Flight from Prague to Denmark ✈️. We will check in at Copenhagen airport and sleep well 🛌. In the next few days we will have a great adventure 🤩.
After 4.5 hours of flight we land at Kangerlussuaq🇬🇱, where we change planes. The time difference with Copenhagen is minus 4 hours⏰.
Kangerlussuaq means "big fjord" in Greenlandic. It is a major air transport hub and the largest commercial airport in Greenland. The airport dates from the time of American settlement during World War II. The military station was also known as Bluie West-8 and was later renamed Sondrestorm Air Base. Before boarding the plane to the small town of Ilulissat, we will have the opportunity to take a picture of the famous "postpostcard" 🪧 at the airport, which shows that the nearest destination is the North Pole 😎.
We take a short one-hour flight north to the town of Ilulissat , which will be our base for the next six nights.
Ilulissat means "glacier" in Greenlandic 🧊 and lies 300km north of the Arctic Circle at the mouth of a picturesque, 40km-long fjord filled with massive chunks of glacial bush 🧊. These are released from the northern hemisphere's most productive glacier, Sermeq Kujalleq. The Ilulissat Glacier Fjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site🤩. Upon arrival, we check in and walk through the town full of colorful houses 🌈🏠 and visit the wooden church of Zion ⛪. We'll do some grocery shopping and sample some local beer🍺😊.
Today we are dedicating today to a truly special experience. We will sail 🛥️ between the huge ice floes🧊🧊 of the fascinating Ilulissat Glacial Fjord to see its indescribable beauty from the water's surface. With a bit of luck, we'll catch a glimpse of the red sailing ships ⛵️. It's cold at sea even in the summer months ☃️, so dress warmly 🧤and pack something liquid to warm you up 🥃🔥. We'll also bring thermoses for tea. Captains navigate the boats carefully, no waves to worry about. The only challenge is the cold 🥶. After the cruise, we will warm up at our accommodation 🏚️ and possibly still go out for dinner 🍽️ or a walk around town. Everything is "at our fingertips"😎.
On the fourth day we will have an easy 1.5 km hike on comfortable wooden paths in the national park to the Inuit settlement Sermermiut in Disko Bay. We get a spectacular view of the impressive glacial fjord Kangia. This narrow strait carries 10% of all ice flow from inland. It was the ice floes 🧊 from this fjord that probably sank the Titanic 😮🚢.
Occasionally we can see whales right from the hill in the bay 🐋. There are several hiking trails here and we will definitely be back 😉.
The breed of dog known as the Greenland dog🇬🇱🐶 or Greenland husky is an important part of the culture of the Inuit, the local indigenous people. It is one of the purest breeds of dog. They are encountered in many places, especially with puppies in the summer. They are incredibly photogenic and cute 😍. However, we have to respect them: don't feed them, don't touch them and uncool them. Greenlanders are strict with their dogs, but they would give their lives for them. Greenland dogs have a long history of living and working alongside the Inuit. They were used for various purposes including pulling sleds 🛷for transport and hunting and to help with daily chores in the Arctic environment. The breed's adaptation to extreme conditions ❄️ proves its durability and suitability for the harsh Arctic climate. We will take lots of photos and videos 📷.
We are going on another boat trip, this time to whale safari🐋. Our skipper will do everything he can to find them. It's going to be a bit of an adrenaline rush, but it's worth it! Along the way we will take pictures of the shrubs reflecting on the water and maybe spot the famous red sailfish ⛵️ or seals 🦭🦭. After the trip we will warm up at the accommodation . Keen adventurers 😜 can take an evening expedition to Sermermiut for a late sunset ☀️. Maps 🗺️ of the town and national park with routes will be given to each participant at the beginning of our trip.
Today we will visit a Greenlandic household and learn about the beautiful national costume of Kalaallisuut. It consists of glass beads, short pants made of sealskin 🦭and tall white shoes 👢(called kamiks) decorated with a floral motif 🌸. Surprisingly, these come from Moravia, from the time of the missionaries known as the Moravian Brothers who worked in Greenland in the late 18th century. Greenlandic costume is the only women's costume in the world that favors pants 🩳 over skirts 😎. Today, Inuit wear their costume only on important events and holidays🎉. According to Greenlandic tradition, coffee and cake will be served 🍰☕️ - a tradition called Kaffemik. Don't worry, we'll work off the calories on the trek again 🤪🥾.
The girls can try on the costume too, unfortunately my butt didn't fit in the seal shorts🙈😂.
