And there is plenty to look forward to! Madeira is truly diverse, and I don't think I've encountered a landscape that changes as often anywhere else on my travels. From the arid peninsula in the east, through the majestic mountain peaks in the heart of the island, the mysterious Fanal forest and countless waterfalls, to breathtaking levadas. It's not for nothing that it's known as the island of eternal spring; you can head here for beautiful weather all year round. So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and let's go!

Welcome to Madeira! Your big adventure begins! First of all, pick up your rental car at the airport; the whole process shouldn't take long. Once you're done, you can head to your accommodation for the night in Funchal; the drive will take you less than half an hour.
⚠️IMPORTANT: For most trails marked as PR, booking your entry IN ADVANCE is required. The most popular routes often sell out well in advance, so be sure to purchase and book as soon as possible. Entry is not possible without a reservation.

Parking in the city is a bit of a struggle. If you can't park directly at the apartment, you can try a guarded parking lot a little away from the center. It costs €2.5 per day and its location is great.

Funchal is the largest city on the island and undoubtedly the center of all tourist activity. Your trip is primarily about active relaxation in nature, but if you have energy and a desire to go to the city along the way, I'm adding a few tips on what not to miss.
Among the most famous places is the local botanical garden. It contains a huge collection of exotic plants and, as a bonus, offers a beautiful view of the city and the ocean below.
The historical dominant of the city is undoubtedly the Sé Cathedral from the 15th century, which is known for its unique wooden roof.
A popular stop is also the typically yellow historical São Tiago fortress on the coast. Currently, it provides a base for modern art and offers a beautiful view of the sea.
Another interesting feature is the statue of the most famous Madeiran native - Cristiano Ronaldo. The locals are literally obsessed with him, and in Funchal you will find many places named after him. Whether it's his museum with trophies, a training center, a hotel or even the entire airport. And at the statue, you can guess where fans (and female fans) like to touch him the most.
Funchal is also typical for year-round sliding down the hilly streets on wicker sledges. For a few euros, two uniformed tobogganers will take you down the hill from Monte back to the city. It's definitely an experience you won't find just anywhere!
And last but not least, you can taste the famous Madeira wine at one of the many wineries. Similar to port wine, it is made by adding distilled alcohol during fermentation, which stops fermentation and preserves the sugars.
🔍 Fun fact: Originally, the production of Madeira wine originated in the 15th century during voyages of discovery to America. The island served as a stop on the long journey and the wine needed to be preserved so that it would not spoil in the heat on the long journey. This was achieved by adding pure alcohol.
You will also spend the following night in the city, so if any of the activities appeal to you, but you don't have enough time, feel free to leave it for tomorrow.
In the morning you'll climb the highest mountain on the island and enjoy breathtaking views along the route. In the afternoon, you'll definitely have time to explore Funchal further.
Good morning! I hope you slept well, because you're about to hike to the highest point on the island! But don't worry, it's not an extremely difficult hike, you'll save a good part of it by car. Even so, it's my favorite part of the island. So let's go! ⛰️
It's worth getting up early and heading out early, there's only one parking option at the top and its capacity can fill up quickly during the day. After parking, you can refresh yourself with coffee in the local cafe and set off on your way. ☕
Pico do Arieiro is the second highest point on the island and the path from it to Pico Ruivo is considered the most panoramic in all of Madeira. So get your camera ready! 📷
You have about 11 kilometers ahead of you along a narrow path across mountain ridges, full of tunnels, steep slopes and, above all, views in all directions. You will go up and down, from one valley to another and the panoramas will change with every kilometer. If the weather is good, you will feel like you are in Avatar! 😶🌫️
It is worth taking your time and setting aside a large part of the day for the hike. It's not a lot of kilometers, but the path is difficult and progress is surprisingly slow. And besides, it would be a shame to be rushed by time in such a beautiful environment. ⌚

Pico Ruivo is the highest mountain on the island, rising to 1862 m above sea level. This is the main destination of your trip today, so enjoy the well-deserved views of the surrounding area to the full. And if you're as lucky as we are, the mountain will reward you with a royal spectacle in the form of an inversion. ⛰️
A little below the peak there is a mountain hut where you can buy a little something for extra money. But you have to take into account the mountain surcharge. 🤑
The Coral beer, which comes from a brewery right on the island, is worth a try. 🍻
After the hike, all that's left is to transfer back to Funchal, where, depending on your mood, you can visit places you didn't manage to see yesterday.

