Albania is not just a destination full of beautiful beaches, but a country that will surprise you with its diversity. In just a few days, you can combine relaxing by the sea with trips to the mountains, exploring historic towns, and tasting excellent local cuisine. Whether you are looking for romantic sunsets, turquoise coastlines, panoramic views, or an authentic Balkan atmosphere, Albania offers an ideal mix of exploration and relaxation. The base for the entire trip is the seaside city of Durrës, which serves as a great starting point for exploring the surrounding area. From there, you can head out on a new adventure every day, whether it's to the Bovilla mountain lake, vibrant Tirana, the coast, or Lake Ohrid. You can take one day just for yourself and enjoy relaxing on the beach. Every day also includes tips for restaurants and places worth visiting. You will taste fresh fish, seafood, traditional Albanian specialties, and great wine. There is something for everyone here—and you will take home not only beautiful photos, but above all, shared memories that turn an ordinary long weekend into a trip you won't forget.
The base for the entire trip will be the seaside city of Durrës, which is a great starting point for exploring the surrounding area. Today's schedule depends on your arrival time.
You can easily get to Albania with a flight to Tirana. Thanks to great flight connections from many European cities, you can swap the daily hustle and bustle for an evening by the sea, where your long weekend begins, in just one day.
Pick up your car right at the airport; it will give you maximum flexibility while exploring throughout your stay. Parking around Albania is simple. You can always park comfortably on the streets.
The journey to the coastal town of Durrës, which will be your base for the entire stay, takes about 30 minutes. The town offers a wide selection of restaurants and also serves as an ideal starting point for day trips throughout central Albania, as well as featuring an amazing beach. Thanks to this, you don't have to change accommodation every day and can travel light. Take a stroll along the promenade in the evening and soak up the atmosphere of Albania.

For dinner, I recommend the popular local fish restaurant, where you can pick a fresh fish on the spot and have it grilled to order. The grilled shrimp is also a great experience; they prepare them already peeled, so you can really enjoy them without any effort. It’s a simple yet very authentic local experience that perfectly rounds off your first evening by the sea. On the way back to your accommodation, you can grab a drink at one of the local beach bars.

A trip to Bovilla Lake is one of the most beautiful natural experiences near Tirana. Tirana is a vibrant and colorful capital city of Albania that surprises with its energy and the contrast between modern and historical architecture.
I recommend not driving your rental car all the way to the lake (it's forbidden - DO NOT DRIVE ALL THE WAY THERE); the last stretch of the road is very bad, unpaved, and unsuitable for regular cars. The ideal option is to drive to this point and switch to an ATV (which you can rent), which will take you safely to the viewpoint above the lake. This final section is often one of the biggest highlights of the whole trip; the combination of off-road ATV riding and views of the surrounding mountains makes Bovilla a true "hidden gem" of Albania.
Turquoise water nestled between dramatic mountains offers views that are among the most photogenic in all of Albania.

Enjoy the atmosphere of a city that is rapidly developing and constantly changing. It’s perfect to start at the main Skanderbeg Square, which forms the natural center of the city and a great starting point for a walk. There is also an underground parking lot nearby where you can park comfortably.

From here, you can head out on foot to several of the city's main landmarks. One of them is Bunk’Art 2, a museum located in a former nuclear bunker in the city center, which provides a very authentic look at the communist regime era and the modern history of Albania.
Just a few minutes' walk away is the Pyramid of Tirana, one of the city's most famous landmarks, which is currently being transformed into a modern cultural space. Nearby, you will also find the former residence of Enver Hoxha, which serves as a reminder of the country's recent history and its major transformation after the fall of the regime.

If you want to take a break from the city hustle, the Grand Park of Tirana is an ideal choice—it's a vast green park with a lake that offers a calmer atmosphere and is a favorite spot for locals to go for walks or just relax.
Tirana is perfect for a relaxed stroll without a fixed plan—a city where history, street art, cafes, and bustling daily life mix side by side. You can wrap up your day with dinner at Tirana Castle, a renovated historic area in the city center that now serves as a lively space full of restaurants, cafes, and small shops. It's a lovely spot to end a nice day.

