You don't need a car - Apulia has surprisingly good train connections. You can easily get to places like Polignano a Mare, Alberobello, or Lecce. Trains are frequent, affordable, and allow for comfortable day trips along the coast and inland.


The itinerary is designed to let you experience the authentic atmosphere of the region. You will enjoy wandering through narrow streets, small beaches between rocks, local markets, and family businesses where fresh mozzarella or burrata is made right before your eyes. Apulia is also a paradise for food lovers: simple but exceptionally tasty specialties, fresh seafood, homemade pasta, sweet Italian desserts, and of course, ubiquitous gelato await you. 1. Bari City Center (you have enough time after arrival)

  • Arrive at Bari Centrale train station and immediately take a walk around the city.
  • Walk through the historic center of Bari Vecchia. Narrow streets, local hustle and bustle, and an authentic atmosphere are ideal for your first introduction to southern Italy. Also worth seeing is the massive fortress Castello Normanno-Svevo, which has guarded the city since the Middle Ages. A pleasant end to the day can be a walk along the elegant Via Sparano da Bari.


2. Accommodation in Monopoli (arriving in the evening or tired)

  • The journey from Bari Centrale to Monopoli is very simple and is one of the most comfortable transfers in Apulia. Trains run frequently and the journey takes approximately 30 minutes (you can check train connections here).
  • At Bari Centrale station, follow the "Partenze" (Departures) signs. Look for a train towards Brindisi, Lecce, or directly to Monopoli. Once the platform number (Binario) appears, simply go down to the correct platform.
  • The easiest way to buy a ticket is directly at the station, where there are red Trenitalia vending machines. Paper tickets need to be validated in the validator. If you have a ticket in the Trenitalia app or bought online, you do not need to validate anything.

The white houses, fishing boats in the harbor, and the peaceful atmosphere of the old town create an ideal place for slow exploration. Head to the Centro Storico di Monopoli, which is one of the most beautiful in all of Apulia. A labyrinth of narrow streets awaits you, where every corner hides something new: small chapels, blooming balconies, or old stone portals. Take your time and deliberately get a little lost. That's usually how you stumble upon the most beautiful spots. The alleys will naturally lead you to the small fishing port of Porto Antico di Monopoli, where the daily life of local fishermen unfolds among the colorful boats. On the way, it's worth stopping at the baroque cathedral Basilica Cattedrale Maria Santissima della Madia, which stands in the very heart of the old town.


The midday heat in Apulia can be intense in the summer, especially between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. During this time, many shops and restaurants close. It's therefore a good idea to have lunch earlier, ideally around noon. Small local businesses in the old town or near the harbor are an excellent choice. In the evening, Monopoli comes alive again. Take a stroll along the old city walls towards the fortress Castello Carlo V, which offers beautiful views of the sea. The most beautiful part of the evening often comes around sunset, when the harbor and stone houses turn warm shades. Polignano A Mare

You will get off at Stazione di Polignano a Mare, from where it is about a 15-minute walk to the historical center. After getting off the train, head straight along Via Pompeo Sarnelli or the parallel Via San Francesco, which will take you directly to the heart of the old town. If you want to save steps, Polignano a Mare also has popular cycle taxis (often electric rickshaws) that take tourists around the historical center and to viewpoints, such as the one on Lama Monachile beach.

The old town of Centro Storico stands directly on high limestone cliffs above the sea. The narrow streets are full of white houses overgrown with vines, small squares, and viewpoints. The views of the turquoise sea are among the most beautiful in all of Apulia.

Cala Monaci

A good tip for swimming is the beaches of Cala Susca or Cala Monaci, surrounded by cliffs, also suitable for a longer stop. Both beaches are about half an hour's walk from the historical center, or you can take a short taxi or local bus ride.

Alberobello

It is possible to use a direct bus connection from Monopoli to Alberobello. The carrier is Ferrovie del Sud Est and the bus departs from Monopoli from Piazza Sant’Antonio. In Alberobello, it stops at Via Cavour, just a few minutes walk from the trulli district.

Rione Monti

Rione Monti is the most famous district of Alberobello. Hundreds of trulli line the steep streets, each little house with a different symbol on the top of the roof. Locals believe they protect against evil spirits.

Also, take a walk to the quieter part of Rione Aia Piccola, where people still live and the atmosphere is more authentic. Trullo Sovrano, the largest trullo in the city, which now functions as a small museum, is also worth a stop.