In the morning you'll drive to the seat of Encumeada, a journey of about 40 minutes. From there there are several different routes around the area, you can choose the right one depending on your mood and energy level. All of them are beautiful and you won't go wrong with any of them!
There are several tunnels of varying lengths along the route, the larger ones are almost a kilometre long. So definitely don't forget your headlamp. And since you'll also encounter some beautiful waterfalls, feel free to pack a swimsuit. But I must warn you, the water is icy! 🥶
📌 Infocoute: Levadas are a specific type of irrigation canal typical of Madeira. They began to appear on the island in the 15th century, when Portuguese settlers discovered that the climatically favourable south of the island did not have enough water for agriculture. Over the years, they created over 800 km of main canals and 2 300 km of secondary canals. The island is therefore riddled with them through and through. Because of the island's mountainous nature, many tunnels and bridges had to be built. And all of this can be explored on foot these days. 💦
P.S. Walking along the levadas has one big advantage. By having to transport water over a large distance with little difference in elevation, it can't afford to lead at too great an incline. That's why most of the way you'll be on a nice straight stretch. And don't be alarmed, maps.cz can't handle measuring the elevation profile in tunnels and often show extreme elevation changes that aren't really there. 😊

There is a nice souvenir shop opposite the car park, which also serves as a bar and restaurant. In addition to delicious pizza, you can try two typical Madeira drinks. And I guarantee you won't find such an unusual combination anywhere else in the world. 🍾
A relatively normal combination is offered by the 'poncha', a drink with a sweet and fresh taste. It is made from a rum-like sugar cane spirit, fresh citrus juice and honey. It is traditionally stirred with a wooden whisk called a caralhinho and is very good. 😋
A more unconventional option is offered by 'Nikita'. This is made up of seemingly incompatible ingredients. Beer, white wine, pineapple juice and vanilla ice cream (!) are added to the cocktail 😱 All of this is poured into a blender and mixed thoroughly to create a smooth and frothy drink. Sounds scary, but give a nicita a chance. We were skeptical at first too, but we loved the taste of it! 🍹

From Encumeada, it's about a 40-minute drive to the town of Porto Moniz. There are plenty of parking spaces in the town, but unfortunately, most of them are paid.
Porto Moniz is a small town famous for its natural lava pools. These are filled with beautifully clear seawater, but are also protected from the wild waters of the ocean. It offers one of the best swimming spots on the island. 🏝️
Entry to the most famous ones is charged at €3 per person and they are open from 9am to 7pm every day when the waves are not too big. But there are also places nearby where you can swim for free.
In the morning, you'll see probably the most famous waterfalls on the island - 25 fountains and Risco. Then head to the Druidic forest of Fanal and wash away your tiredness in the lava pools right in Porto Moniz
Today will be marked by famous tourist attractions - you can find the Risco waterfall and 25 fountains in every tourist guide. And their easy accessibility is reflected in the number of people heading here. But if you head out early, you can enjoy these places for yourself. And once you're a little off the main route, you'll find beautiful places without people. 😎
The trails to the waterfalls lead again along beautiful levadas. You can either just go through both falls and come back, or go around the whole circuit. I highly recommend the longer option, it is beautiful and its length deters most tourists heading to this destination.

On the route you will meet the most famous place in Madeira - 25 fountains. The trail leads naturally down a left-hand path, at the end of which you will find a beautiful lake in the rock, into which 25 different springs flow. It's a very pretty sight, and if you're hardy enough, you can take a dip in it. 🏊♀️
The last stop today is the incredibly photogenic Fanal laurel forest. 🍃🍂
Especially if you have fog, which is more than usual in this place the forest has a truly magical atmosphere. It's as if you've suddenly found yourself in a druidic forest straight out of the Asterix comics. 🧙♂️
The entire Laurel Forest area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which just goes to show what a unique place it is. Some of the trees are up to 600 years old and their twisted and moss-covered branches offer a breathtaking spectacle. 🌳🌳
The parking lot is located right at the beginning of the forest, which you can then wander around as the mood takes you.

