Do you love nature and want to experience the most beautiful parts of Hawaii in Europe? This itinerary is made for passionate travelers who love views, the ocean, vegetation, hikes, excellent food, and want to fully enjoy their time in the Azores. Because who knows when you'll return, right?
The itinerary includes locations that are worth visiting, and for each, you'll find a detailed description and my personal tips. It only includes 2 activities that require payment (up to 25 euros per person), otherwise all locations are free.
You might be asking yourself, why should I choose this particular itinerary?
I created this itinerary based on my own travels to the Azores - you'll find my recommendations to ensure your entire vacation goes smoothly and ideally avoids the tourist crowds.
I've also added tips for locations that I didn't include in the itinerary, but I believe some of you might find them more appealing than the ones included. :)
You don't have to search or figure anything out - you'll find everything in this variable itinerary, which will become your reliable guide on the island of Sao Miguel.
I wish you a pleasant journey.
The first day is dedicated to arrival, accommodation, and for those who want - a walk around the city and swimming.
Upon arrival in the capital city of Ponta Delgada, pick up your car (according to the information you received before departure), which you will use to travel around all week. Be prepared to be surprised by the humid ocean air.
If you prefer peace and quiet, then accommodation in the town of Vila Franca do Campo, which is about 20 minutes by car from the capital, is perfect for you. It is an ideal starting point for trips on the island.
The town has all the amenities - a beautiful large grocery store, local cafes and restaurants, and a beautiful beach (with free parking and a buffet/restaurant/closed showers and toilets), where we went to swim all week. You could always swim there - as you will surely find out, the beaches on the island often have huge waves.
After you check in, I recommend a walk to the sea, along which there is a promenade with restaurants and local houses.

Excellent restaurant near the ocean. They cook 4 themed cuisines, everyone can choose.
A nice church with a magnificent view of the city. You can drive directly to the church and park. About 7 minutes by car from the center.
The only beach where we could swim every day without any problems. Beautiful entrance to the sea, large, black sand, large free parking and a bar with a restaurant.

Trip to a beautiful lake located high above the ocean. You will take a lovely walk along the lake and encounter almost no tourists along the way. This day can take you 4 hours, but also 7 hours. It just depends on you and how much time you want to spend there.
A high-altitude lake, which is an extinct volcano crater, resembles Jurassic Park. If you want to recharge your batteries and feel like no one else in the world exists, this place is ideal for you.
Basic information:
Description of the path to the lake:
TIP: After about 1.5 km of walking along the lake, you will come across beaten paths on the left that lead to two smaller lakes. If the lake impresses you, you can get to it from the other side on another day. It wasn't windy down by the lake - it's sheltered.
The whole trip can take 3 hours, but easily 6, depending on how much you hurry and what all you want to see. Personally, I would stay in this place much longer and not rush so much.

Excellent restaurant in the Greek spirit. Fabulous food and atmosphere. You can also swim there.
A former volcano that now serves as a tourist attraction. You can paddle to the volcano from the port of Vila Franca do Campo in about 30 minutes by kayak.
There are several options for renting a kayak - you can rent it for an hour and go around the island, or you can also pay for entry/access inside the crater to the pier. More expensive options are then by boat and for snorkeling. We rented a kayak for an hour and went around the island - it was very nice.

A beautiful day, but a very busy one. If it weren't sunny any day, I'd go here. You'll start at the gushing hot springs, from which you'll move on to an amazing hour-long trip to a waterfall in the middle of the jungle. Then all that awaits you is a beautiful view in a magnificent park by the coast and the famous lighthouse (note that you can only go inside for a tour on Wednesdays).
This point includes not only the lake with its springs, but also a paid attraction - a beautiful natural park.
Basic information:

A beautiful waterfall in the middle of the Azorean jungle. At the beginning of the path to the waterfall, there is a small village where you can park. I recommend driving to the end; there are plenty of parking spaces there.
The path to the waterfall is all uphill, and you walk through a beautiful jungle along the way. Although in some places, we also had to climb over rocks. :) If you're lucky, you'll also meet some local chickens.
The journey there and back is 4 km, approximately 1 hour each way.
Wear comfortable shoes, and expect it to be muddy. I recommend going in the morning or afternoon - we went during the day, and it was very crowded.
You can comfortably swim under the waterfall.
You can find the entire route here.

This is an ideal spot for a picnic/lunch in a beautiful park that also offers views of the surrounding cliffs and ocean. The viewpoint has convenient free parking for dozens of cars and minimal crowds. You can stroll through the small park, sit on a bench or in the gazebo, and soak in the local atmosphere.

A locally famous lighthouse built on the tip of a cliff.
Important information

TIP for an excellent homemade fish restaurant. Reservations are necessary (the day before or that morning).
A beautiful beach known for its natural springs. There is free parking, soft-serve ice cream, and a snack bar by the beach.

Today, a relaxing day awaits you, dedicated to a pleasant walk, views, and swimming.
A beautiful long beach famous for its huge waves and surfers. Don't count on swimming here. I visited it twice and only ever got my feet wet. However, I still included it in this program because it was beautiful, long and ideal for a walk (2-3 km). There is also a restaurant and modern toilets with showers on the beach.
The advantage is a huge free parking lot. The brave can go right next to the parking lot to discover abandoned rooms in the cliffs.

