here offers visitors access to clean and crystalline water from the Atlantic Ocean. So you can take a dip here and soak up the local atmosphere with beautiful views of the ocean (more swimming may await you at the next point).
Smaller unpaid car parks are located nearby.
In Seixal, a coastal village, you will find a nice sandy black beach and hidden lakes. Don't be afraid to drive all the way down to the beach, there is a small parking lot, and if you don't fit, you'll have to wait or park on the road up the hill and walk down to the beach. There is also a restaurant here.
The view of the Véu da Noiva waterfall can be found on the way from Seixal to São Vicente. You can park your car at the small rest area and walk to the viewpoint with a terrace. Véu da Noiva translates as Bridal Veil - this is because the water falling from above resembles a flowing silk veil.
São Vicente is another beautiful town, which has been described as the most beautiful town in Madeira.
The biggest attraction here are the lava caves of tunnel-like nature, more than 700 metres long (Grutas de São Vicente).
The caves are only accessible with a guide, where you will be given a guided tour of the small volcanological museum and then take the elevator to the underground. You'll admire lava stalactites, tunnels and pools as you walk for about a kilometre. I recommend checking beforehand to see if they are accessible (they were closed for a long time in December 2023).
You can find a large unpaid parking lot above the town, or another smaller one by the ocean where there are many restaurants.

Today you will have a real adrenaline rush in the form of canyoning, followed by a well-deserved rest in another botanical garden above Funchal and a last swim in the ocean.
Canyoning is purely voluntary in this case, but it is suitable for complete beginners of all ages (I have had people - 55 years old - who have never experienced anything like this and are not active in any way).
The Epic Madeira company arranges both canyoning and coasteering and climbing for all categories (beginner/advanced/expert), so you can possibly choose anything else. You don't even need to know perfect English, they will explain and demonstrate everything if necessary. During the experience, they will even take photos and videos on your own mobile phone, which they will forward to you the next day (included in the price). They can either pick you up or you drive to the designated location yourself. They will also provide you with all the equipment - clothes, boots, gloves, helmets... The price includes insurance. You will go down waterfalls, jump into the water, enjoy nature and still laugh thanks to the guides! Because Madeira is truly the island of eternal spring, you can arrange this experience at any time, in any season. For example, we had this experience on Christmas Day and the guys took great care of us and we have memories to last a lifetime!

Upon arrival, head over to pick up your rental car, which will be your companion for the entire stay. Madeira is truly stunning, and unfortunately, you won't get to see those hidden gems without a car! After picking it up, head to your accommodation; depending on your schedule, you can go straight out to explore the streets of Funchal.

Since October 2024, everyone is required to pay an entrance fee for selected hiking trails and levadas due to the enormous number of visitors. As of 2026, the entrance fees have increased and it is mandatory to book a time slot!

Today you will visit the capital of Madeira - Funchal. Funchal owes its name to the wild fennel (funcho in Portuguese), whose abundance in what is now the city inspired the Portuguese colonists.
Explore the hystorical part of the city, take a ride on the panoramic cable car, absorb the beautiful tropical gardens and views of the whole of Funchal, ride on the famous Madeiran sleigh, sample the delicious fruits at the local market and taste the traditional Madeiran alcoholic drink.
The cable car to the Monte district starts in a park on the waterfront in a place called Almirante Reis. The cable car runs over the roofs of the houses of the old town, crosses a deep valley and ends at the aforementioned Monte. You will have spectacular views of both the city and the Atlantic Ocean. The ride takes about 15 minutes.
This 7 hectare botanical garden contains extensive collections of local and exotic flora from different continents. You will discover thousands of plant species, oriental gardens, a beautiful lake where you will discover local flamingos and swans and much more. It is considered the most beautiful garden in Madeira and one of the 13 most beautiful botanical gardens in the world! At the same time, you will enjoy spectacular views. Simply put... It is an absolute paradise.
The Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte in Portuguese) is the main church of the Roman Catholic parish of Monte. It houses the remains of the last Emperor of Austria and King Charles I of Bohemia, who came to Funchal as an exile on 19 November 1921.
You can find it right under the church.
This handmade sledge appeared around 1850 and you won't find it anywhere else. Originally, it was a fast means of transport for people living in Monte do Funchal. The ride takes around 10 minutes, when you experience a nice little adrenaline rush. During the ride you can admire the surrounding houses and the approaching harbour. 2-3 people can sit in the sledge, with the sledge being fully driven by two guys (called Carreiros) who stand behind you. I really recommend this experience, you shouldn't miss it! (price is for 2 people)

To give you an idea: the sledge will take you here. There are various photographers along the way, so they will offer you printed photos for a nominal price. It's up to you whether you want to take them or not, we couldn't resist!