After moving to the east of the island, a new landscape opens up before you, the arid São Lourenco Peninsula with its cliffs. And along the way, you can stop in beautiful Santana.
The small town of Santana on the northeast coast of the island is famous for its traditional triangular houses Casas de colmo. Dozens of these have been preserved and have become one of the symbols of Madeira. 🏡
It's worth just walking around the town and soaking up the atmosphere, or stopping into one of the many cafes for a bite to eat. 😋
🔎 Interesting Fact: These original shepherd's huts did not have extra strong foundations and could easily be dismantled and moved to another location after the grass was grazed by cattle.
Your tourist destination for today is São Lourenço Peninsula. Its crossing is easy but still rewards you with beautiful views of the surrounding cliffs. 🪸
The landscape is again completely different compared to other parts of the island, Madeira never ceased to surprise me even after many days.
A short distance before the easternmost point of the island, there is a created oasis with a bar and restaurant where you can refresh yourself. 🌭
And it's definitely worth hiking up the hill above the restaurant.

Today's adventure will take you along the coastal path along the cliffs to the village of Porto da Cruz
The last hike of your trip takes you to a beautiful trail on the edge of the cliffs called Veredo Boca do Risco. 🪨
On the way, you'll get spectacular views of the rough sea below you, the beautifully blooming surroundings and the peninsula behind you that you explored yesterday. 🏝️
The road winds along the edge of the cliffs all the way through relatively easy terrain. Unfortunately it is not a loop, so you have to take the same route there and back. But at least you can turn around at any point along the way and adjust the length of the route as you go. ️

The trail leads naturally down a left-hand path, at the end of which you will find a beautiful lake in the rock, into which 25 different springs flow. It's a very pretty sight, and if you're hardy enough, you can take a dip in it. 🏊♀️
The last stop today is the incredibly photogenic Fanal laurel forest. 🍃🍂
Especially if you have fog, which is more than usual in this place the forest has a truly magical atmosphere. It's as if you've suddenly found yourself in a druidic forest straight out of the Asterix comics. 🧙♂️
The entire Laurel Forest area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which just goes to show what a unique place it is. Some of the trees are up to 600 years old and their twisted and moss-covered branches offer a breathtaking spectacle. 🌳🌳

After moving to the east of the island, a new landscape opens up before you, the arid São Lourenco Peninsula with its cliffs. And along the way, you can stop in beautiful Santana.
The small town of Santana on the northeast coast of the island is famous for its traditional triangular houses Casas de colmo. Dozens of these have been preserved and have become one of the symbols of Madeira. 🏡
It's worth just walking around the town and soaking up the atmosphere, or stopping into one of the many cafes for a bite to eat. 😋
🔎 Interesting Fact: These original shepherd's huts did not have extra strong foundations and could easily be dismantled and moved to another location after the grass was grazed by cattle.
Your tourist destination for today is São Lourenço Peninsula. Its crossing is easy but still rewards you with beautiful views of the surrounding cliffs. 🪸
The landscape is again completely different compared to other parts of the island, Madeira never ceased to surprise me even after many days.
A short distance before the easternmost point of the island, there is a created oasis with a bar and restaurant where you can refresh yourself. 🌭
And it's definitely worth hiking up the hill above the restaurant.

Today's adventure will take you along the coastal path along the cliffs to the village of Porto da Cruz
The last hike of your trip takes you to a beautiful trail on the edge of the cliffs called Veredo Boca do Risco. 🪨
On the way, you'll get spectacular views of the rough sea below you, the beautifully blooming surroundings and the peninsula behind you that you explored yesterday. 🏝️
The road winds along the edge of the cliffs all the way through relatively easy terrain. Unfortunately it is not a loop, so you have to take the same route there and back. But at least you can turn around at any point along the way and adjust the length of the route as you go. ️

Hi traveler! Welcome to the beautiful Portuguese island of Madeira. Over these 7 busy days, I'll show you the most beautiful spots I discovered while wandering around the island. And there is plenty to look forward to! Madeira is truly diverse, and I don't think I've encountered a landscape that changes as often anywhere else on my travels. From the arid peninsula in the east, through the majestic mountain peaks in the heart of the island, the mysterious Fanal forest and countless waterfalls, to breathtaking levadas. It's not for nothing that it's known as the island of eternal spring; you can head here for beautiful weather all year round. So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and let's go!