A beach day awaits you in the Durrës Plazh area, where you can just relax, go for a swim, or enjoy a stroll along the promenade. The schedule is completely open, providing the perfect space for recharging and enjoying the laid-back vibe of a seaside town.
After a day full of trips, treat yourself to a slowdown and pure relaxation by the Adriatic Sea. There are also beach bars and restaurants available, so you can spend the whole day right by the sea without needing to rush anywhere.
For dinner, I recommend L’Amuse, hands down one of the best restaurants in Durrës. It offers a combination of Mediterranean and Asian cuisine with a focus on fresh fish, sushi, and steaks.
After dinner, if you're up for one more stop, you can grab a beer on your way back to your accommodation at the great Taproom Durrës, a popular spot with a selection of craft beers and a pleasant garden.

You can tailor this day to your own mood and preferences. Two distinct yet equally powerful full-day trip options await you. The first is a trip to Ohrid Lake, one of the Balkans' most beautiful lakes, offering a historic town, a peaceful atmosphere, and scenery among the most picturesque in the region. The second option is a journey to the south of Albania, where you'll find some of the most stunning beaches and viewpoints in areas like Dhermi, Sarandë, or Ksamil, along with turquoise seas, hidden coves, and a relaxed Mediterranean vibe. Whichever you choose, both directions offer a completely different perspective on Albania, from quiet mountain landscapes to a beach paradise just a stone's throw from Corfu.
The first stop is the Monastery of Saint Naum, founded at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries by one of the disciples of Cyril and Methodius. This place has strong spiritual significance and remains one of the most important Orthodox monasteries in the region to this day. Besides its history, it is also notable for its location right at the springs, where the clear water of the Crni Drim river flows into the lake. You can even take a small boat trip to the springs.
Ohrid Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Balkans and is known for its crystal-clear water, mountain scenery, and the historic town of Ohrid, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It combines nature, history, and a laid-back Balkan lifestyle in one place. Take a trip around the entire lake. Don't forget that you are crossing borders, so have your travel document and green card ready.

Next, you can head over to the Bay of Bones, an archaeological museum on the water whose name reflects the many skeletal remains and archaeological traces of prehistoric settlements that once stood right above the lake. The reconstruction of the wooden platforms and dwellings shows how people in this area once lived in close connection with the water.

The end of the day belongs to the city of Ohrid, a historical gem on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Stroll through the narrow streets of the old town, which has kept its authentic character, then continue along the harbor, walk the wooden boardwalk above the lake surface (you can even take a swim here), and head to one of the most iconic spots, the Church of St. John at Kaneo, dramatically perched on a cliff above the lake, offering one of the most beautiful views of the entire Ohrid Lake. The spot is perfect for a peaceful end to the day.

If you'd like, on the way back, just a few minutes before arriving in Durrës, you can treat yourself to a romantic dinner with a glass of wine at Abaia Winery, which offers a pleasant setting, local wines, and the perfect atmosphere to wrap up a day full of experiences.

After a few days full of experiences, it's time to say goodbye to Albania. Since Tirana airport is about 30 minutes from Durrës, you don't have to leave too early and can still fully enjoy your last morning by the sea. If your flight time allows, treat yourself to one last swim or take a stroll along the beach. It's a nice way to wrap up a long weekend. Simply drop off your car at the airport and head home. Perhaps you'll already be thinking about which part of Albania to discover next during your journey.
Don't forget to be at the airport at least 2-3 hours before your flight. Return the (refueled) car and head to your gate. Have a pleasant journey home.
Albania is a destination that will surprise you with its diversity and contrasts. In just a few days, you can combine the sea, mountains, cities, and excellent gastronomy without having to compromise between relaxation and exploration.
It's a trip that has its own pace—sometimes perfectly calm by the sea, other times lively and chaotic in the streets of Tirana or on roads off the beaten path. It is precisely this mix of organization and Balkan "roughness" that gives the whole journey its character.
And that is exactly where the magic of Albania lies: it’s not perfectly polished, but it is authentic, direct, and full of moments that you remember precisely because they aren't perfect.
