D.C. is the perfect place for kids of any ages to explore. There's big open spaces to run around safetly, kid-friendly museums that if they get tired, they're free! Lots of food options and snack opportunities. I bet they learn something too. This itinerary has lots of breathing room and modular components to tailor this trip to your family's interests.

After a day of travel, orient yourself and give everyone some time to run around! If you have time you could visit any number of the Smithsonian Museums: they're FREE! These are all walkable from the hotel: American History, Natural History, American Indian, National Gallery (a free art museum, not a Smithsonian, but we love to play games there: what does this painting sound like, what would you call it, does it have a dance move, what shapes do you see, what are they saying to eachother). The west gallery has a great gift shop. Also Asian Art (has a great cafe) and African Art.
What's so great about D.C. is that you can go as in depth or surface as you like...run around the Library of Congress and do the scavenger hunt or take a guided tour to learn about this history of it all. Start on Capitol Hill. After lunch, head to the museums. If you've still got energy, hit a few memorials before or after dinner.
Start your day with breakfast and head to the zoo! Swing into Georgetown for the shopping, architecture and snacks. End the day exploring memorials and seeing the iconic sights.