Welcome to Madeira! Your big adventure begins! First of all, pick up your rental car at the airport; the whole process shouldn't take long. Once you're done, you can head to your accommodation for the night in Funchal; the drive will take you less than half an hour.
⚠️IMPORTANT: For most trails marked as PR, booking your entry IN ADVANCE is required. The most popular routes often sell out well in advance, so be sure to purchase and book as soon as possible. Entry is not possible without a reservation.

Parking in the city is a bit of a struggle. If you can't park directly at the apartment, you can try a guarded parking lot a little away from the center. It costs €2.5 per day and its location is great.

Funchal is the largest city on the island and undoubtedly the center of all tourist activity. Your trip is primarily about active relaxation in nature, but if you have energy and a desire to go to the city along the way, I'm adding a few tips on what not to miss.
Among the most famous places is the local botanical garden. It contains a huge collection of exotic plants and, as a bonus, offers a beautiful view of the city and the ocean below.
The historical dominant of the city is undoubtedly the Sé Cathedral from the 15th century, which is known for its unique wooden roof.
A popular stop is also the typically yellow historical São Tiago fortress on the coast. Currently, it provides a base for modern art and offers a beautiful view of the sea.
Another interesting feature is the statue of the most famous Madeiran native - Cristiano Ronaldo. The locals are literally obsessed with him, and in Funchal you will find many places named after him. Whether it's his museum with trophies, a training center, a hotel or even the entire airport. And at the statue, you can guess where fans (and female fans) like to touch him the most.
Funchal is also typical for year-round sliding down the hilly streets on wicker sledges. For a few euros, two uniformed tobogganers will take you down the hill from Monte back to the city. It's definitely an experience you won't find just anywhere!
And last but not least, you can taste the famous Madeira wine at one of the many wineries. Similar to port wine, it is made by adding distilled alcohol during fermentation, which stops fermentation and preserves the sugars.
🔍 Fun fact: Originally, the production of Madeira wine originated in the 15th century during voyages of discovery to America. The island served as a stop on the long journey and the wine needed to be preserved so that it would not spoil in the heat on the long journey. This was achieved by adding pure alcohol.
You will also spend the following night in the city, so if any of the activities appeal to you, but you don't have enough time, feel free to leave it for tomorrow.
In the morning you'll climb the highest mountain on the island and enjoy breathtaking views along the route. In the afternoon, you'll definitely have time to explore Funchal further.
Good morning! I hope you slept well, because you're about to hike to the highest point on the island! But don't worry, it's not an extremely difficult hike, you'll save a good part of it by car. Even so, it's my favorite part of the island. So let's go! ⛰️
It's worth getting up early and heading out early, there's only one parking option at the top and its capacity can fill up quickly during the day. After parking, you can refresh yourself with coffee in the local cafe and set off on your way. ☕
Pico do Arieiro is the second highest point on the island and the path from it to Pico Ruivo is considered the most panoramic in all of Madeira. So get your camera ready! 📷
You have about 11 kilometers ahead of you along a narrow path across mountain ridges, full of tunnels, steep slopes and, above all, views in all directions. You will go up and down, from one valley to another and the panoramas will change with every kilometer. If the weather is good, you will feel like you are in Avatar! 😶🌫️
It is worth taking your time and setting aside a large part of the day for the hike. It's not a lot of kilometers, but the path is difficult and progress is surprisingly slow. And besides, it would be a shame to be rushed by time in such a beautiful environment. ⌚

Pico Ruivo is the highest mountain on the island, rising to 1862 m above sea level. This is the main destination of your trip today, so enjoy the well-deserved views of the surrounding area to the full. And if you're as lucky as we are, the mountain will reward you with a royal spectacle in the form of an inversion. ⛰️
A little below the peak there is a mountain hut where you can buy a little something for extra money. But you have to take into account the mountain surcharge. 🤑
The Coral beer, which comes from a brewery right on the island, is worth a try. 🍻
After the hike, all that's left is to transfer back to Funchal, where, depending on your mood, you can visit places you didn't manage to see yesterday.