A nice city worth strolling through and having lunch in. You can walk there from the beach.
I've been searching for a TOP viewpoint that isn't overcrowded with tourists for a long time. Finally, I ended up at the Cintrao viewpoint, which is known for whale watching. It towers over the magnificent cliffs and offers views of the coast and ocean. Bring binoculars with you - maybe you'll see a whale or dolphin. :) There are many of them swimming around the island.
TIP: a narrow road (approx. 1 km) leads to the viewpoint, where you sometimes can't avoid an oncoming car (fortunately, there aren't many). There is also a tiny parking lot for 5 cars at the viewpoint.

The second of my mentioned paid attractions. If you don't like swimming with other people, I don't recommend this park.
However, if you like natural pools and swimming in medicinal springs, Caldeira Velha is the best option on the island (I visited more thermal baths on the island, but this one was the best).
The park is made very sensitively to the surrounding nature, you feel like you are walking in a modified jungle. You lie in a warm lake and look up at the beautiful mature trees and lianas. The park has clear rules and can only accommodate 100 people at a time. We never felt it was overcrowded.
Of course, there are changing rooms and toilets with a shower.
The gem is the lake located at the very top and includes a small waterfall.
Practical information
A large waterfall near Ribeira Grande. You can swim under it; it's very high, but the path to it is down a steep hill and past a sewage treatment plant. Parking is at the top, but some daredevils drove down the hill and left their cars at the bottom (there's enough space there as well).

A well-known tea plantation on the island. You can take paid tours and buy products.

You'll experience the island's most famous views today. And they will be worth it. :) Just prepare some good shoes.
Your day begins with a visit to Lake Canário - a small lake surrounded by trees. It is associated with the most famous viewpoint on the entire island.
Practical information
Description of the route
- Park in the car park
- From the car park, take the well-maintained wide path suitable for prams (there is no chance of getting lost, everything is clearly marked).
- After a few dozen meters, turn down to Lake Canário
- There you can enjoy the view from the small pier and go back the same way.
- Continue along the original path and after about 10 minutes of walking, the path narrows and you start to climb - you can already see beautiful views.
- Continue along the path, which clearly leads you to the famous viewpoint. If it is in the clouds, be patient and wait. The weather there changes from minute to minute.
Return journey
- If you want, you can return the same way you came. I recommend continuing along the road (it looks more like a path, but don't worry, it's an official road).
- A minimum of people walk along this clearly trodden path (it is advisable to have trainers/hiking boots and you definitely won't get through there with a pram.
- It offers you wonderful views, vegetation and peace.
- After about 15 minutes of walking, you will come out at the lower parking spaces. Head left up the asphalt road and in 3 minutes you will reach the main car park.

First, I would like to present 3 route options.
1. You can walk around the lakes completely (full-day route of approximately 18 km), starting at Lake Canário.
2. Walk along the right side from the parking lot at Lake Canário and return the same way (approximately 8 km).
3. Drive about 5 minutes to the abandoned hotel (tourist attraction), park there, and walk to the left side. The length is approximately 7 km. I took this option, and I will describe it in detail below.
You can extend options 2 and 3 by approximately 3 km by going down to the lakes.
Option 3
- As part of option 3, you arrive at the parking lot by the abandoned hotel, which has beautiful modern toilets and a view of the lakes. Most people stop here.
- If you want, you can visit the abandoned hotel.
- However, you will continue on (it is a clearly marked, relatively wide path).
- The path is beautifully maintained and comfortable. You will have breathtaking views of the ocean on the left and the lakes on the right.
- In places, you can comfortably sit in the grass and admire the beautiful volcanoes...
- You can turn around at any time; we reached the point where we saw the famous Mosteiros beach. Then, we returned the same way.
- The route took us approximately 3 hours.
- Once you get back to the hotel, you can have refreshments at the famous burger stand.

Abandoned hotel and parking lot
Nice (and probably the most famous) beach with a bar and toilets. Parking is limited on site, but you can park. The beach is only worth it if there are no waves. So if it's windy and not azure, I wouldn't even go there.

Today you will conquer the highest mountain on the island, from which you will have panoramic views of the vast Atlantic Ocean and see the island from all sides.
The Pico da Vara trail is 7 km long round trip. The estimated duration is approximately 4 hours.
There is a parking lot at the beginning of the trail - you go back and forth the same way. At the beginning, you mainly walk in the forest, and only the last section is across plains. I recommend bringing plenty of fluids, a hat, a jacket, and sturdy shoes or hiking boots.
Form
To be able to go to the mountain, you must fill out and have a confirmed online form (free). Just fill it out the day before. You will receive a confirmation by e-mail. This is purely a safety step so that local authorities know who is currently on the mountain.
TIP: Do not go to the mountain unless the weather is 100% nice.

The last day is dedicated to departure. If you are flying out in the evening or afternoon, you can spend the morning visiting your favorite beach or taking a walk around the city.
And here is the end of your vacation. I hope you enjoyed it very much and will remember it fondly, just like me. If you still have time, I recommend taking a walk through the capital or going for a swim at your favorite beach. Then just drive to the airport, return the rental car, and you fly.
A pineapple plantation can be an ideal activity in the capital before departure.
Airport TIP
The airport is tiny, and we got through security in just a few minutes. You can walk through the entire airport in a few minutes too. So, I recommend not rushing and taking your time. There are relatively few seats at the airport, and many people have to stand. But arrive on time!
