Cabo Girão Skywalk

Our only sightseeing stop on the first day was the highest cliff in Madeira - Cabo Girão. It rises at 589 meters above sea level and is one of the highest cliffs in Europe. At the top of the cliff there is a glass viewpoint. When you climb it, there is a half-kilometre hole below you. Admission is free all year round.

Espada - a fish called lacehead darkfish with banana. You can see what this fish looks like later in the itinerary.

Espetada - don't be alarmed at what instruments of torture this will bring to your table. Soon they'll be hanging a sumptuous beef on a skewer for you.

PR6 25 Fontes hike & Levada do Risco

On the third day we were waiting for the first PR6 - das 25 Fontes. In the course of the levadas you are supposed to meet 25 waterfalls. When they were naming the levadas, they counted all the meter lines they encountered. Realistically, you will meet about 5 of them, which can really be considered waterfalls 😀 However, this should not discourage you from going on the levada. You will meet grazing cows at the beginning, beautiful panoramas along the way and at the end of the levada you can take a dip in the pool below the last waterfall. On the way back (and actually on the way there) you can have a snack at the Rabacal Nature Spot Café with again some of those panoramas.


The journey is 4.6 km there and 4.6 km back. It took us about 4 hours 🏆

Here comes the first of our two ethereal villas - judge for yourself. A villa with a capacity of 12 people, perfect for our group. And it just worked out so well that Filda, a member of our pack, celebrated his birthday. So the party, there was nowhere to go! Grilling, drinking and celebrating birthdays and experiences 🥳

In the Santana district you will find typical Madeiran shepherd's houses. Most of them are in the town of the same name Santana. Interestingly, these houses are portable. When the cattle graze the surrounding grasses, the shepherd moves with the cattle and the house to another place 💪🏻 Milda has of course fooled around a bit 😂

The next night we were waiting for us in the town of Santana, about 100 m from the square with houses. The hotel has a talking parrot that says "Hola!", a beautiful piano at the front desk, an indoor salty pool, and a place to meet and drink beer in the evening. What more could you ask for? 🤔

PR9 Levada of the Green Cauldron

We went to PR9 as a second fun. Our longest levada, leading below the highest peak Pico Ruivo, which we will climb in a few days. The first part is on contour with almost zero elevation gain. At the end of the first part you will have a refreshing dip in an approximately 6 degree pool. The second part starts with a beautiful climb up some steps and continues with some douh tunnels. At the end you will find... nothing much 😀 No view, no swimming. So enjoy what you see along the way, because it's definitely worth it! 


In total, the levada is 17.4 km long and we walked it for 7 hours.


Why 7 hours? 🤔 Secret tip - at the end of the stairs, halfway up, there is a tunnel that says "Do not enter under any circumstances!". Well, of course we entered it and went in. And we did. And walked. We walked for 30 minutes, and after 30 minutes, when we weren't done, we decided to turn around instead. Then we read that it's a ton of over 3 kilometers long, penetrates Pico Ruivo from one side to the other, and was built for hydroelectric power. Whoever manages to reach the end, please send a photo! 😍

Museu da Baleia da Madeira

On the eighth day we started at the verlyb museum. We learned about the important role verlyb hunting played in Madeira's history. The museum is divided into two parts, chronologically. The first part is dedicated specifically to whaling and the second part is dedicated to the current situation - how we protect the whales. Some members of the pack couldn't handle the videos of fishermen cutting off pieces of the whale's body with machetes. I understand, but it's still our history that should be known. Anyway, you need to be prepared for a rougher experience 😶

The second part of the day we had the second best panorama in Madeira - the PR8 levada - Ponta de São Lourenço. Rock cliffs rising out of the sea and a 3km long road, at the end of which you can enjoy a pancake in the sea. Beautiful. As a young man would say, "11.5/10" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐


At the end you can have a snack at a local restaurant 🍴🍺


The round trip is 6 km long and took us about 4 hours.

Physical difficulty: Hard

The best things to see in Madeira. PR1 leads from Pico Areerio to the highest peak, Pico Ruivo. It is 6.1 km there and 6.1 km back. It took us 7 hours - we were in no hurry to get anywhere. Along the way, you're treated to incredible panoramas. I recommend starting early and being at the top before sunrise. There will be some people waiting for sunrise on Pico Areerio, but you won't see many of them on the road this early.