Mercado dos Lavradores
This market offers a wide range of fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, fish, local handicrafts and much more. The market was built in the 1930s and is known for its lively and colourful atmosphere. There is something for everyone.
I recommend buying some souvenirs here, especially the delicious walnut stuffed dates, I miss them so much! Along with the roasted chestnuts they used to sell in a small stall next to this market during Christmas...
Interesting fact: On the night of 23 December, it is traditional for locals to gather in the market and surrounding streets to sing Christmas songs, dance and drink in the nearby bars, which serve traditional drinks and especially traditional Carne de vinha d'alhos sandwiches.
Poncha is a traditional alcoholic drink based on the rum principle (Aguardente da Cana white rum), which is created by distilling fermented sugar cane juice. It is accompanied by honey or cane sugar and fruit - usually orange + lemon, but nowadays also strawberries, passion fruit, etc. You will find this drink at every turn, anyway here is a small recommendation for a very popular venture.
I also recommend trying the very popular and refreshing cocktail, called Nikita. It is a milkshake that consists of pineapple juice, vanilla, a small beer and a small glass of wine. It is available in almost all restaurants and you can choose either an alcoholic or non-alcoholic version.
You can end the day with a pleasant evening stroll through the harbour.
On the second day, the beauty of the eastern part of the island awaits you. You will experience your first trek (with the possibility of swimming), enjoy the waves crashing on the rocks literally under your feet, go to a small fortress with an amazing view, discover the old ruins of a former sugar mill, take pictures at the typical Madeiran houses (casas de colmo), and finally experience your first levée!
Be sure to have your camera ready on the way, because the journey will take you under the monumental airstrip!
Ponta de São Lourenço is a narrow peninsula, the easternmost point of Madeira. The colour of the peninsula changes with the seasons. In fact, it rains considerably less than the rest of Madeira and is also buffeted by strong winds from the ocean all year round. In winter and early spring, the peninsula is covered in lush green grass, while in summer and autumn the local landscape resembles semi-deserts and deserts (a kind of smaller Mars).

A small beach, about 60m long, awaits you here. This is the only naturally sandy beach in Madeira (the others have sand artificially imported from Africa or mainland Portugal). It is black fine lava sand, the sea is protected by a bay and you can have a snack in a small restaurant right next to the beach.
This viewpoint offers a breathtaking view of the Madeira coast. It is the ideal place to contemplate the Atlantic Ocean that bathes the island. It is known for the exceptional beauty of its surroundings. It is an idyllic setting, characterised by the harmony between the green mountains and the imposing cliffs.
It's easy to get to the viewpoint with your car, anyway the small parking lot tends to be full, so hang on for a while if necessary, it changes quite quickly. Parking is free.
Former fortress from the 18th century, now "just" a viewpoint. Here you will find ten small cannons of English origin, once used to defend against raiders. The views on this hill are breathtaking.

This is a very peaceful place that takes you back to the past.
Sugar cane culture in Madeira dates back to the 15th century. The island became a major supplier of sugar to the whole of Europe.
The site consists of the ruins of old sugar cane mills that were developed there in the early days of the island's settlement process. There is also a small restaurant with an outdoor swimming pool, which is open during the high season.

This is a small town known especially for its typical Madeiran houses called casas de colmo, of which several dozen have been preserved.
The houses are built of wooden beams with straw roofs and their main characteristic is the "A" shape and the coloured doors or shutters. An interesting feature of these shepherd's huts is that they did not have extra solid foundations and could be easily dismantled and moved to another location.
Very pleasant environment. You can step into the houses and soak up the true Madeiran atmosphere. They also sell good poncha and other delicacies.
If you feel like it, you can also visit this smaller park with its various buildings and exhibits depicting Madeira's cultural traditions.

