Notes on when to visit: There is not a bad time to visit New Orleans, but here are a few time periods to highlight: 

Early February-Early March: A Mardi Gras visit to New Orleans is loud, colorful, and immersive. Parades roll for weeks leading up to Fat Tuesday, featuring elaborate floats, marching bands, and bead throws from famous krewes like Rex and Zulu. Streets fill with costumes, music, and spontaneous celebrations, especially in the French Quarter and Uptown. It’s exhilarating but crowded, with higher prices and limited availability—ideal for travelers who want spectacle, energy, and nonstop festivities. This will be a more expensive and crowded time to visit, but quite exciting!

Spring (March–May) is one of the best overall times to visit New Orleans. Temperatures are warm but comfortable, humidity is relatively low, and the city hosts popular festivals such as Jazz Fest and French Quarter Fest. Outdoor dining, walking tours, and riverfront strolls are especially enjoyable, and crowds are noticeably lighter than during Mardi Gras.

Fall (October–November) brings cooler weather and a more relaxed pace, making it another favorite season. Food and cultural festivals return, Halloween is widely celebrated, and live music fills the city without peak-season congestion. The atmosphere is lively yet manageable, offering an ideal balance of energy, comfort, and accessibility.

December in New Orleans is festive but far more relaxed. Holiday decorations line the French Quarter, and college football bowl games bring fans and energy to the city. A highlight is Celebration in the Oaks, where City Park transforms into a dazzling display of lights and seasonal attractions. With cooler weather, fewer crowds, and strong dining and music scenes, Christmas offers a charming, balanced way to experience the city.

Note: This itinerary makes recommendations for either walking or taking a ride-share to get to the next destination. New Orleans does have a streetcar system which is pretty cheap and easy (get the Le Pass app to guide you) to get around, but you have to be comfortable with public transportation and patient to get where you are going.