We were worried about the weather, which was forecast to be less than ideal. But in the end it worked out as you can see in the photos. Recommendation - never follow the forecast! 😂

Cabo Girão Skywalk

Our only sightseeing stop on the first day was the highest cliff in Madeira - Cabo Girão. It rises at 589 meters above sea level and is one of the highest cliffs in Europe. At the top of the cliff there is a glass viewpoint. When you climb it, there is a half-kilometre hole below you. Admission is free all year round.

PR6 25 Fontes hike & Levada do Risco

On the third day we were waiting for the first PR6 - das 25 Fontes. In the course of the levadas you are supposed to meet 25 waterfalls. When they were naming the levadas, they counted all the meter lines they encountered. Realistically, you will meet about 5 of them, which can really be considered waterfalls 😀 However, this should not discourage you from going on the levada. You will meet grazing cows at the beginning, beautiful panoramas along the way and at the end of the levada you can take a dip in the pool below the last waterfall. On the way back (and actually on the way there) you can have a snack at the Rabacal Nature Spot Café with again some of those panoramas.


The journey is 4.6 km there and 4.6 km back. It took us about 4 hours 🏆

In the Santana district you will find typical Madeiran shepherd's houses. Most of them are in the town of the same name Santana. Interestingly, these houses are portable. When the cattle graze the surrounding grasses, the shepherd moves with the cattle and the house to another place 💪🏻 Milda has of course fooled around a bit 😂

PR9 Levada of the Green Cauldron

We went to PR9 as a second fun. Our longest levada, leading below the highest peak Pico Ruivo, which we will climb in a few days. The first part is on contour with almost zero elevation gain. At the end of the first part you will have a refreshing dip in an approximately 6 degree pool. The second part starts with a beautiful climb up some steps and continues with some douh tunnels. At the end you will find... nothing much 😀 No view, no swimming. So enjoy what you see along the way, because it's definitely worth it! 


In total, the levada is 17.4 km long and we walked it for 7 hours.


Why 7 hours? 🤔 Secret tip - at the end of the stairs, halfway up, there is a tunnel that says "Do not enter under any circumstances!". Well, of course we entered it and went in. And we did. And walked. We walked for 30 minutes, and after 30 minutes, when we weren't done, we decided to turn around instead. Then we read that it's a ton of over 3 kilometers long, penetrates Pico Ruivo from one side to the other, and was built for hydroelectric power. Whoever manages to reach the end, please send a photo! 😍

On the eighth day we started at the verlyb museum. We learned about the important role verlyb hunting played in Madeira's history. The museum is divided into two parts, chronologically. The first part is dedicated specifically to whaling and the second part is dedicated to the current situation - how we protect the whales. Some members of the pack couldn't handle the videos of fishermen cutting off pieces of the whale's body with machetes. I understand, but it's still our history that should be known. Anyway, you need to be prepared for a rougher experience 😶

The second part of the day we had the second best panorama in Madeira - the PR8 levada - Ponta de São Lourenço. Rock cliffs rising out of the sea and a 3km long road, at the end of which you can enjoy a pancake in the sea. Beautiful. As a young man would say, "11.5/10" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The best things to see in Madeira. PR1 leads from Pico Areerio to the highest peak, Pico Ruivo. It is 6.1 km there and 6.1 km back. It took us 7 hours - we were in no hurry to get anywhere. Along the way, you're treated to incredible panoramas. I recommend starting early and being at the top before sunrise. There will be some people waiting for sunrise on Pico Areerio, but you won't see many of them on the road this early.


We were worried about the weather, which was forecast to be less than ideal. But in the end it worked out as you can see in the photos. Recommendation - never follow the forecast! 😂

Cabo Girão Skywalk

Our only sightseeing stop on the first day was the highest cliff in Madeira - Cabo Girão. It rises at 589 meters above sea level and is one of the highest cliffs in Europe. At the top of the cliff there is a glass viewpoint. When you climb it, there is a half-kilometre hole below you. Admission is free all year round.