We have one last day ahead of us🥹: free programm. We can go on a trek again 🥾 and visit the dogs 🐾 🐕, or walk around town and shop for souvenirs. Those interested can visit the local museum or the Ilulissat Icefjord Center.
There will also be a choice of facultative excursions such as kayaking 🚣🏻 between krami, sightseeing flight ✈️🚁 , a full-day boat trip to Eqi Glacier or a visit to the Inuit settlement of Oqaatsut.
If you have a drone, be sure to take it with you, but only at your own risk. Sometimes they take on a life of their own out there. 🤷♀️🤦♀️ I recommend flying only from land, not from a boat 😅. Rest in peace our beloved Mavic.
Those interested can take an optional boat trip to the picturesque Inuit settlement of Oqaatsut, located 15 km north of Ilulissat. The settlement was once a popular trading post and was called Rodebay (Red Bay) by Dutch whalers in the 18th century 🐳🐋. The more adventurous can enjoy local specialties such as frozen seal blubber 🤤or whale meat🐋 at the H8 restaurant. This excursion is not included, but I highly recommend it.

A few hours transfer awaits us in Kangerlussuaq. We can walk around the area or buy souvenirs. I found a treasure in a local supermarket: a red wine 🍷 with a stylish label with a muskrat motif. We take one last drink🥃 to say goodbye to Greenland 🇬🇱 and enjoy the stunning views of the endless ice sheet from the plane.
After arriving in Copenhagen, we will briefly recuperate at the airport before our early morning flight to Prague. ✈️

The breed's adaptation to extreme conditions ❄️ proves its durability and suitability for the harsh Arctic climate. We will take lots of photos and videos 📷.
We are going on another boat trip, this time to whale safari🐋. Our skipper will do everything he can to find them. It's going to be a bit of an adrenaline rush, but it's worth it! Along the way we will take pictures of the shrubs reflecting on the water and maybe spot the famous red sailfish ⛵️ or seals 🦭🦭. After the trip we will warm up at the accommodation . Keen adventurers 😜 can take an evening expedition to Sermermiut for a late sunset ☀️. Maps 🗺️ of the town and national park with routes will be given to each participant at the beginning of our trip.
Today we will visit a Greenlandic household and learn about the beautiful national costume of Kalaallisuut. It consists of glass beads, short pants made of sealskin 🦭and tall white shoes 👢(called kamiks) decorated with a floral motif 🌸. Surprisingly, these come from Moravia, from the time of the missionaries known as the Moravian Brothers who worked in Greenland in the late 18th century. Greenlandic costume is the only women's costume in the world that favors pants 🩳 over skirts 😎. Today, Inuit wear their costume only on important events and holidays🎉. According to Greenlandic tradition, coffee and cake will be served 🍰☕️ - a tradition called Kaffemik. Don't worry, we'll work off the calories on the trek again 🤪🥾.
The girls can try on the costume too, unfortunately my butt didn't fit in the seal shorts🙈😂.
We have one last day ahead of us🥹: free programm. We can go on a trek again 🥾 and visit the dogs 🐾 🐕, or walk around town and shop for souvenirs. Those interested can visit the local museum or the Ilulissat Icefjord Center.
There will also be a choice of facultative excursions such as kayaking 🚣🏻 between krami, sightseeing flight ✈️🚁 , a full-day boat trip to Eqi Glacier or a visit to the Inuit settlement of Oqaatsut.
If you have a drone, be sure to take it with you, but only at your own risk. Sometimes they take on a life of their own out there. 🤷♀️🤦♀️ I recommend flying only from land, not from a boat 😅. Rest in peace our beloved Mavic.
Those interested can take an optional boat trip to the picturesque Inuit settlement of Oqaatsut, located 15 km north of Ilulissat. The settlement was once a popular trading post and was called Rodebay (Red Bay) by Dutch whalers in the 18th century 🐳🐋. The more adventurous can enjoy local specialties such as frozen seal blubber 🤤or whale meat🐋 at the H8 restaurant. This excursion is not included, but I highly recommend it.
Today we are flying from Ilulissat to Copenhagen ✈️ with a connection in Kangerlusuaq.
A few hours transfer awaits us in Kangerlussuaq. We can walk around the area or buy souvenirs. I found a treasure in a local supermarket: a red wine 🍷 with a stylish label with a muskrat motif. We take one last drink🥃 to say goodbye to Greenland 🇬🇱 and enjoy the stunning views of the endless ice sheet from the plane.
After arriving in Copenhagen, we will briefly recuperate at the airport before our early morning flight to Prague. ✈️
