On arrival, pick up your car at the airport and set off to one of the most unique places not only in Italy, but in the whole world. Along the way, you'll discover the art of baking in the town of Altamura, before crossing into the province of Basilicata to the prehistoric town of Matera. It's worth spending a night here, because in the evening it takes on a completely different atmosphere.
The morning is ideal to enjoy the city a bit more and then drive to Monopoli, which is about an hour away. Depending on the route you choose, you can stop for lunch in the town of Putignano, where there is an amazing restaurant called Scinua. They exclusively use local ingredients and traditional recipes in a modern and very original way. Monopoli will then be your home for the next 4 days.
After a busy two days, it's time to relax and enjoy the seaside. In the morning, it's the perfect time to head to the town beach - in the afternoon, there may be seaweed. There are other beaches further to the south-east, and it's wise to wear water shoes at the smaller ones because of the rather sharp rocks. However, the water there is crystal clear.
The next hours can be spent wandering around the historic centre. Don't hesitate to get lost in the alleyways, there is always a charming nook or cute place to have a coffee or a drink. There are countless restaurants in Monopoli, and of course they specialise in fish and seafood, but for a light lunch there's an even better option - go to one of the "caseficio" or cheese shops, where you'll find the freshest mozzarella, fragrant hams, pickled vegetables and much more... Have you tasted the cheese called "burrata"? Just buy a few small red tomatoes or a salad, add this cream cheese filled ball to your plate, and you won't need anything else.... well, maybe a drop of local olive oil.
There are small local agencies in the centre which also offer boat or bike trips to the surrounding charming olive groves.
Then in the evening, just stroll around town like all the locals and visitors do, enjoy the view of the old harbour, and don't forget to have a gelato!