PR6 25 Fontes hike & Levada do Risco

On the third day we were waiting for the first PR6 - das 25 Fontes. In the course of the levadas you are supposed to meet 25 waterfalls. When they were naming the levadas, they counted all the meter lines they encountered. Realistically, you will meet about 5 of them, which can really be considered waterfalls 😀 However, this should not discourage you from going on the levada. You will meet grazing cows at the beginning, beautiful panoramas along the way and at the end of the levada you can take a dip in the pool below the last waterfall. On the way back (and actually on the way there) you can have a snack at the Rabacal Nature Spot Café with again some of those panoramas.


The journey is 4.6 km there and 4.6 km back. It took us about 4 hours 🏆

In the Santana district you will find typical Madeiran shepherd's houses. Most of them are in the town of the same name Santana. Interestingly, these houses are portable. When the cattle graze the surrounding grasses, the shepherd moves with the cattle and the house to another place 💪🏻 Milda has of course fooled around a bit 😂

The next night we were waiting for us in the town of Santana, about 100 m from the square with houses. The hotel has a talking parrot that says "Hola!", a beautiful piano at the front desk, an indoor salty pool, and a place to meet and drink beer in the evening. What more could you ask for? 🤔

PR9 Levada of the Green Cauldron

We went to PR9 as a second fun. Our longest levada, leading below the highest peak Pico Ruivo, which we will climb in a few days. The first part is on contour with almost zero elevation gain. At the end of the first part you will have a refreshing dip in an approximately 6 degree pool. The second part starts with a beautiful climb up some steps and continues with some douh tunnels. At the end you will find... nothing much 😀 No view, no swimming. So enjoy what you see along the way, because it's definitely worth it! 


In total, the levada is 17.4 km long and we walked it for 7 hours.


Why 7 hours? 🤔 Secret tip - at the end of the stairs, halfway up, there is a tunnel that says "Do not enter under any circumstances!". Well, of course we entered it and went in. And we did. And walked. We walked for 30 minutes, and after 30 minutes, when we weren't done, we decided to turn around instead. Then we read that it's a ton of over 3 kilometers long, penetrates Pico Ruivo from one side to the other, and was built for hydroelectric power. Whoever manages to reach the end, please send a photo! 😍

On the eighth day we started at the verlyb museum. We learned about the important role verlyb hunting played in Madeira's history. The museum is divided into two parts, chronologically. The first part is dedicated specifically to whaling and the second part is dedicated to the current situation - how we protect the whales. Some members of the pack couldn't handle the videos of fishermen cutting off pieces of the whale's body with machetes. I understand, but it's still our history that should be known. Anyway, you need to be prepared for a rougher experience 😶

The second part of the day we had the second best panorama in Madeira - the PR8 levada - Ponta de São Lourenço. Rock cliffs rising out of the sea and a 3km long road, at the end of which you can enjoy a pancake in the sea. Beautiful. As a young man would say, "11.5/10" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Physical difficulty: Hard

The best things to see in Madeira. PR1 leads from Pico Areerio to the highest peak, Pico Ruivo. It is 6.1 km there and 6.1 km back. It took us 7 hours - we were in no hurry to get anywhere. Along the way, you're treated to incredible panoramas. I recommend starting early and being at the top before sunrise. There will be some people waiting for sunrise on Pico Areerio, but you won't see many of them on the road this early.


We were worried about the weather, which was forecast to be less than ideal. But in the end it worked out as you can see in the photos. Recommendation - never follow the forecast! 😂

Cabo Girão Skywalk

Our only sightseeing stop on the first day was the highest cliff in Madeira - Cabo Girão. It rises at 589 meters above sea level and is one of the highest cliffs in Europe. At the top of the cliff there is a glass viewpoint. When you climb it, there is a half-kilometre hole below you. Admission is free all year round.

Espada - a fish called lacehead darkfish with banana. You can see what this fish looks like later in the itinerary.

Espetada - don't be alarmed at what instruments of torture this will bring to your table. Soon they'll be hanging a sumptuous beef on a skewer for you.