In the morning you'll drive to the seat of Encumeada, a journey of about 40 minutes. From there there are several different routes around the area, you can choose the right one depending on your mood and energy level. All of them are beautiful and you won't go wrong with any of them!
There are several tunnels of varying lengths along the route, the larger ones are almost a kilometre long. So definitely don't forget your headlamp. And since you'll also encounter some beautiful waterfalls, feel free to pack a swimsuit. But I must warn you, the water is icy! 🥶
📌 Infocoute: Levadas are a specific type of irrigation canal typical of Madeira. They began to appear on the island in the 15th century, when Portuguese settlers discovered that the climatically favourable south of the island did not have enough water for agriculture. Over the years, they created over 800 km of main canals and 2 300 km of secondary canals. The island is therefore riddled with them through and through. Because of the island's mountainous nature, many tunnels and bridges had to be built. And all of this can be explored on foot these days. 💦
P.S. Walking along the levadas has one big advantage. By having to transport water over a large distance with little difference in elevation, it can't afford to lead at too great an incline. That's why most of the way you'll be on a nice straight stretch. And don't be alarmed, maps.cz can't handle measuring the elevation profile in tunnels and often show extreme elevation changes that aren't really there. 😊

There is a nice souvenir shop opposite the car park, which also serves as a bar and restaurant. In addition to delicious pizza, you can try two typical Madeira drinks. And I guarantee you won't find such an unusual combination anywhere else in the world. 🍾
A relatively normal combination is offered by the 'poncha', a drink with a sweet and fresh taste. It is made from a rum-like sugar cane spirit, fresh citrus juice and honey. It is traditionally stirred with a wooden whisk called a caralhinho and is very good. 😋
A more unconventional option is offered by 'Nikita'. This is made up of seemingly incompatible ingredients. Beer, white wine, pineapple juice and vanilla ice cream (!) are added to the cocktail 😱 All of this is poured into a blender and mixed thoroughly to create a smooth and frothy drink. Sounds scary, but give a nicita a chance. We were skeptical at first too, but we loved the taste of it! 🍹
🔎 Fun fact: The drink was named after the song Nikita by Elton John.
From Encumeada, it's about a 40-minute drive to the town of Porto Moniz. There are plenty of parking spaces in the town, but unfortunately, most of them are paid.
Porto Moniz is a small town famous for its natural lava pools. These are filled with beautifully clear seawater, but are also protected from the wild waters of the ocean. It offers one of the best swimming spots on the island. 🏝️
Entry to the most famous ones is charged at €3 per person and they are open from 9am to 7pm every day when the waves are not too big. But there are also places nearby where you can swim for free.
In the morning, you'll see probably the most famous waterfalls on the island - 25 fountains and Risco. Then head to the Druidic forest of Fanal and wash away your tiredness in the lava pools right in Porto Moniz
Today will be marked by famous tourist attractions - you can find the Risco waterfall and 25 fountains in every tourist guide. And their easy accessibility is reflected in the number of people heading here. But if you head out early, you can enjoy these places for yourself. And once you're a little off the main route, you'll find beautiful places without people. 😎
The trails to the waterfalls lead again along beautiful levadas. You can either just go through both falls and come back, or go around the whole circuit. I highly recommend the longer option, it is beautiful and its length deters most tourists heading to this destination.

There are several tunnels of varying lengths along the route, the larger ones are almost a kilometre long. So definitely don't forget your headlamp. And since you'll also encounter some beautiful waterfalls, feel free to pack a swimsuit. But I must warn you, the water is icy! 🥶
📌 Infocoute: Levadas are a specific type of irrigation canal typical of Madeira. They began to appear on the island in the 15th century, when Portuguese settlers discovered that the climatically favourable south of the island did not have enough water for agriculture. Over the years, they created over 800 km of main canals and 2 300 km of secondary canals. The island is therefore riddled with them through and through. Because of the island's mountainous nature, many tunnels and bridges had to be built. And all of this can be explored on foot these days. 💦
P.S. Walking along the levadas has one big advantage. By having to transport water over a large distance with little difference in elevation, it can't afford to lead at too great an incline. That's why most of the way you'll be on a nice straight stretch. And don't be alarmed, maps.cz can't handle measuring the elevation profile in tunnels and often show extreme elevation changes that aren't really there. 😊