Upon arrival, head over to pick up your rental car, which will be your companion for the entire stay. Madeira is truly stunning, and unfortunately, you won't get to see those hidden gems without a car! After picking it up, head to your accommodation; depending on your schedule, you can go straight out to explore the streets of Funchal.
⚠️IMPORTANT: Most trails marked as PR require a reservation IN ADVANCE. The most popular routes often sell out well in advance, so be sure to book as early as possible. Entry is not possible without a reservation. Since October 2024, everyone is required to pay an entrance fee for selected hiking trails and levadas due to the enormous number of visitors. As of 2026, the entrance fees have increased and it is mandatory to book a time slot!
- The entrance fee is €4.5, or €3 with a licensed guide. For route PR1, there is a special fee of €10.5, or €7.5 with a licensed guide. Fines for non-payment are reported to be from €250 (links to official websites can be found in the trip introduction).
Today you will visit the capital of Madeira - Funchal. Funchal owes its name to the wild fennel (funcho in Portuguese), whose abundance in what is now the city inspired the Portuguese colonists.
Explore the hystorical part of the city, take a ride on the panoramic cable car, absorb the beautiful tropical gardens and views of the whole of Funchal, ride on the famous Madeiran sleigh, sample the delicious fruits at the local market and taste the traditional Madeiran alcoholic drink.
The cable car to the Monte district starts in a park on the waterfront in a place called Almirante Reis. The cable car runs over the roofs of the houses of the old town, crosses a deep valley and ends at the aforementioned Monte. You will have spectacular views of both the city and the Atlantic Ocean. The ride takes about 15 minutes.
This 7 hectare botanical garden contains extensive collections of local and exotic flora from different continents. You will discover thousands of plant species, oriental gardens, a beautiful lake where you will discover local flamingos and swans and much more. It is considered the most beautiful garden in Madeira and one of the 13 most beautiful botanical gardens in the world! At the same time, you will enjoy spectacular views. Simply put... It is an absolute paradise.
The Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte in Portuguese) is the main church of the Roman Catholic parish of Monte. It houses the remains of the last Emperor of Austria and King Charles I of Bohemia, who came to Funchal as an exile on 19 November 1921.
You can find it right under the church.
This handmade sledge appeared around 1850 and you won't find it anywhere else. Originally, it was a fast means of transport for people living in Monte do Funchal. The ride takes around 10 minutes, when you experience a nice little adrenaline rush. During the ride you can admire the surrounding houses and the approaching harbour. 2-3 people can sit in the sledge, with the sledge being fully driven by two guys (called Carreiros) who stand behind you. I really recommend this experience, you shouldn't miss it! (price is for 2 people)

To give you an idea: the sledge will take you here. There are various photographers along the way, so they will offer you printed photos for a nominal price. It's up to you whether you want to take them or not, we couldn't resist!
After the ride, you will walk back to the centre.
Mercado dos Lavradores
This market offers a wide range of fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, fish, local handicrafts and much more. The market was built in the 1930s and is known for its lively and colourful atmosphere. There is something for everyone.
I recommend buying some souvenirs here, especially the delicious walnut stuffed dates, I miss them so much! Along with the roasted chestnuts they used to sell in a small stall next to this market during Christmas...
Interesting fact: On the night of 23 December, it is traditional for locals to gather in the market and surrounding streets to sing Christmas songs, dance and drink in the nearby bars, which serve traditional drinks and especially traditional Carne de vinha d'alhos sandwiches.
Poncha is a traditional alcoholic drink based on the rum principle (Aguardente da Cana white rum), which is created by distilling fermented sugar cane juice. It is accompanied by honey or cane sugar and fruit - usually orange + lemon, but nowadays also strawberries, passion fruit, etc. You will find this drink at every turn, anyway here is a small recommendation for a very popular venture.
I also recommend trying the very popular and refreshing cocktail, called Nikita. It is a milkshake that consists of pineapple juice, vanilla, a small beer and a small glass of wine. It is available in almost all restaurants and you can choose either an alcoholic or non-alcoholic version.
You can end the day with a pleasant evening stroll through the harbour.
On the second day, the beauty of the eastern part of the island awaits you. You will experience your first trek (with the possibility of swimming), enjoy the waves crashing on the rocks literally under your feet, go to a small fortress with an amazing view, discover the old ruins of a former sugar mill, take pictures at the typical Madeiran houses (casas de colmo), and finally experience your first levée!
Be sure to have your camera ready on the way, because the journey will take you under the monumental airstrip!
Ponta de São Lourenço is a narrow peninsula, the easternmost point of Madeira. The colour of the peninsula changes with the seasons. In fact, it rains considerably less than the rest of Madeira and is also buffeted by strong winds from the ocean all year round. In winter and early spring, the peninsula is covered in lush green grass, while in summer and autumn the local landscape resembles semi-deserts and deserts (a kind of smaller Mars).