PR6 25 Fontes hike & Levada do Risco

On the third day we were waiting for the first PR6 - das 25 Fontes. In the course of the levadas you are supposed to meet 25 waterfalls. When they were naming the levadas, they counted all the meter lines they encountered. Realistically, you will meet about 5 of them, which can really be considered waterfalls 😀 However, this should not discourage you from going on the levada. You will meet grazing cows at the beginning, beautiful panoramas along the way and at the end of the levada you can take a dip in the pool below the last waterfall. On the way back (and actually on the way there) you can have a snack at the Rabacal Nature Spot Café with again some of those panoramas.


The journey is 4.6 km there and 4.6 km back. It took us about 4 hours 🏆

Here comes the first of our two ethereal villas - judge for yourself. A villa with a capacity of 12 people, perfect for our group. And it just worked out so well that Filda, a member of our pack, celebrated his birthday. So the party, there was nowhere to go! Grilling, drinking and celebrating birthdays and experiences 🥳

The ruins of an old sugar mill that was built during the early settlement of Madeira. This is really all that's left of them, don't expect anything more. What's more interesting - there is a natural, freshwater pool by the ruins where you can take a free swim 🩱

Santana Municipality

In the Santana district you will find typical Madeiran shepherd's houses. Most of them are in the town of the same name Santana. Interestingly, these houses are portable. When the cattle graze the surrounding grasses, the shepherd moves with the cattle and the house to another place 💪🏻 Milda has of course fooled around a bit 😂

The next night we were waiting for us in the town of Santana, about 100 m from the square with houses. The hotel has a talking parrot that says "Hola!", a beautiful piano at the front desk, an indoor salty pool, and a place to meet and drink beer in the evening. What more could you ask for? 🤔

PR9 Levada of the Green Cauldron

We went to PR9 as a second fun. Our longest levada, leading below the highest peak Pico Ruivo, which we will climb in a few days. The first part is on contour with almost zero elevation gain. At the end of the first part you will have a refreshing dip in an approximately 6 degree pool. The second part starts with a beautiful climb up some steps and continues with some douh tunnels. At the end you will find... nothing much 😀 No view, no swimming. So enjoy what you see along the way, because it's definitely worth it! 


In total, the levada is 17.4 km long and we walked it for 7 hours.


Why 7 hours? 🤔 Secret tip - at the end of the stairs, halfway up, there is a tunnel that says "Do not enter under any circumstances!". Well, of course we entered it and went in. And we did. And walked. We walked for 30 minutes, and after 30 minutes, when we weren't done, we decided to turn around instead. Then we read that it's a ton of over 3 kilometers long, penetrates Pico Ruivo from one side to the other, and was built for hydroelectric power. Whoever manages to reach the end, please send a photo! 😍

Museu da Baleia da Madeira

On the eighth day we started at the verlyb museum. We learned about the important role verlyb hunting played in Madeira's history. The museum is divided into two parts, chronologically. The first part is dedicated specifically to whaling and the second part is dedicated to the current situation - how we protect the whales. Some members of the pack couldn't handle the videos of fishermen cutting off pieces of the whale's body with machetes. I understand, but it's still our history that should be known. Anyway, you need to be prepared for a rougher experience 😶

The second part of the day we had the second best panorama in Madeira - the PR8 levada - Ponta de São Lourenço. Rock cliffs rising out of the sea and a 3km long road, at the end of which you can enjoy a pancake in the sea. Beautiful. As a young man would say, "11.5/10" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐


At the end you can have a snack at a local restaurant 🍴🍺


The round trip is 6 km long and took us about 4 hours.

PR1 Vereda do Areeiro
Physical difficulty: Hard

The best things to see in Madeira. PR1 leads from Pico Areerio to the highest peak, Pico Ruivo. It is 6.1 km there and 6.1 km back. It took us 7 hours - we were in no hurry to get anywhere. Along the way, you're treated to incredible panoramas. I recommend starting early and being at the top before sunrise. There will be some people waiting for sunrise on Pico Areerio, but you won't see many of them on the road this early.


We were worried about the weather, which was forecast to be less than ideal. But in the end it worked out as you can see in the photos. Recommendation - never follow the forecast! 😂