Polignano A Mare

You will get off at Stazione di Polignano a Mare, from where it is about a 15-minute walk to the historical center. After getting off the train, head straight along Via Pompeo Sarnelli or the parallel Via San Francesco, which will take you directly to the heart of the old town. 1. Bari City Center (you have enough time after arrival)

  • Arrive at Bari Centrale train station and immediately take a walk around the city.
  • Walk through the historic center of Bari Vecchia. Narrow streets, local hustle and bustle, and an authentic atmosphere are ideal for your first introduction to southern Italy. Also worth seeing is the massive fortress Castello Normanno-Svevo, which has guarded the city since the Middle Ages. A pleasant end to the day can be a walk along the elegant Via Sparano da Bari.


2. Accommodation in Monopoli (arriving in the evening or tired)

  • The journey from Bari Centrale to Monopoli is very simple and is one of the most comfortable transfers in Apulia. Trains run frequently and the journey takes approximately 30 minutes (you can check train connections here).
  • At Bari Centrale station, follow the "Partenze" (Departures) signs. Look for a train towards Brindisi, Lecce, or directly to Monopoli. Once the platform number (Binario) appears, simply go down to the correct platform.
  • The easiest way to buy a ticket is directly at the station, where there are red Trenitalia vending machines. Paper tickets need to be validated in the validator. If you have a ticket in the Trenitalia app or bought online, you do not need to validate anything.

On the way, it's worth stopping at the baroque cathedral Basilica Cattedrale Maria Santissima della Madia, which stands in the very heart of the old town.


The midday heat in Apulia can be intense in the summer, especially between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. During this time, many shops and restaurants close. It's therefore a good idea to have lunch earlier, ideally around noon. Small local businesses in the old town or near the harbor are an excellent choice. In the evening, Monopoli comes alive again. Take a stroll along the old city walls towards the fortress Castello Carlo V, which offers beautiful views of the sea. The most beautiful part of the evening often comes around sunset, when the harbor and stone houses turn warm shades. You will get off at Stazione di Polignano a Mare, from where it is about a 15-minute walk to the historical center. After getting off the train, head straight along Via Pompeo Sarnelli or the parallel Via San Francesco, which will take you directly to the heart of the old town. If you want to save steps, Polignano a Mare also has popular cycle taxis (often electric rickshaws) that take tourists around the historical center and to viewpoints, such as the one on Lama Monachile beach.

Cala Monaci

Polignano A Mare

You will get off at Stazione di Polignano a Mare, from where it is about a 15-minute walk to the historical center. After getting off the train, head straight along Via Pompeo Sarnelli or the parallel Via San Francesco, which will take you directly to the heart of the old town. If you want to save steps, Polignano a Mare also has popular cycle taxis (often electric rickshaws) that take tourists around the historical center and to viewpoints, such as the one on Lama Monachile beach.

The old town of Centro Storico stands directly on high limestone cliffs above the sea. The narrow streets are full of white houses overgrown with vines, small squares, and viewpoints. The views of the turquoise sea are among the most beautiful in all of Apulia.

Cala Monaci

A good tip for swimming is the beaches of Cala Susca or Cala Monaci, surrounded by cliffs, also suitable for a longer stop. Both beaches are about half an hour's walk from the historical center, or you can take a short taxi or local bus ride.


Bring water, a parasol or a hat. There are only minimal services on the smaller beaches, but that is what gives them their charm.

Head to the family dairy Delizie di Latte Caseificio. Here, traditional dairy products are made daily on-site from fresh cow's milk. You can taste fresh mozzarella, creamy stracciatella, burrata full of delicate cheese cream, or ricotta still warm from production.


It is best to buy a few things to take with you for a simple lunch or snack, such as with focaccia, tomatoes, and olive oil. There is also a fruit and vegetable shop right next door.

Alberobello

It is possible to use a direct bus connection from Monopoli to Alberobello. The carrier is Ferrovie del Sud Est and the bus departs from Monopoli from Piazza Sant’Antonio. In Alberobello, it stops at Via Cavour, just a few minutes walk from the trulli district.

Bus connections are not as frequent as the train to Polignano a Mare.

Rione Monti

Rione Monti is the most famous district of Alberobello. Hundreds of trulli line the steep streets, each little house with a different symbol on the top of the roof. Locals believe they protect against evil spirits.

Also, take a walk to the quieter part of Rione Aia Piccola, where people still live and the atmosphere is more authentic. Trullo Sovrano, the largest trullo in the city, which now functions as a small museum, is also worth a stop.

The historical center of Lecce is one of the most beautiful in southern Italy. The streets are full of decorated facades, small squares, and churches.