A small beach awaits you here, next to which there is a seating area with small refreshments. You can relax here for a while.
A small beach, about 60m long, awaits you here. This is the only naturally sandy beach in Madeira (the others have sand artificially imported from Africa or mainland Portugal). It is black fine lava sand, the sea is protected by a bay and you can have a snack in a small restaurant right next to the beach.
This viewpoint offers a breathtaking view of the Madeira coast. It is the ideal place to contemplate the Atlantic Ocean that bathes the island. It is known for the exceptional beauty of its surroundings. It is an idyllic setting, characterised by the harmony between the green mountains and the imposing cliffs.
It's easy to get to the viewpoint with your car, anyway the small parking lot tends to be full, so hang on for a while if necessary, it changes quite quickly. Parking is free.
Former fortress from the 18th century, now "just" a viewpoint. Here you will find ten small cannons of English origin, once used to defend against raiders. The views on this hill are breathtaking.
There is a small free car park.
This is a very peaceful place that takes you back to the past.
Sugar cane culture in Madeira dates back to the 15th century. The island became a major supplier of sugar to the whole of Europe.
The site consists of the ruins of old sugar cane mills that were developed there in the early days of the island's settlement process. There is also a small restaurant with an outdoor swimming pool, which is open during the high season.
Parking is free here.
This is a small town known especially for its typical Madeiran houses called casas de colmo, of which several dozen have been preserved.
The houses are built of wooden beams with straw roofs and their main characteristic is the "A" shape and the coloured doors or shutters. An interesting feature of these shepherd's huts is that they did not have extra solid foundations and could be easily dismantled and moved to another location.
Very pleasant environment. You can step into the houses and soak up the true Madeiran atmosphere. They also sell good poncha and other delicacies.
If you feel like it, you can also visit this smaller park with its various buildings and exhibits depicting Madeira's cultural traditions.
Excellent restaurant, which I visited myself during this trip. You can have a good lunch here.
This is both a nature reserve and a village, located in the middle of the laurel forest and consists of several restaurants, a gift shop and a trout farm. Next to one restaurant there is a small chapel and a small botanical garden.
From here, many people take the two most beautiful hikes along the levadas (depending on energy and time, you can do both or just one - description below)
PR11 - a very short easy route with breathtaking views. The route is about 3km long round trip.
If you arrive during fog or light rain, I still recommend going on it!

The route leads through the original Laurissilva laurel forest, a Unesco World Heritage Site. The route is about 11km long in one direction.

The 18-hole championship golf course is set in a pristine setting of coastal pines and subtropical vegetation.
At an altitude of almost 500m above sea level, you will enjoy dramatic views of the mountain panorama and the vast Atlantic Ocean. There is also a café with outdoor seating.
The Rabaçal area is one of the most visited places in Madeira for hiking and one of the main levadas. It is located where a flat and austere plateau with low vegetation gradually falls into deep valleys covered with native laurel forests and stretches about 20 km northwestwards to the ocean.
It is a very humid place where many watercourses originate, eventually joining to form Ribeira da Janela, the longest Madeira river.
There is a huge unpaid parking lot here, but in any case, I recommend going as soon as possible.

Levada do Risco - the route to one of the highest waterfalls in Madeira.
Levada das 25 Fontes - a route to a set of small waterfalls.
Levada do Risco is the shortest and most popular levada, leading to the largest local waterfalls. An easy route of approximately 4km (there and back). At the waterfalls, you can admire the local chaffinches, which are partly accustomed to flying to your palm for food. Levada das 25 Fontes is one of the most interesting and beautiful in Madeira, and also one of the most frequented. It leads to a lake in the middle of green forests, into which 25 small waterfalls fall. The route is approximately 5km long (there and back), it is a bit more challenging, there are many stairs, but from my point of view it's worth it! Also paid for €4.5.
Cascata dos Anjos is an impressive waterfall flowing down the cliff onto the narrow coastal road (a natural car wash) that runs underneath. So wear your swimsuit and hurry to get under the waterfall! Parking is quite hectic here, but I believe you will find a spot...
You shouldn't drive your car under the waterfall and beyond (it's closed due to falling rocks and irresponsible tourists), anyway we decided to take this road to Ponta do Sol and we don't regret it, it was worth it because you will pass through older tunnels and on the way to the last tunnel you will discover an ancient bridge - cross it after parking and head up, beautiful ocean views await you! (PLEASE - take this recommendation at your own risk, if you don't want to drive through, take the main road to Ponta do Sol and after parking, walk to the view from the other side)

A magical little town that you're sure to love! Thanks to the enclosed beach, you can take a comfortable swim, have a delicious ice cream and enjoy the incredible decorations all around the town around Christmas.
The free parking is located in the tunnel (you can see the tunnel right in front of you if you keep the beach on your right).