There is a nice souvenir shop opposite the car park, which also serves as a bar and restaurant. In addition to delicious pizza, you can try two typical Madeira drinks. And I guarantee you won't find such an unusual combination anywhere else in the world. 🍾
A relatively normal combination is offered by the 'poncha', a drink with a sweet and fresh taste. It is made from a rum-like sugar cane spirit, fresh citrus juice and honey. It is traditionally stirred with a wooden whisk called a caralhinho and is very good. 😋
A more unconventional option is offered by 'Nikita'. This is made up of seemingly incompatible ingredients. Beer, white wine, pineapple juice and vanilla ice cream (!) are added to the cocktail 😱 All of this is poured into a blender and mixed thoroughly to create a smooth and frothy drink. Sounds scary, but give a nicita a chance. We were skeptical at first too, but we loved the taste of it! 🍹

From Encumeada, it's about a 40-minute drive to the town of Porto Moniz. There are plenty of parking spaces in the town, but unfortunately, most of them are paid.
Porto Moniz is a small town famous for its natural lava pools. These are filled with beautifully clear seawater, but are also protected from the wild waters of the ocean. It offers one of the best swimming spots on the island. 🏝️
Entry to the most famous ones is charged at €3 per person and they are open from 9am to 7pm every day when the waves are not too big. But there are also places nearby where you can swim for free.
In the morning, you'll see probably the most famous waterfalls on the island - 25 fountains and Risco. Then head to the Druidic forest of Fanal and wash away your tiredness in the lava pools right in Porto Moniz
Today will be marked by famous tourist attractions - you can find the Risco waterfall and 25 fountains in every tourist guide. And their easy accessibility is reflected in the number of people heading here. But if you head out early, you can enjoy these places for yourself. And once you're a little off the main route, you'll find beautiful places without people. 😎
The trails to the waterfalls lead again along beautiful levadas. You can either just go through both falls and come back, or go around the whole circuit. I highly recommend the longer option, it is beautiful and its length deters most tourists heading to this destination.

On the route you will meet the most famous place in Madeira - 25 fountains. The trail leads naturally down a left-hand path, at the end of which you will find a beautiful lake in the rock, into which 25 different springs flow. It's a very pretty sight, and if you're hardy enough, you can take a dip in it. 🏊♀️
The last stop today is the incredibly photogenic Fanal laurel forest. 🍃🍂
Especially if you have fog, which is more than usual in this place the forest has a truly magical atmosphere. It's as if you've suddenly found yourself in a druidic forest straight out of the Asterix comics. 🧙♂️
The entire Laurel Forest area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which just goes to show what a unique place it is. Some of the trees are up to 600 years old and their twisted and moss-covered branches offer a breathtaking spectacle. 🌳🌳

After moving to the east of the island, a new landscape opens up before you, the arid São Lourenco Peninsula with its cliffs. And along the way, you can stop in beautiful Santana.
The small town of Santana on the northeast coast of the island is famous for its traditional triangular houses Casas de colmo. Dozens of these have been preserved and have become one of the symbols of Madeira. 🏡
It's worth just walking around the town and soaking up the atmosphere, or stopping into one of the many cafes for a bite to eat. 😋
🔎 Interesting Fact: These original shepherd's huts did not have extra strong foundations and could easily be dismantled and moved to another location after the grass was grazed by cattle.
Your tourist destination for today is São Lourenço Peninsula. Its crossing is easy but still rewards you with beautiful views of the surrounding cliffs. 🪸
The landscape is again completely different compared to other parts of the island, Madeira never ceased to surprise me even after many days.
A short distance before the easternmost point of the island, there is a created oasis with a bar and restaurant where you can refresh yourself. 🌭
And it's definitely worth hiking up the hill above the restaurant.

Today's adventure will take you along the coastal path along the cliffs to the village of Porto da Cruz
The last hike of your trip takes you to a beautiful trail on the edge of the cliffs called Veredo Boca do Risco. 🪨
On the way, you'll get spectacular views of the rough sea below you, the beautifully blooming surroundings and the peninsula behind you that you explored yesterday. 🏝️
The road winds along the edge of the cliffs all the way through relatively easy terrain. Unfortunately it is not a loop, so you have to take the same route there and back. But at least you can turn around at any point along the way and adjust the length of the route as you go. ️