Today you will enjoy the most famous and most popular trek in Madeira. It is a tourist route that falls into the main reasons to visit this island.
It starts at Pico do Areeiro (1818m), crosses Pico das Torres (1851m) and ends at Pico Ruivo (1862m). You will also pass through tunnels along the trail, so have a flashlight ready.
The PR1 route is one of the most difficult hiking routes, but it is also one of the most beautiful. And I guarantee you that the views you will get here will literally take your breath away! I recommend starting as early as possible, even before dawn, so that you can experience a colorful sunrise and a trail with fewer tourists.
The length of the route is about 5,5km one way (if you go there and back, please allow at least 10h).
Please check the weather before you go! It can be sunny in Funchal and the peaks may be in clouds/fog - there is a link to watch the webcams in the route description. (so be patient and change your itinerary if necessary).

After the trek, head back to your accommodation to rest and possibly head into town for a bite to eat.
If you're not into hiking, I urge you to at least reach this point, as this is where the iconic photos are taken.
If you do not take the whole PR1 route, there is a variation of the PR1.2 route, where you can reach Pico Ruivo from the other side by an easier route.
After the strenuous hiking of the previous day, you will have a much quieter day today. You will walk through the famous Fanal fairy-tale forest, see the photogenic rock formations in Ribeira da Janela, bathe in the natural lava pools in Porto Moniz, followed by the sandy black beach in Seixal, see a beautiful waterfall falling directly into the ocean, and then explore the picturesque town of São Vicente, famous for its lava caves.
Les Fanal is a truly magical place in Madeira, which is why it is often referred to as a fairy tale. It is located on a small plateau filled with waterlogged green meadows ideal for grazing cattle and ancient native laurel trees. So I recommend stopping at the free parking lot and really exploring this place, there are several hiking trails here as well.
Fanal is a popular spot, especially among photographers. It lies at an altitude of around 1,100 metres, which in Madeira is usually the limit of the clouds. These create a magical backdrop ideal for great photos.
This is a small village. Under this name is also hidden the longest river on the island (about 20 km), which is the most extensive and abundant watercourse in the interior of the island, in the middle of the mountains and here it flows into the ocean.
The main local attraction is several rock formations of volcanic origin that rise from the sea very close to the shore.
The tallest of these, Ilheus da Janela, measures over 30 metres.
These are natural pools with salt water formed by volcanic rocks. The swimming pool here offers visitors access to clean and crystalline water from the Atlantic Ocean. So you can take a dip here and soak up the local atmosphere with beautiful views of the ocean (more swimming may await you at the next point).
Smaller unpaid car parks are located nearby.
In Seixal, a coastal village, you will find a nice sandy black beach and hidden lakes. Don't be afraid to drive all the way down to the beach, there is a small parking lot, and if you don't fit, you'll have to wait or park on the road up the hill and walk down to the beach. There is also a restaurant here.
The view of the Véu da Noiva waterfall can be found on the way from Seixal to São Vicente. You can park your car at the small rest area and walk to the viewpoint with a terrace. Véu da Noiva translates as Bridal Veil - this is because the water falling from above resembles a flowing silk veil.
São Vicente is another beautiful town, which has been described as the most beautiful town in Madeira.
The biggest attraction here are the lava caves of tunnel-like nature, more than 700 metres long (Grutas de São Vicente).
The caves are only accessible with a guide, where you will be given a guided tour of the small volcanological museum and then take the elevator to the underground. You'll admire lava stalactites, tunnels and pools as you walk for about a kilometre. I recommend checking beforehand to see if they are accessible (they were closed for a long time in December 2023).
You can find a large unpaid parking lot above the town, or another smaller one by the ocean where there are many restaurants.

Today you will have a real adrenaline rush in the form of canyoning, followed by a well-deserved rest in another botanical garden above Funchal and a last swim in the ocean.
Canyoning is purely voluntary in this case, but it is suitable for complete beginners of all ages (I have had people - 55 years old - who have never experienced anything like this and are not active in any way).
